Near death

Postby cyanide on Fri Nov 04, 2005 8:32 am

I had a freaky moment today.

I was reading a magazine in a bus terminal, and there was an old woman next to me, just sitting and waiting as well. Then I noticed that she was yawning in my direction, but then that yawn seemed too long to be normal, so I took a glance and then saw that she was like frozen and having a seizure at the same time. Her arms and legs were twisted and she was convusling. I was thinking, oh shit, gotta call 911, but there was an Emergency Button on one of the walls, so I let them know about the situation. I turn back, and the woman was still having that seizure and she was about to fall off her seat, so I ran and set her upright. She kept shaking and drooling, then suddenly the shaking started to die off. I thought she died in my hands, but somebody pointed that her legs are still moving, and yeah, she was breathing very softly. I don't know what the hell she was going through, but when the paramedics came in, they said she had a cardiac arrest. Shortly after, an ambulance came in and that's that. That was quite the freaky spectacle.

Has anyone else had to witness seeing somebody go through some sort of cardiac arrest, near death or even death?

Damn man, freaky deaky moment man.

I had called 911 about 8 times in my life and that was all in one year because of my mom and how sick she was :?. To me it seemed like it was bad but she pulled through all 8 times.

I've seen my fair share of epileptic seizures, but never any real life-threatening emergencies (unless you count maniacal episodes on psychotic people). :?

You did great by holding her man, good for you! (Y)
Do you know if she is OK right now?

Jona, do you know what exactly she went through? It looked like she was frozen, but she was having a seizure at the same time. Can that still be classified as stroke? At the end, she was breathing slowly and she was very limp, but she managed to whisper some words to the paramedics. She'll be okay, I noticed that she has a bandaid on her wrist; it could be a medical reaction, or she was currently going through some testings or something. She's really old, so I don't think she'll be around too long.

That's pretty crazy.. good thing she didnt die. Thankfully I havent experienced anything like that.. knowing me I'd probably panic and do something stupid lol. Where was the emergency button?
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.

It was on the wall between the snack/pop machines and the pay phones. Never noticed it before, somebody pointed it out to me as I was about to call 911 instead. I felt helpless, I had no freaking clue what to do while she was having a seizure right in front of me. I even asked the onlookers if anybody knew CPR when she went limp, and I thought I don't even know if CPR would do anything.

Her reaction to a sudden cardiac failure is pretty normal, since she is in a very delicate age group. At her age, the reaction is far from what 30 year old man's would have been.

I may not be right, but to my knowledge, a stroke in English is a neuropathy, having nothing to do with the cardiovascular part of the body. And, as the paramedics said, it most probably was a cardiac arrest. (Y)

Thanks guys.. but I don't consider myself a hero. If anybody but me was sitting next to her at that time, they would've done the same thing; I just happened to be there at the moment in time. Even in panic, anybody could rush to call 911... at least that's what I hope would happen.

It doesn't matter about what people would have done. Heros are people who do the right thing when nobody is looking and the pressure is on. You stepped up to the plate and delivered. Good work.

I had a friend who died because there was no one to help him when he had his seizure so she's very lucky to have someone to help her out, although the medics are the ones that really saved her but at least you arent taking the credit. (Y)

You handled the situation really well, I would have probably gone into shock and said 'Holy fucking shit' about 10 times repeatedly. I guess someone upstairs might be sending some cash your way.

How funny. I just got a letter today awarding me a $1500 scholarship that I didn't expect to win. And that's not the $1000 scholarship that I was guaranteed to get.
