ONE Campaign

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, watch the commerical first.

I was watching Diane Sawyer's interview with Brad Pitt last night on Primetime and to my surprise, the majority of the one hour consisted of him talking about the AIDS epidemic in Africa and a little documentary of him visiting Ethiopia recently.

What I learned from the special:

It only costs sixteen dollars to send a child to school in Africa -- that's tuition, uniform, and books. To us, sixteen dollars is not a whole lot of money; it's pretty much the equivalent of a CD. But to the children's families(or lack thereof since the orphanage rate is ridiculously high), sixteen dollars just isn't possible, leaving millions of children out of school.

In 10 years, we can cut poverty in half; in 20 years, we can wipe it out. We can be that generation that eliminates poverty. How awesome would that be? If we can all help, it won't take a lot from an individual standpoint.

These children deserve a second chance. We can't just let them die off because they were born with AIDS or in severe poverty. Compared to them, we won the lottery in life. It's time that we stop making excuses and actually get around to it. Each and every one of us can make a difference.

As a start, just add your name to theOne Declaration. But there's so much more you can do to make a difference in these kids' lives. You don't have to open your wallet, must at least try and open your heart.

Raising money to battle aids is a good initiative, but I'm really sick of those wrist bands.

I don't have a wrist band but I saw the ad to this thing, it's a good one. Although my sister ruined it a wee bit for me, it was getting all emotional and stuff and then at the end Tom Hanks was like, we're not asking for your money, we're asking you for your voice.

As soon as the ad was done she goes like, instead of making the damn ad you folks should've sent your money to Africa. I know it's wrong, but I had to smile.

Btw, I signed it.

Word, we have people in our school with like 5 wristbands each. Alot of them say "I'm worth the wait" trying to encourage abstinance, but half the people that have them prolly have as many STD's as bands.

My youth group (at church) sponsored a couple kids in Africa. I don't know how they're doing now, but probably better than before.

It may be cynical but I somewhat agree with that. A lot of that kind of thing has been done before and still nothing happened. The commercial, ads, and support is good and all, AT THE BEGINNING, but after a few months or years it will wane down and eventually be ignored or forgotten. I'm even suspicious if the donations will actually go those who are in need of it and not just in the hands of money grubbing individuals or corporations.

I still hope I'm wrong on what I've said.

Sadly when money is donated to these things they never go directly to the people. So yes it might cost $16 to put someone in school, but that doesn't mean they're going to end up with that $16.
