Leaked Playstation3 Specs, and Possible Pics

The specs that accompany these shots are saying the Sony PS3 will have wireless controllers, a 160GB hard disk, 1 CELL processor running at 4GHz (pumping out 256 GFLOPS worth of power — getting close to 1.21 gigawatts, here, folks), ethernet port, USB 2.0, memory stick duo support, and will read Blu-ray disks only. Backward compatibility for the older systems won’t be via the drive mechanism, then, but will be achieved via emulation in the CELL processor itself, providing retro compatibility with both PS1 and PS2. Controllers will be very similar to the PS2 controllers, plus add wireless. All of the above will be seen in the first line, to be released in Japan in March 2006, with a second version to follow in late 2006 that will be sporting a 400GB hard drive. The rev2 will also apparently be able to record TV shows on Blu-ray disks

Hm, looks pretty sweet i guess

I don't get it. What do you need a 400gb hardrive to in a console?

XBOX 360>All

Although, I heard you might have to buy another hard-drive thingy to play old XBOX games. That would be a rip but I'd spend the money nevertheless.

And Oh, the new controller looks less good then the previous PS2 controller (which was perfect).
They just made the controller bigger because they need to spam with a big "PS3" text?

With all that power it's bound to be incredibly highly priced, at least I think so. That's why I'm looking more at the Xbox360. But if you have to buy another harddrive to play old Xbox games on the 360, that is a complete rip. I might have a tough choice to make if the extra harddrive thing is true, but I still need to get something. Oh, the dissappointment of Gamecube...

EDIT;

PlayStation 3 announced for 2006

Sony confirms the name and release window of its next-generation console in Los Angeles, will use Blu-Ray disc format.

LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called. It also confirmed that the console will arrive in 2006 and will use Blu-Ray discs as its media.

The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3).

Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-X-Y buttons. The same message was also borne on static-adhesive stickers, which were stuck to the screens of the televisions of many hotel rooms...hopefully by the maids.

GameSpot will update this story with more details from and complete video coverage of the Sony Computer Entertainment press conference soon.

I think I've those pics before. They better not change the current dual shock design. that was perfect.

square-circle-X-Y buttons

This has got to be fake. Dual Shocks never had a Y button

Sweet design, but I agree the controller looks unnecessarily bulkier than the original ones. I won't buy it though, since PC > all :P

Edit: The photos Null showed shows a different version of the PS3 controller, and it looks damn sweet (and looks comfortable)

saw this on ign.com...the controller's even weirder...hopefully the controller doesn't feel as bad as it looks or at least have the older dual shocks to be usable on the new system

Besides only partly knowing what all that means, looks like any PS3-anticipators are going to really get some use from their wallets. Part of that is problably bs though just to make it sound better.

Null's stats look a little more accurate... I was going to say is there a 4ghz processor available today period? 3.2 seems more realistic.

Intel is sitting on close to 10, they're just releasing them slowly to keep ahead of AMD. Plus the fast ones are insanely expensive, like only the military can afford them. At least that's what I guy I know said. He had some sort of tour at Intel.

I think they're planning to have downloadable game updates or something. Other than that I have no idea. Custom soundtracks I guess. Although, it might be needed since 80 GB hardrives don't seem to be enough on most computers nowadays
