Full Tutorial: Sigs

Postby The GOAT on Fri Jul 01, 2005 6:07 am

Okay, I figure if I'm gonna do a tutorial I might as well get a draft sig done as well. I'll lpst in in the other topic too, but here's my finished product.
Image

Step 1: create a new image, any size as long as its within 450 px by 100 px (if it's for use on this site). I'll do 380 by 100. Then fill it with black.
Image

Step 2: take some brushes (http://www.deviantart.com) and do some brushing in white above the black layer.
Image

Step 3: Now we add color. There are a few ways to do this. you can:
 • add a layer of solid color above all the rest of your layers, then set it to overlay. Make sure it stays on top of everything except your border (last step).
 • Edit > Hue & Saturation on your background. This is quick, but it will have to be done each time you want something to be colored.
 • Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance. This will allow for multicoloring. Make sure this stays on top of everything except your border.

I'll use the last one. Just screw around with the sliders until you get what you want (in my case, Pacers colors).
Image

Step 4: Find the image you want to use. I used Google Image Search. Right click, copy image. Then go back to Photoshop, click File > New, OK, then paste the picture in.
Image

Step 5: Using the Magnetic Lasso tool, select your player. Then press ctrl+shift+I, then delete.
Image

Step 6: Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy. Then go back to your sig and Edit > Paste. Move it to where you want it, and in my sig I kept it under the Color Balance. I also duplicated the layer, moved it down and set it to Hard Light, but that's optional.
Image

Step 7: Text time. I used Acknowledge at 14 pt, and put it in the lower right corner with a 1 px white stroke. Change the font, size, and position around to your liking.
Image

Step 8: I'm adding a logo blended into the background. First find the logo (http://logoshak.com/) then import it into Photoshop using the same method used with the pic of Granger.
Image

Step 9: Highlight all the white using the magic wand tool and delete it. then press ctrl+T to resize it, because the logo should be at 50%, making it huge. Make it really small, shown here (you won't be able to see that I deleted the white because it's a .bmp).

Step 10: Edit > Select All, back to the sig, Edit > Paste. Then you can Free Transform again if needed to get it at your desired size.
Image

Step 11: to blend it in, just set the Layer Mode to Overlay.
Image

Step 12: Finally the border. The Color Balance should be the top layer. Create a layer above that. Edit > Select All, Edit > Stroke, 1 px, inside. Set it to whatver color you think looks best (I used white).
Image

And your sig is done. You can host it at http://imageshack.us/index.php

Good basis for making a sig, but honestly that final product looks ugly. :\ Personally I wouldn't put Danny under the color balance layer, and I'd add a Levels/Brightness-Contrast layer above the background to add some depth. Still nice procedure of making a sig, gj goat.
