Drew Carey Show Thread (aka All Hail Cleveland's Finest)

Postby Andrew on Fri Feb 03, 2006 11:38 pm

I know I'm over a year late in posting this, but tonight I finally got to see the finale episode of The Drew Carey Show. NBN stopped screening it here in Australia on free-to-air around about 2002 in favour of reality shows and other poor excuses for "entertainment". Needless to say I was really happy to discover it was shown on Arena when I first got Foxtel in late 2004. Last year they began showing the new episodes from the point NBN stopped showing them so I've been able to watch the rest of the series run.

I've always felt that this show was underrated and underappreciated, written off as another run-of-the-mill sitcom. Aside from the entertaining stories and the great humour, the show was also innovative with the "Whose Line?" inspired live episodes, "Guess what's wrong with this episode" and of course their "very special episode" poking fun at how the show never got any Emmy considerations.

That said, the show did falter a bit in places. The loss of Christa Miller (Kate) hurt, as good as Cynthia Watros was in her role as Kellie. It's hard to replace a main character on a long running sitcom without a dip in quality (though M*A*S*H is an exception to the rule). By that point there had also been several twists and turns that hurt the characters a bit: Drew's failed marriages and polygamy, his stint in the mental hospital, losing his job several times and the changes to Winfred Louder. You need to stay fresh but some things should remain untouched, some areas you don't need to explore.

The finale was a fitting end to the show though, with Drew finally winning but only just. Perhaps the show should have ended with Kate's departure but they still made the best out of the situation. It was a nice idea for the last scene in the finale to mimic the last scene in the very first episode, a nice callback.

I could go on and on with my favourite quotes and memories of the show, but I might just see if anyone else cared about the show first before I do.

I watched the Drew Carey show for the brief few weeks I had a decent cable. I felt it was your typical run of the mill sitcom, but it made me laugh so I have no complaints about it.

I don't watch it regularly especially now that I'm in school with no tv (well there are but it's not in my room but in a recreation room and there's no cable) but I try to catch it when i'm home. of course i have no idea what you're talking about since what we're getting is probably a few seasons late.

It's a very nice show. I love Wayne more than anybody else on that show. He's the best . Especially on the 'song' part. (Y)

I've watched the show, but I guess they don't show it here anymore. "Whose line..." is absolutely hilarious, I watch that every week.

I prefer the US adaption of "Whose Line?", perhaps because I actually saw it before the British version but Drew is a much better host than Clive Anderson.

Agreed. I've seen a few episodes of the British version and it was just boring. The American version is way better.

The Drew Carey show is good. I only watch re-runs on TBS, I don't even know what it's timeslot was or what station it aired on in primetime.

Aside from the fact Drew is a far better host than Clive in terms of his one-liners and whatnot, he also let the games run longer while Clive seemed to adhere to certain rules that restricted the performers; he was very dry. Also, the games went much quicker on the British version. The US version had fewer games per episode (though the same tapings provided games for more than one episode) but they ran longer and were more entertaining as a result.

In the States it was on ABC originally, it had a few different timeslots as its popularity went up and down.

No doubt, on both shows. My favourite Lewis line came during the "very special episode": "I am a toilet of sadness. Oh well. At least I'm not a dying whore." Anytime he did John Wayne on Whose Line was hilarious as well.

i never liked the show. Carey looked like a sped, and that fat chick looked like a circus elephant with makeup on.
