Basketball tips

Postby Doobie on Sun Jan 23, 2005 12:20 am

Well im starting to work out now that its winter over here , im gonna do indoor workouts before april , when i start going out and play basketball . Well either way i was hoping that you guys have any tips or free sites to give me . I have no money so basically its my body , a jump rope , and two 10 pound weights , my plan is to lose weight , gain at least 4 inch more vertical leap , and become quicker and stronger. Thats my goal for around April - May . I currenty weigh 157 and im 5'8 , my goal is to go to 140-145 , because i play like a guard , overweight guard . im 15 years old .

On the other hand , I am goin to try out for my basketball team next year . My goal is to gain at least 10 inch more hops, keep my weight under 150 , and be stronger , quicker , smarter , etc...

....I am hoping all of you may help , I am goin to play basketball all summer and spring and fall. By November I want to be way better so i can make the team. I bought a DVD with drill and tips. I will practice by myself because basically no one is as commited as me , and the ones who are , they leave for the summer . So basically I want to shoot around all summer and perfect my shot , my freethrows , and I want to practice driving in but i dont know how to do it by myself .

Their is no open gym around here so all my excersises have to be at home . I might be asking for too much but thanks if you can help . Sorry for asking more but i want to improve my handles greatly too , i am horrible in that , but still i can keep the ball in my hand (sometimes) . Thanks

Handles are easy, that's the first thing I learned. Unfortunately I went to far with all that streetball crap and started learning useless tricks like Slip n' Slide. What are you able to do now and hwo far do you want to go with it?

I want to go far enough to keep the ball in my hands , and be able to cross someone.
Right now im not quick with ball handling , i could drible and most i can do is behind the back or a crossover where you repeat , ummm left hand right hand left hand right hand ......... stuff like that.

Sounds to me like you need to work on guarding the ball with your body. keep your body in between your defender and the ball. Also work on dribbling with your eyes closed and/or blindfoled (start off with the eyes closed).

dribble 2 basketballs at once, that really works well

as far as vertical goes, 10 inches is a lot to strive for....i was doing Air Alert 3 and that screwed my ankle, it's pretty intense but i also did it during the bball season which isn't recommended. I might be able to help you out with a few sites but if you wanna gain at least 1 inch w/o working out all you do is stretch.....everymorning when you wake up stretch your legs for 5 mins and same before you g oto sleep....your natural elasticity will increase fairly quickly and you'l have an inch more on your vertical

I tried AA2, but I don't think I even did it right, so no gain for me.. :(

I need to improve my handles too. But I really don't know where its best to start. Generally my left hand is worse then my right hand. I can drive right but occasionaly I'll lose control of the ball if I go too fast. Left handed I can't really drive well at all. :( When people figure it out they just guard my right side. Whats the best way to improve your ball control when driving? At least you don't need a basket to practice handles, so I can do it out back on my patio..

How does stretching improve your vertical? Wouldn't it be based off how strong your legs are?

just wondering how tall are you?

150-160 is a good range for a guard.. if you go lower than that, you might have other guards dominate you physically

Do it. Over and over and over again. Just keep driving. I used to have this problem on fast breaks, going too fast and either losing the ball or putting up the layup way to hard and just bouncing it oof the bakcboard. Eventually you'll find what works for you.

Its been a few years since I have used Air Alert 2, but I can tell that it really works. At the age of 15 I went from having a 25+ something inch vertical leap to 32/34. Right now Im stuck around 30/32 I think because I havent worked on my legs in a while. I might start Air Alert once again in the summer however.

I can say it really works and it has improved my game, specially my rebounding. I was never known as a rebounder, but after I got a higher vertical leap and got a faster explosion from the ground it has turned into something I love the most in the game.

Air Alert works, but later on it will become helluva tough like my man: :mrt:

I would also do pushups at home if I were you every day when you are not practicing. I always had a hard time doing pushups for some reason, while I always was among the strongest players on the team. So I just started doing 3 sets of 5 pushups in the first week everyday when I didnt have practice, and add 5 reps after every week. Ive came to 75 pushups 3 times a day and my arms have become alot stronger and look more buffed now.

Does anyone use ankle weights ? I've got a few friends that use them and they can now at least touch the ring (they couldn't jump for shit before)

I can dunk the ring but only barely (I'm bout 6"0, 16 yrs old), so am wondering if I use ankle weights will it improve my vertical by a couple inches ? Caus thats probably all I need to be able to throw down a dunk in a game.
Play the game, win the fight!

i had a friend that used ankle weights.....stuffed his ankles up and now he can barely dunk, before he could do 2 hand reverses with ease now he has to use all his energy into getting off and doing a simple dunk which he cant half the time....and he's 6'6

The thing with ankle weights is that they can do as much harm as they can do good.

I remember I had ankle weights and I'd wear them everywhere. When I took them off, I felt like I was flying. So in that sense, they do work.

However, you have to be careful, because my knees started to hurt after a while. They put a lot of strain on your knees. So, when you use them, makes sure you're stretching before and after, and do some knee strengthening exercises, ice them, whatever, just take care of your legs.

Oh, and if you can just barely touch the rim, you need at least six more inches, and that's if you can palm the ball.
The task of the artist is to translate for us the essence of things we take for granted.

If everyone on this forum was Australian they'd be saying "ay?" right about now... the reason I picked Mazzocchi is basically he's done what I thought was impossible, and in the space of about 5 or 6 days has actually maked me like him somewhat. I've given him hell for about as long as I've seen him around... whether it was flaming him about his website, following him around and tormenting him for copying people or posting messages as other people on his and his girlfriends blog's... yet he takes it all, and doesn't spaz out about it. Well done, it's been a pretty good improvement (Y) .
