What Kind of Player are You?

Fri Sep 24, 2004 9:15 am

Hi,

I've made this thread to see what kind of players people really are. I don't want anybody posting what they wish they were. And I know you guys can't tell if I'm lying or someone else is, but I guess we'll just have to trust eachother there. Anyways, here are some things about me as a player.

I play for my school team and a team I tried out for. I have been told on both teams that I am the best defender and shotblocker, but I am pretty skinny and not very strong, so I can't guard the low post, I get a lot of blocks by coming from behind or whatever. I am around 6 feet and my friends get mad at me for being so tall because most of them like to shoot a lot and aren't as tall as me. So basically I am a good one on one defender that can block shots but when I am told to guard someone in the low post, because I am not too big weight-wise I have trouble defending down there.

As for offense I can make open shots but I don't shoot much. I don't try to shoot over players as I am not a great shooter, but I like to drive and draw fouls because, I'm guessing because I'm a soccer player too, I am pretty fast and can stay on the court a pretty long time. As for driving, I am not good at finishing but I do draw a lot of fouls. And as I said I can make open shots, but I only shoot when I am open.

For my school team, I started at G/F but we had a small team and I was forced to play some PF, I can't usually defend guys who play that position, but offensivley, I have a pretty good fade when I'm not too far from the basket.

For my actual team, we have a bigger team so I play mostly SF but I'm not a starter on this team. My coach has made it clear to me that he will give me big minutes if they have a big offensive threat, because there are really only one other defender on the team other than me, but he is about 6'4" and he is our center.

As far as ballhandling goes, I can take care of the ball, but that's only because I don't do any moves with the ball because I suck at ballhandling. When I drive it's basically a dribble 2-3 dribbles and then the ball stays in my hands. Also I forgot to mention I have no problem with free throws, I can make them almost all the time, I wasn't always good at them, and thats why I didn't make a team the first time I ever tried out. But now, I'm not the best at this on either team, but I am happy with how I shoot them.

So I still have a lot of work to do offensivley and maybe I could try to work out a little more so I can play better low post defense. But my dad and I are huge soccer fanatics and with me and my dad, that always comes first.

So I want to hear what kinds of players you guys are. Thanks for any replies I get (Y).

don't mean to brag or anything but i really have no weaknesses. i have the ball handling abilities of iverson, duncan's post up game, kg's intensity, shaq's strength, artest's defense, peja's range and kidd's court vision.

 .. i wish

um honestly though i have pretty good ball handling skills.. i'm really comfortable going either left or right. i got decent range but i can't shoot the 3, i don't even try. when it comes to 3's i'm really streaky, either hot or cold (mostly the latter). i don't do all that flashy and 1 shit mainly because i don't have the patience to practice and pull that crap off, i actually work on my jumpshot. i'm pretty comfortable around the post and around the elbow.. furthest i'll go is probably the top of the key. if my shot's off i use the glass repeatedly.. i don't care if it's cheap, whatever works i stick with it :). i take pride playing defense.. can't block shots that well because i'm not that tall (5'8 and a half) but i can get the occassional stuff, usually from behind.. i got quick hands so im a good pick pocket.. im not that strong compared to other post players so if a big guy manages to isolate me down low they can pretty much have their way on me like a drunk 15 y/o school girl

Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:10 am

i believe this has been done before

Strengths: Outside shot, defense, hustle play
Weakness: PG is the only position i can play because i'm only 5'3, and i'm not a great passer or dribbler, in fact, i'm a terrible ball handler. My knees suck too, and i'm terribly out of shape at the moment :)

Sorry, I did a seacrh and didn't seem to find anything like this. I must have missed it, thats ok. I really just made this thread because I never made a thread before other than my dynasty. So you can just stop posting here if you like, or continue, which ever one you guys prefer. It doesn't matter to me. Sorry again.

i suck
not to mention i'm 5'5..... and yep... no more growing.... yay :D :D :D

But that's pretty crazy that you can dunk at 6'1", you must have some sick vert.

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:04 pm

eh i wish i could dunk, i can touch the rim but other than that (N)
whenever i feel like dunking i usually go for my neighbors fisher price hoop for their 5 y/o's

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:11 pm

i am a shooter with a accurate 15 ft jumper...either fade away or catch and shoot. weak on defense but always blocks somebody every game, i tend to let people drive by me and then i anticipate to block their shot, always comes up with one HUGE block in someone's face, but 4 outta 5 times, my opponent just scores on me. i have some post moves and a turn around fade away, effective at times. and im more effective guarding taller but not bigger opponent.

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:27 pm

strengths: Rebounding, Hustle, streaky 3pt shooting, free throws.

weakness's: sometimes don't see teammate on the court :)

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:37 pm

wow... a 6 feet power forward in high school? im 6 and i start as point for my high school. our centers like 6'9 so we have a decently large team. anyways, im mostly an athelete.. i dunt really like to shoot much even though people have said that i have a tendency to force up shots. i can shoot from basically anywhere on the floor excludin the nba three but i dunt like to be the main offensive force. thats because i was the youngest starter for the past two years (im a junior now.) my coach is trying to make me into the main offensice player this year because he thinks im good enough based on my past performances. while i only averaged 12 points last year due to an ankle injury, i did drop 42 in 3 quarters in my freshman debut on var.

im a decent defender because of my atheleticism and my length (i have a wingspan of 6'5) im a little on the thin side as i weigh 168lbs but im usually stronger than the people i guard. my ballhandling and passing skills are decent but again my biggest asset is my atheleticism. however, i sometimes get too caught up in the game, trying to do a fancy dunk in traffic or make some pass that i should make only at the park, and get benched for a long ass time. also, im injury prone because of how much i jump. i severly sprained my ankle last year after i landed on someone after a breakaway dunk. my other main weakness is that i love coming from the weak side for blocks. that usually results in a goal tend or me jumping over someone tho.

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:49 pm

My strengths: Mid-range J, getting to the rim, finishing with contact, free-throw's, passing (especially dropping it off when driving, and lobs over the fronting post defender) getting upcourt for easy buckets, jumping and hangtime.

average: Defender, 3pt shooter (I usually only shoot when I'm really open,) dribbling, blocking (for my size, 5'8'')

Weaknesses: passive, weak, not very quick, defensive rebounding, stealing, when I'm dribbling against pressure I don't have very good court vision.

My retarded coach last year played 6 players out of 12 for the first half of the season, then got bitched at and played the other 6 of us for the 2nd quarter. We started out down by 8, and were up by 9 at the half. We didn't play for the rest of the game. :x

Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:57 pm

Ya, we had the smallest team in the league, but then again theres only like 200 kids in my school so that might explain some of it.

But for my actual team, our center is 6'4" and our other post player is 6'6", the onlt reason the shorter guy is center is because he is built more than the 6'6" guy. and then the starting SF and SG are both around 6'1", 6"2 and our PG is like 5'7", around there.

I come off the bench to play SF. I'm only around 6'0"-6'1" but they don't play me at SG because I don't shoot very often. I spend most of my time in the post and around the free throw line, and if I do take threes it is usually from the corners.

I hope I do get to start one day, or at least hope I get someone to guard every game. If I just improve my offense more I think I can start next year.

But for my school team, it's so dam easy to make it and start, we have such a small team that basically anybody over 6 who has a little skills will make it. So I don't care much about the school team, its just a little extra practice.

Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:05 pm

do u play for an aau team or something? i play for one during the summer and its ridiculous. everyone on the team have at least a 30 inch vert and all we ever do is dunk. we use the games and tournaments more as dunk contests than practice for the high school season

Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:15 pm

No. The first team I played for was just a community team, but that sucked balls, no one passes and half of them don't even know what basketball is. So I decided to try for a higher league, for community, you pay and you play. I'm not sure what the league is called, but you have to try out for a team in your area, there are 12 spaces on every team and there are always about 30 kids trying out. The first time I didn't make it but the next year I did. I don't keep track of my stats, all I know is I'm the best defender and shot blocker on the team despite having guys who are 6 inches taller then me.

I also play for my school team, as I said earlier, its a joke.

And I join Hoop-It-Up every year, man, there are some sick players there. Guys can make you look so bad. The first year our team never won a game but this year we lost in the semis.

So I play ball pretty much everywhere but I am a huge soccer fan, I might even get a soccer scholarhip for university. But at school, I always play basketball whenever I have the time.

damn... i wished there was some community shit here so i can actually play organized basketball outside of the school year and summer leagues. our summer leagues for school ends at the beginning of august because theres a rule preventing the coaches from seeing the players during this time til school begins. so i just play aau during this time and its nothing but a joke

Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:33 pm

That sucks, can't believe there is no place you could try out for a team. Well man, good luck with ball in school and aau(). Maybe we'll play against eachother in the NBA one day...or maybe I'll just watch you play in the NBA and I'll just be a fan :D, hoping that one day they'll let 6'0" PF into the league .

Fri Sep 24, 2004 2:00 pm

haha..thanks.. good luck with ball in your school, community league, and hoop-it-up team. nba?? haha.. maybe ncaa if i can bump up my numbers this year but who knows

Fri Sep 24, 2004 2:09 pm

I currently dont play on any teams, but am prolly gonna be captain of the Senior team at my school when basketball starts in November.

My style:

Strengths:
Great Ball handling - not many turnovers
Great Shooter - from anywhere
Good Inside Scoring - driving
Pretty Good Lost Post for 5'9 - self explanitory
Good Rebounder - rebound with the tall guys which are tallest 6'5
Clutch - clutch when it comes to both offense and defense
Defense - good man-to-man but not so much in any zone but 3-2.

Weaknesses:
Too much of a hog - possibly even worse than Iverson
Court Vision - im definitely not JKidd when it comes to that
Passing - decent passer, but the hog play comes in
Speed and Quickness - not fast enough for my physique(5'9, 125LBS)
Free Throws - I can light it up from anywhere but the FT Line. Maybe a
mental block like they say in Live

That covers pretty much everything.

*EDIT : I forgot injuries. My knees tend to hurt sometimes, ive pulled my groin a couple of times, and ive had ankle problems since i was 5 (currently 17). Every once in a while I get something like shin splints, only it runs up the side of my leg and it starts at the ankle, it hurts like a bitch. I only had 1 time that really did me in for more than a couple days. I went up for a layup, didnt watch my landing and locked up my knee and then i landed on that leg and didnt play ball for a week, even though i should have waited atleast 2 weeks. And on top of that, I even missed the layup. :x

This thread's generally full of liars, but here goes...

Strengths:

Shooting. Might sound like an exaggeration but, I've got an awesome jump shot... I used to be a bit of a cut to the basket type, but I injured my ankles so I had to find some other way to be effective

Rebounding. I'm good at rebounding just because I've got really long arms. I'm 6'4 but my wingspan is about 6'10, well it was when I got it measured last year... I feel like a Gorilla sometimes lol, clothes aren't easy to buy either

Shot Blocking. Read above

Passing. This is my thing. For some reason passing the ball comes more naturally to me than anything else, and I'm better at it than anything else... when I was in England cause I was the tallest guy in the team I had to go play in the post, felt like Shaq at times minus the dunking and stuff

On-court Intelligence. I'm a pretty smart and efficient player, I'd rather score 10 points of 5/6 shooting than score 20 off 10/25. The cool thing is I can actually do that, not just say it.

Defense. Most of the teams I've played for have been full of offensive players, so I decided to work on my defense and try to get a starting spot. It seemed to work, and it's kept me in teams for years

Weaknesses:

Injuries. I'm a walking disaster. Well I say walking, as I speak I'm currently at home unable to walk because of an ankle injury... I get injured every 2nd game, whether it be my ankles, knee's shoulders... basically everything. I push myself pretty hard in games so I guess that's got somethin to do with it, along with not going through all of the procedures afterwards. I wanna go to McDonalds with the rest of the team, not sit around with a bag of ice on my leg. Here's a list of my current basketballing injuries:

Left, right ankles basically ruined for the last 6 years
Left shoulder pains after more than 2 hours of any physical activity... any
Knee problems
Dislocated finger, didnt pop it back into place properly so its a bit out of shape

Height. At 6'4 I'm too short to play PF and SF, but I can't dribble well enough to play SG, PG so I'm kinda stuck somewhere in the middle (N)

Dribbling. I'm pretty useless here. I've gotten marginally better over the years... the strangest thing is once I've got the ball I control it better than alot of people, but as soon as I try to dribble it just all tends to go wrong. The only reason I used to be able to get to the basket so well was cause I've got really long legs, so it'd only take me 2 big steps to get from the 3pt line to the hoop... I dont mean 2 normal steps, big stretching types

Training Ethics. Another bad point, I hate training. If I could just show up at the games I'd be fine but noooo i've gotta go train, so I whinge and complain about it non stop until it's over

Selflessness. Coaches here and in England were always tellin me to start taking more shots and not passing the ball so often. I guess the reason for this was just that I prefered setting someone else up rather than take responsibility for the shot myself. I just don't like letting people down, so I'd rather let someone else do it :D

Too One Dimensional on Offence. These days anyway. Because of all the injuries I've got I've seemingly become a white, less athletic Vince Carter. All I really do is either set people up with passes or shoot outside shots. Too injury prone to drive to the hoop, and once I try shooting in the post I seem to forget fundamentals and become some idiot creating all of my own moves. Most of which work, but that's besides the point.

Pidgeonholed. Hehe i like that word... basically what happens is as soon as I start playing with a team, the first thing they notice is my defense. It's the easiest thing to make stand out, because if you can get in the lane and stop passes, block shots, get steals, force turnovers etc coaches see that and they like it. However, that subsequentially makes them think you're just a defensive specialist so you don't end up getting as many shots as some other guys on the team.

Anyway that's my list, I don't know if I'll ever play basketball again.. really depends on how much surgery I wanna get on my legs I suppose

 you're 4 inches taller than me... and only.... 1 pound heavier.... ??

does that mean i'm fat/overweight? :P

oh yeah, i can run... that's it..... my dribbling is crap too :P
i can't shoot 3's.... maybe 1 in 10 so i don't take my chances.... and pffttt i'm 5'5.... most of my friends are taller than me when we play... so... yeah...

Fri Sep 24, 2004 5:59 pm

ankle injuries suck.. i severely sprained my left ankle two years ago in practice and i was told to do physio and halt my sporting activities for 6 weeks.. well i did physio for three and i started to play ball again in four, with a brace of course.. but yeah it definately made me a different player, i was still able to drive and i wasnt scared in doing so but i lost my quickness and i couldn't jump properly.. i couldn't put all the weight on my left foot and my ankle would get sore from doing jumpshots, cutting, etc.

anyone else find that injuries come at the worst times? right when i got mine i was probably in the best shape ever and i was learning how to knife through people without getting stripped and finishing- its pretty much the opposite now

Fri Sep 24, 2004 7:06 pm

I'd da kind of playa that don't call a hoe fo a week. I gotz 3-4 of em on da line at any one time. My weaknezz be ma love fo da game! I be playin hard. But I be a team playa, often I'll pass hoes to my boyz for eazy scorez! I handle my biz real well. Yeah! Just like my man Jaron said in my signature!
