Postby Little_Big_Man on Fri Jan 07, 2005 8:15 am

I'm looking into building a gaming computer and wanted to know what you guys think. Here are the specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512k L2 Cache
GIGABYTE NVIDIA nForce4 4X Chipset Motherboard
Albatron nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3 PCI-EXPRESS
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, 1GB PC3200
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
RAIDMAX Blue 10-Bay ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front USB 2.0
ZBoard Gaming Keyboard

All for like $900 which includes shipping.

I have absolutely no idea what if those things named up there are good or bad...
...except $900 of course.

Please tell me if it's unusual for people not to know this? :?

      Um...no
The Albatron nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3 PCI-EXPRESS is the best card on the market.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512k L2 Cache

I've got an amd too, nice choice, 64bit.

GIGABYTE NVIDIA nForce4 4X Chipset Motherboard

Very Nice (Y) see if you can grab an asus motherboard.

Albatron nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3 PCI-EXPRESS

(boo yah!) $$$$$ Thats an 800+ dollar card here.
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, 1GB PC3200

(Y) really nice, really expensive but worth it for the performance. I'm pretty sure you can get a higher pc grade.
Just getting one stick of memory? Get two 512mb sticks so you can take advantage of dual channel ddr.

Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

meh

RAIDMAX Blue 10-Bay ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front USB 2.0

Meh, without knowing the other specs of the tower, how many case fans does it have?

ZBoard Gaming Keyboard

Its nice i guess....bastard

Are you planning on getting a dvd drive? :) Or do you already have one.

9800 is AGP 8x and the GeForce card listed above is 16x PCI Express which is butloads faster. Plus its using GDDR3 RAM which is faster also than the standard DDR on the ATI cards. The only card I've seen thats faster is the ATI x800 which is way overpriced at 700 bucks but it does use PCI Express though. Have you guys seen the NVidia SLI card thats based on the 6800GT GPU. Its a DUAL Card that is actually 2 cards on dual PCI Express slots that has a connector at the top that has an extra fast bus that allows the two cards to manipulate one monitor to double the bandwidth. Its a monster

I only got the 80G drive cause I already have about 250G of storage right now only my drives are standard ATA and not SATA. I also went with the CDRW cause it was only 20 bucks. I'll get the DVDRW later. I saw one of those for 62 bucks that was 16x DVD+R and 2.4x Dual Layer. I got the pc3200 ram because I'm cheap, lol. Could have gone faster but this should suffice. I didn't see an Asus PCI Express board for the 939pin AMD 64 but I'm sure I can find one. Just wondered what you guys thought of the current specs. Its pretty high end for the price imo.

go for a seagate sata hdd instead... 5 year warranty (Y) (Y)

the 6600 GT is a good card, awesome price compared to the x800's and 6800 GT's (Y) PCI-express (Y)(Y)

i brought a new comp about two or three months earlier and i had limited budget (my old comp fried), so i went with an asus mobo without PCI-express, amd64 3200+ (cheap, but only 2.0ghz) and the 6600 GT agp wasnt out yet... :( so i went with a 9800 pro instead.... but i'm still happy with it (Y)

i'm using an antec case, btw, its got a 120mm fan in the back, and quiet too (Y)

lol, there're too many (Y)'s in my post

The Albatron nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3 PCI-EXPRESS is the best card on the market.

6600GT is a mid range GPU. The 6800 Ultra is the big bitch for Nvidia at the moment. The 6600 is an 8 pixel pipeline card so its on par with 9800 series, definitely much better than the 9600.

Its not mid range nor high range. Its in the middle.... mid-high range

Your splitting hairs mate. I could tell you have brought the best and most amazing PC ever created, but you have not. Put a 6800 or X800 in your system then call it mid-high end, until you do its a mid range spec, which ever way you look at it.

Ill elaborate, on the market you will find,
Much faster CPU's
Much faster GPU's
Much faster HD's
And decent sound cards, etc.

I'm looking into building a gaming computer and wanted to know what you guys think

You cant call that a gaming PC, theres no way you can play the latest releases at high resolutions/graphics settings with post processing with a 6600, never gonna happen. However, for $900 thats a good deal and a decentish spec, so if your happy with it go for it.

This is high end Gaming machine:
P4e @ 3.8ghz
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
2gb 3200
6800Ultra
2x74gb Western Digital Raptors(RAID0) & 2x400gb Hitachi Deskstar(RAID5)
Audigy PLatinum Pro ZS
Aquagate Cool master
Plextor PX-716a X2

The guys im getting this from(Demonite) wont overclock the cpu anymore, when it comes im gonna spice it up to 4.5ghz.

Just to make it clear, theres fuck all wrong with your machine, it will play alot of games very well. All im saying is that its not a high end gaming machine and depending on what games you like to play, your probably going to struggle with most of the big games currently out there or being released this year. Future proof your shit buddy, you'll feel alot better in the months to come.

Actually the Radeon x800 with PCI Express is the best ATI card right now. From what I've seen so far on the nVIDIA cards is that the ones with 256MB of ram run at 500MHz where as the ones with 128MB run at 1000MHz. Also if the card I am looking to get is not top of the line but is very similar to the radeon 9800 I think this is a great card for the price. Besides its running on a PCI Express bus that has 4x the bandwidth of agp 8x so I think it is a far superior card to the radeon 9800 though slightly under the radeon x800's and nvidia 6800's. This card only costs $193USD compared to $500-700 for those other cards.

Your either very confused or somebody's been telling you porkies. When i get back to work I shall run my own benchmark for you, using NBA live.

Heres how you GPU performs in HL2, i did warn you so dont get upset.

What you have is a sheep in wolf's clothing, 6600 is a revamped 5600. 64bit & PCi express are not utilized by 1 single game right now and wont be for along time. Clock speeds are purley down to the individual manufacturer.

Look at the X700 fly
