I just saw this on SportsCenter.
At a CFL game, a football fan won 1 million in Canadian dollars after kicking a 50 yard field goal. He played soccer, so that supposedly helped him.
Lucky bastard...
Brian Diesbourg has a million-dollar leg.
After missing field goal tries from 20, 30 and 40 yards, the 25-year-old mechanical engineer from Belle River connected from 50 yards at halftime of the Toronto-Hamilton CFL game Thursday night to win $1 million Canadian ($853,351 U.S.).
“It’s unbelievable,” said Diesbourg, a longtime soccer player who had never kicked a football before a practice session for the event. “When it left my foot I was hoping it went left because I just missed the first three to the right. On the last kick, I purposely kicked it to the left hoping it would even itself out and it did.”
Diesbourg was selected from nearly 200,000 online entries in a contest sponsored by Wendy’s. He attempted four kicks for a variety of prizes, including $1 million for a successful 50-yard try.
After missing wide right from 20, 30 and 40 yards, Diesbourg hit the ball true on the 50-yarder and it had just enough distance to get over the crossbar for the big money. He was mobbed by members of the Argos as they returned to the field.
He had a a 30-minute practice session Wednesday with Argos kicker Noel Prefontaine.
“For him to miss the first three and to come back and hit the last one is unbelievable.” Prefontaine said. “I think he’s going to get a trial (with a CFL team).
“Having had the opportunity to work with him he did show he had the leg strength. I think his soccer background really helped him. I thought he had a legitimate shot.”
Diesbourg will be paid $25,000 a year for 40 years.

$25 000 a year for 40 years is a nice financial security for those who tend to overspend...
Wanna hear lucky? This was on the news today, and that was
lucky pretty fucked up:
17 gas plant co-workers win the $54.3 million dollar lotto
Imagine that. You're working an ordinary job, and suddenly you win over 3 million dollars.
Sat Oct 29, 2005 9:23 am
They'd probably waste 2million just driving home from work that day, due to the oil prices..
But its always great hearing ordinary people hitting it big
Sat Oct 29, 2005 10:08 am
Yea I wish I could hit it big, but dont we all... *sigh*
Sat Oct 29, 2005 11:36 am
I hate it how old people win huge amounts of money on the lottery. They should ban anyone over 50 from playing.
Sat Oct 29, 2005 11:55 am
you know what i hate? i hate hearing on tv how celebrities give their partners 4 million dollar rings and 10 million dollar toilet paper, and when it comes to donating for a good cause (ex. hurricane relief) they give like 50,000 $ (which is like .0000001 % of their wealth)

Arena. It used to be the CFL, but noone from there goes to the NFL anymore. This is just from a NFL pipeline perspective though.

I saw the highlights for this right after it happened.. pretty cool how he's even thinking of trying out for some CFL teams as a kicker.. I didn't think he'd make the last one but whatya know.. 50 yds is fuckin tough..

To tell you the truth , I think the hardest FG is when your at the 1 yard line . That big thing is right next to you! but 50 yards is fucking tough.

its almost impossible to kick a fg in the cfl from the 1-metre(yard) line, because unlike the nfl and afl, the uprights are on the goal line, not at the back of the endzone, so you pretty much have to kick it straight up.
The reason that the CFL doesnt really compete with the NFl is because of the marketing. The CFL hardly does any, and relies on its very low ticket prices to fund their teams, which have the lowest player salaries of any professional leagues. The average salary is probably about $55,000 a year, and many players have a second job. The highest paid players earn at most $250,000-$300,000, but most ticket prices are $20 at the most for really good seats.
The CFL rules (including longer field, 3 downs, no fair catch, single point for touchback) make for a more entertaining game, and would drastically improve the very few defficiancies in the NFL game. The running game actually becomes important, weak offenses cant be bailed out with long passes, and the extra player causes more creative strategies both in the passing game and defensive coverage.
Personally I've never heard of any arena league players leaving for the NFL and actually having success, but former CFLers Warren Moon (HOFer), Doug Flutie, Marc Boerichter and Mike Vanderjact have all gone from the CFl to the NFL and had lots of success. And pretty much every year there are 4-5 CFL allstars that spend the presesason and early regular season with NFL teams, and most return to the CFL later in the year.
And back on point, I seriously doubt that this guy will end up with a pro career, in any league, unless of course the XFL is resurrected.

WOW. this is a fucking joke for real. one fluke kick and there's a likelihood of him going to the CFL?
Mon Oct 31, 2005 10:06 am
I wouldn't call it a fluke kick..
He did know what he was doing with that kick.
Mon Oct 31, 2005 10:59 am
yeah wouldnt actually be suprised if he got into the CFL
sebastian janikowski played soccer after he came over (from poland?), and he only got into football after one of his shots in soccer knocked the goal back a couple feet... plus he has insane kicking power... XD
this guy might have a chance at backup, but he'd better learn to hit ALL of em.
Mon Oct 31, 2005 1:44 pm
it is a fluke kick, the dude has never kicked a football before. the mechanics of kicking a soccer ball and football is totally different.
Mon Oct 31, 2005 2:36 pm

i don't know know how high the bar is in football, but in soccer it's about 2.2m, and i've seen 2 occassions where a dude managed to kick the ball over the bar from about 30cm-50cm.....until then i thought it was impossible.
Back to this guy, he won't really get the $1mill, he'll get taxed about half of it.
