A few new ideas for the forum

Postby Ruff Ryder on Fri Nov 26, 2004 10:21 am

I have a few new ideas for this forum, maybe when it moves to its new server.

Cards System
This is a major hack that will give your users/mods/admins (you choose) the right to give other users cards based upon their posts.

There are 4 types of cards.

RED - Ban the user immediately.
YELLOW - Give the users a warning, and if the total of warning is more than a limit that you set, then ban the user.
GREEN - Reactivate the user.
BLUE - Report post to moderators.

Fantasy Sports

This hack allows the admin to enter teams and games into the database. Then, users pick on what they think the outcome of each game will be. After the games are played, the admin will then go back in and enter in the scores from each of the games and the user's are given points based on their predictions. This hack also will keep up with the teams winning percentages and the amount of points given for wins is customizable through the admin panel.

Simply Merge
To use the demo, login as:

Username: test
Password: test

This hack will allow to merge two topics together. It adds an icon on viewtopic view, near the others (split, move, lock, delete).

You can input the topics id, the url to the topics or to a post of the topics, or select them in a list. It can also be used as a standalone add-on to the forums (only a link is required).

System Configuration

This hack places a system button at the bottom of each post that, when pressed, will pop up a window with information about that user's computer system.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/3348

Advanced Quick Reply
This hack allows users to use a quick reply form which is placed below every topic.

It will only display when a user has the reply access. The user will have an option to quote the last message and an option to recieve notification upon reply. If they have reply access, guest users can enter a name. A list of 24 smilies is shown below input area. Users can paste names of other users into the textarea just by clicking on the name. They can select any text on a page and quote it to the input area.

Poll Colors
This hack replaces the standard images for poll results and instead shows colors which depend on the percentage that has been given to that specific option.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/3929

Embedded URL's

This hack allows you to specify that you want to embed a URL in the topic. It works the same way as a Sticky or Announcement post.

The topic is shown in the forum as Embedded: Subject.

The parameters in the post are Embed URL as a radio option next to Sticky and Announcement ones as well as a text input field for supplying the url and width and height of the embedded object.

The embedded URL is positioned under the phpBB header and above the topics. You can specify the width and height of the embedded URL, using absolute or relative terms.

Full administrative control in the control panel.

The format of the boards is maintained.

iMinimize
This hack minimizes images which do not fit into preset sizes by changing the width and height params of img tags.

Users also have an ability to set sizes for images using [img][width:height]img_path[/img].

You can also specify an image to replace broken image links or use other information.

Normal Quick Reply
This is a Quick Reply hack for your phpBB 2, it allows user sto easily reply to topics without having to hit "Post Reply" and wait for the post reply screen (saving them one page).

The Quick Reply form is only show if the user has the reply access and the current topic is not closed.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/522

This hack allows users to report a post to an admin and/or moderator (also if installed to super moderator or junior admin) by a popup. You can config it in the admin panel. The report is only sent to the moderator(s) who moderate(s) the specific forum that the reported post is in.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/568

Resize Fix
Resize images in posts to prevent them from breaking the tables on templates with a fixed width. The resized image can be clicked and will open in full size in a new window.

I'll look for more later. Feedback?

I'd definitely like all of these installed once we're at the new server, there's some really useful stuff in there. Except the System Config one but I'm sure it serves a purpose.

Great stuff Ruffryder

Nice ideas Ruff. (Y) A few of those are things that need a bit of consideration but in light of certain issues, quite a few of them are almost necessary. It will be much easier to add those once the forum's on the new server (which shouldn't be too far off) - many thanks for the suggestions, I'd like to implement as many as possible. :)

Nice stuff ruff!
I hope Andrew implements them in this forum. I was wondering if there was a hack for our stats in dynasty. I tried the "code" button but the numbers are still not aligned right? Is there a solution for that?

Not at the moment, but I'm sure there's a BB code mod that adds new tags including tables.

The whole site is on the new server now, so I can start adding some of these mods. I'll have to wait until the weekend though - I'm only online briefly tonight to catch up on a few things. Feel free to keep the suggestions coming though. (Y)

I've added the Advanced Quick Reply and a signature control mod. I'm still deciding whether to install some of those mods, but I'll definitely be adding the Simply Merge Mod and one of the image restriction mods. If anyone has any further suggestions, please let me know. (Y)

I've seen the Card System work really well at The Dugout forums, so that one is worth considering. Also, I kinda like the Report Post one... it might come in useful at the forums no one really checks much.

Yeah, I'll be installing the Report Post mod sometime. I just installed the Resize Fix mod. I'll have to consider the card system.

How about some sort of Spell Check mod? For some of the non-English speaking blokes, and any semi-literates.

Well alot of people post slang and stuff like "u suck" or "sth" like that. But I guess they can ignore it. Anyway:

SpellingCow Spell Checker
This is a spell checker that is super easy to install, resource light and FREE! That is SpellingCow in a nut shell, but it is much more than that.

The highlights:

- Ridiculously easy installation that will work with any web form. Just drop in a file, make a few edits and go!

- Personal and portable dictionaries, usable from ANY site running SpellingCow!

- Optional ability to automatically spell check prior to posting.

- Easy to maintain - most upgrades will be automatic without requiring any changes to your server.

While the hack is GPL, the spell checking service is not, but is still free. Unobtrusive ads are displayed in the checker and a link back is required.

SpellingCow Spell Checker on Advanced Quick Reply Hack
This hack adds the SpellingCow Spell Checker to the Advanced Quick Reply Hack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Sidebar and Search Box on Index
This hack adds a navigation and search sidebar to your index page. You can easily add your own boxes and/or links as well.

Happy Anniversary Hack
This hack will display all the users who have an anniversary on the current date of the year. It does not display those who have a 0 year anniversary (those who just joined that day).

Search Box and Happy Anniversary Hack would be quite nice I think (y)

[Edit]: I found a cupple nice ones while looking around:

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=128153
Adds a custom title/rank field to a user's profile. Admin-configurable.

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=202851
Adds an additional link to the 'Private Message' popup window to open the Inbox in a new window instead in the main forum window.

Sounds good, definitely ones to consider. I was thinking of adding the custom title field to the user profiles, with various restrictions of course (ie must be registered for a certain amount of time before it can be edited).

How about just making it admin controlled and whoever wants a custom title can ask for it... maybe...
Although for a certain time would work to, not a certain post amount though...

btw, here is another link for phpbb mods.

Let moderators control the custom titles... that way I'll actually get one cause I haven't been joined up for too long :(

Also, the quote select thing works fine for me in Quick Reply.

Jae, what browser are you using?

I'm using Mozilla and I reckon Dahl is too so maybe that's the problem why the 'Quote Selected' doesn't work.

Perhaps we should also emphasize the SEARCH feature of the forum. So many users have been posting redundant topics. It's so frustrating to see users starting threads that have already been discussed a few weeks ago. It seems that the previous pages of the forum aren't visited anymore for reference. For the members who help other members, this could lessen their repeated responses.

Perhaps we could put a SEARCH BOX right above the RED bar of the forum, in line with the "NBA Live Series Center Forum Index -> ..." link? In this way, members would somehow be encouraged to use the search feature of the forum. :)
