Black. White.

Does anybody watch this show? It's a show, I guess you could call it Trading Races on FX. Myspace link> http://myspace.com/blackwhite

Anyway, it's very interesting. A white family and a black family move in together and put on a crap load of makeup and switch races to live in eachother's shoes. Well, it brings up alot of things like cultural ignorance, racism or course, etc. The white woman, Carmen, for instance though "Bitch" was an "affectionate term" for another woman in ebonics. One of the things as far as racism goes is white perception and black perception. The white guy, Bruno, was dressed as a black man and went out with Brian(the black man) because Bruno said he hasn't experienced racism yet dressed as a black man.

While they're walking down the street, they pass an older white woman who kinda crouches down. Brian interprets that as fear, but Bruno sees it as moving over to get out of there way. When they go into a store, an employee comes over to assist them. Brian interprets it as him sizing them up, Bruno sees it as good service.

So, any viewers, opinions, etc?

That's really interesting... it brings the question, is it really them sizing black people up or is it just down to interpretation? Obviously there will be cases where it's the racism thing, but I mean alot of shops I go into I have an employee come upto me and ask if they can help.

When you think about it, Brian goes home thinking "I went to the store today and some employee came to assist me because I'm black"... Bruno goes home and thinks "I went to the store today and they had great service". Who's going to be happier in the long run? It might be ignorance, but as they say, ignorance is bliss... no one got hurt, so I don't see the damage in looking for a positive spin on an event like that.

Personally, I think Brian was looking for racism. That said, Bruno is pretty naive to think that racism doesn't exist, 'cause I know tons of racist people. I only watched one episode of the show though.

  But yea, they are ignorant as hell, but I'm guessing that they live in a 99% white suburban community.

@ Axel-Well Brian was looking for racism to prove his point, it's just that it's hard for a person who's never experienced it to pick it out. Like Brian said, he's been black for 41 years, he knows what racism is like. Same for me, when you grow up different you have a hell of a time. Alot of times you look back to when you were a kid at some gesture that confused you, but then realize exactly what it meant. But I hope that Bruno is openly discriminated against so he will actually wake up. Also, Brian(dressed as a white man) was looking to buy a pair of shoes and the employee(white) actually put his foot in the shoe using a shoe horn too to make sure it fit comfortably. He said he's bought golf shoes before, but nothing like that's ever happened.

@ Jing-Yea it's worth watching. Definately more interesting compared to trading spouses or whatever.

On a side note, Nick (the black kid), is the worst actor I've seen. He doesn't look real authentic imo, and even worse he keeps talking like a black kid, with a black kid's voice. He's not trying to learn from it, he's just trying to "pass" as he said. Rose, the white girl, looks very authentic as a black girl, but she just doesn't play the part well enough. It's one thing to be an educated black person, and another thing to be her. She wrote this poem that had enough $10 words to support a country in Africa.

Same here. I've never been to a place that isn't serve yourself.

But like I said, both of them were wrong... more of a mixture of both opinions.

the white dude Bruno to me is still did not come close to understanding Brian's point... Bruno felt like if he conducted himself in a decent manner, no one would give him crap. but the problem is, he doesn't know what it feels like to he hated regardless of how you act. it got pretty annoying, but i guess there's more episodes to come, so I guess we'll see if he gets over it. and he used the n-word waaay too many times.... that was disturbing.

This looks pretty interesting... too bad I haven't even heard of 'FX'. At first I thought it said FOX, but I was wrong. It's an American only station, is it not?

Trading Spouces was from an English show that started years ago. That show was born from Wife Swap, also an English show.
