TIME Persons of the Year

Postby GloveGuy on Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:20 am

Bono, Bill and Melina Gates

Congrats to them. In the Gates' case, $750 million...that's incredible. With Bono, it's amazing how much his voice has been able to influence the international community. Plus, he can still throw a sick rock concert.

Sure beats 2004's winner -- George W. Bush.

If it was anybody who should contribute $750 million to charity, it had to be Bill Gates. It's not as significant as his $49 billion net worth, but I'm glad he's contributing lots, and I'm hoping other billionares would do the same.

Many people believe that Time's Persons of the Year lost all credibility when they didn't name Bin Laden the Person of the Year in '01.

I wouldn't have given it to Bono, they should be trying to deflate his ego not build it up. He'll start emitting greenhouse gasses if he gets any more awards or recognition.

See, I'm going to answer that with what I say to anyone who tries to dismiss Bono for being egotistical, and it's not directed totally towards you, Jae -- The guy's trying to end poverty. What are you doing?

You might get sick of him being in the limelight, you might hate Vertigo, and you might wanna rip those shades off whenever he wears them, but you cannot say that he doesn't deserve the recognition. What he's doing is what ever other major celebrity should be doing -- using their influence to gain our support in solving the dilemma's of the world.

I know your response was more comical than serious, but this is more of a warning for those who even try to criticize Bono for wanting to be in front of the camera all the time. They really have no justification for it.

Riot, did you make that up yourself?

I'm not the only one who thinks that, no. In fact, I believe there was a lot of people upset that he didn't win it.

Bill Gates is only giving roughly .15% of his net value. I think almost anyone can beat that percentage.

It doesn't matter, he is still giving a shit load of money to charity. He doesn't have to give anything. People expect too much out of some people. Be grateful that he donated at all.

Her name is part of the foundation, so I guess she's entitled to some credit.

Nope, Time's Person of the Year means the person who had the most impact in that year. Osama Bin Laden clearly had the biggest impact in 2001 but they basically chickened out.

She does a TON of charity work. While the money might be coming out of her husband's checkbook, she does a lot of the work.

That's pretty interesting. I never knew that. Perhaps had his name not been on the list of candidates, there wouldn't have been such talk about it. But maybe the fact that he lost to someone is what brought all this out.

yep that guy who hosts that show Politically Incorrect was pushing for Bin Laden to win the award. i think at the time his show was on NBC or ABC. but when he aired that opinion, he was dropped from the network immediately. HBO the picked up his show...

And my whole take on it is it probably wouldn't have been the smartest thing for Time Magazine to do but at the same time, the whole purpose is to have the person with the most influence on that year. I think that was quiet obviously Bin Laden, so either give it to him or don't even put him on the list.

it makes sence, in theory, but the truth is that many people see it as an award. and no one wants that piece of shit to win an award... :x

Well I guess Osama probably should have got it... he did kind of change many aspects of our day to day lives. Remember the days before 9/11, the world was a different place.

On a similar note it might be news to you the Stalin got Time person of the year twice (1939 in a negative light, 1942 in a positive perspective) and Hitler got it once (1938 - which was a positive representation of the rebuilder of Germany). Between these 2 men they managed to cost the lives of 100's of millions of people, many of those killed as innocent prisoners in concentration camps on the basis of political views, religion, sexual orientation or merely being at the wrong place at the wrong time or knowing the wrong person.

That has nothing to do with the fact that he's at least trying to put an effort to help people in Africa. I don't like the guy either, but he's at least not sitting on his ass all day with his millions of dollars.
