Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Postby Ataraxia on Sun Apr 03, 2005 7:50 pm

This is just sad, specially as a Newcastle fan....I couldnt get to see the game...since they showed stupid Man Utd takin on Blackburn while the Magpies were takin on Villa and I forgot to watch the taped telecast that was shown like 2 hours ago  ....I cant believe it...without Dyer and Bowyer its gonna be that bit harded to beat the Red Devils in the FA Cup Semi's....Bowyer is always a trouble maker...a good player but his attitude is a bit screwed at times...at least he said hes sorry and so did Kieron....tsk tsk....Cmon Newcastle get your act together and dont screw up like this again. :x

Graeme Souness has insisted Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer will play again for Newcastle despite being sent off for fighting on Saturday.

The pair were dismissed by referee Barry Knight after they squared up and traded blows as Newcastle slipped to a sorry 3-0 defeat.

Souness admits he has never witnessed such a scene during his time in the game, but says he will urge the club's paymasters to give them a second chance.

"It's a first for me," he said at a press conference. "I have never witnessed that before.

"Hard words between players occur in every game, but it is unusual for it to lead to what it did today.

"We were going along nicely and this is going to make it harder, but it won't make us take our eye off the ball.

"We have slipped up in terms of points in The Premiership and what is also important is the three lads being sent off (Steven Taylor saw red for handball).

"We will miss them but we have to remain focused at an important time of the season."

Souness feels Bowyer cannot be defended for his part in the scuffle, but plans to lodge an appeal against Dyer's red card as the former Ipswich man has assured the Scot he did not throw any punches.

"I have been assured by Kieron Dyer that he did not throw any punches today and was on the receiving end, so that is the road we will be going down.

"I think Lee Bowyer is indefensible, the pictures show him throwing more than one punch and he has to accept what punishment comes his way.

"But we feel Kieron has an argument here. I have seen the incident once on television and have been assured by Kieron that he did not throw any punches and that is the route we will be taking."

Souness has reassured the pair that they will play again for the club.

"I can envisage both of them playing for Newcastle again," he added. "Players like them do not come along every day and they are class players.

"I will have to speak to the chairman but that is my view. I hope he feels that if it ever happened again it would be the end for them.

"Hopefully the chairman and the board see it that way."

Souness feels the pair will put the incident behind them.

"It is fine, there is not a problem between them or between any of them," he added. "That was something new for me at Newcastle, I have never seen that at training."

Souness was less than impressed with the efforts of referee Barry Knight.

"I am in no way condoning their actions, but I feel the referee had a disappointing day.

"Alan Shearer's header, which hit Samuel's hand, that was a penalty and that makes it 1-1; a very different game.

"Also their second penalty, the incident was outside the box and I don't feel there was enough contact even for it to be a foul.

"And after that frustrations have got the better of them and it has shown in them wanting to go boxing.

"I have told him (Knight) exactly what I have told you."

A well-taken goal from Juan Pablo Angel and two penalties from Gareth Barry clinched the three points - but the result will pale into insignificance compared to the shocking scenes which tarnished the end of the game.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were shown red cards for fighting amongst themselves - as Newcastle lost all self-control as their unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt.

Villa boss David O'Leary has been boosted by the news that he will have money to spend in the summer and it may have acted as a spur to his side, as they took an early lead on eight minutes - but the goal owed much to the shoddy defending of Newcastle.

Steven Davis' cross can best be described as hopeful, but it caused panic in the Newcastle box and Angel lashed his shot past Shay Given after Jermaine Jenas made a real horlicks of his attempted clearance.

Newcastle have found their stride in the last six weeks and they responded to the setback by creating a string of chances.

Jenas attempted to atone by clipping a lofted ball to Alan Shearer, but the Magpies talisman failed to test Thomas Sorensen with his header.

Sorensen did earn a percentage of his fee on 12 minutes when he produced a fine low shot from Bowyer who had combined well with the Laurent Robert.

Newcastle poured forward in waves, with Dyer seeing a low shot well saved and Jenas wasting two fine openings.

Dyer had been asked to play in a support-striker role and he took to the task with relish and he came close to levelling the scores on 20 minutes, but his acrobatic volley flew just wide.

Bowyer was active at both ends of the pitch, as only his alert tracking back prevented Barry from doubling Villa's advantage after a quicksilver break from the Midlanders.

Barry has one of the finest left foots in The Premiership, but he came within a whisker of netting with his 'swinger' as his low shot from the edge of box hit a post before bouncing to safety, while at the other end the wasteful Jenas was at it again seconds before the break as he slashed his shot wide after being teed-up by Dyer.

Newcastle came out in positive fashion after the break and the vast majority of St James' Park were pleading for a penalty moments after the restart, but Barry Knight failed to see what appeared to be a clear handball from Jlloyd Samuel which prevented Shearer's header from finding its target - an unmarked Bowyer.

Angel had a chance to put the game beyond Newcastle on 50 minutes but, after eluding Jean-Alain Boumsong with ease, he dragged his shot disappointingly wide of goal.

A combination of Sorensen and the crossbar prevented Bowyer from finding a leveller and Newcastle paid for their failure to find the target as a shocking blunder from Nicky Butt allowed Darius Vassell to stride in on goal and he rounded Given before seeing his shot blocked by the hand of substitute Steven Taylor.

Knight had no hesitation in dismissing Taylor and Barry stepped up to rifle the spot kick beyond the Irish keeper to bring Newcastle's unbeaten run to a halt.

Referee Knight was not done and he awarded Villa a second penalty after Stephen Carr and Vassell tangled on the edge of the box, with the result being the same - Barry lashing his effort into the top corner.

Villa took a welcome three points back to the Midlands, but Newcastle ended the game with eight men after Dyer and Bowyer started fighting in the Villa half.

The pair squared up and traded blows, which left Knight with no option other than to send the pair from the field.

Newcastle had looked so good before the international break, but their season is in serious danger of imploding - especially as two of their better players on the day were sent off for fighting with each other.

   that's hilarious. I hate both of them, Dyer's talented but a wanker and Bowyer's just a wanker. Apparentely Dyer threw no punches but obviously Bowyer got them in.
