For general burning nothing beats Nero.

Thats a reasonable comment, I agree with you as it can sometimes be abit awkward. However a little bit of patience goes along way, you wont find a more versatile program than Nero.
 What types of files are you likely to be burning?

Easy CD Creator could fit your style, but its getting crappier and crappier. you cant even burn a vcd without a dvd burner now. Nero is very good if you dont find it complicated. its really easy to use if you find ALL the plugins and install them. (Y)

burn the divx movie as a data disc, and buy the phillips divx compatible dvd player to play it. $69.99 at compUSA.

or you can encode the divx movie into a VCD mpeg then split it in halves to fit in two cds. tools required: VirtualDub and TMPGEnc. time required: several hours.

you decide.
