Is Star Wars teaching morals?

Postby Fresh8 on Wed May 11, 2005 7:14 pm

I've been thinking lately... has George Lucas been trying to teach us morals through Star Wars?

Anakin falls to the Dark Side due to greed, hungar for power and not being able to let go... Is George trying to teach us a lesson here?

And has he done it all along?

The best movie was Ep. 5, "Empire strikes back", where the lines between good and evil were blurry, just as in real life. (Y)

any lessons learned from Star Wars are superficial.....you want some lessons, analyse the Lord Of the Rings trilogy.

What would you look like after you fall into a volcano.. You wouldn't come out looking the same.

And then there is the case of it being a movie.

I haven't seen any Star Wars movies to date, I'll wait till the third episode is on DVD and then let my sister's boyfriend buy it and then watch episode 1 till 6. I want to see what all the hype's about. I tried watching from part 4 was it? I fell asleep, maybe part 1 till 6 will make more sense.

I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the Star Wars movies do use the old standard of Good vs Evil. The idea that otherwise good people become seduced by the prospect of power, falling victim to their greed is also another common angle. My guess is that it's merely meant to be a good story with some thought provoking elements rather than a true cautionary tale.

That said, I've heard they're studying it in high schools here in Australia (in New South Wales at least) these days as one of the texts, along with Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner", Jane Austen's "Emma", "Clueless", Shakespeare, Huxley's "Brave New World" and the poetry of John Donne. That would suggest there are enough themes and ideas in Star Wars to be manipulated and deconstructed as part of the ridiculous new HSC English syllabus.
