lazy n00b section

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

lazy n00b section

Postby cklitsie on Sat Sep 04, 2004 8:06 am

i think this forums should get a section where the new members start to post with each other and arent allowed to post outside it, veteran members can post in the new section though.

moderators should decide if the new guys are ready to join the 'real' forum or if they should stay in the new section.

reason: im getting sick of new guys who fuck up the general talk, nba talk and 2004 announcements, many will know what i mean (i think)

im not saying im the perfect poster and im not a 'veteran' either (i think) but at least im mature enough to be on a forum.
i dont have anything against new members, but i hate n00bs (yeah theres a difference imo).

what do you think of my idea? if you hate, just say it, maybe this is just a n00b-idea from my side

I've been here 3 months but my training wheels are now off and Jae sent me on my way.

As for calven...yes...lock him up in a forum all by himself. The "lion" will survive no more.

Great idea ck. Like having a "trial" period, it's the same on all the forums it gets filled up with spammers when the new Live comes out.

Look Colin, im going to be straight with you, that means a whole post with out any insults.
I dont want to fight with anybody, Jae started that and i finished it The other few that joined in, had nothing to do anytihng me and Jae had said to each other, they just jumped straight in, with out even reading any of the posts in the thread.
Treat people the way you want to be treated. If you come at me with attitude your gonna get it back. Think about your 1st post directed at me.

How on Earth did I start it? You were the one who reacted so badly to a joke that wasn't even directed at you to begin with. I don't really care if you call me a bully, you haven't ended anything. In fact you could've escaped being banned earlier but now you've just gone and messed that up. You're an idiot.

Uh-oh I'm quivering at my keyboard. There's a idiot on the internet that I am going to "get it back" from.

I read the posts, and your blatant stupidity was too easy to pass up. I had to get me some of that action.

(Disclaimer: I'm not against change, I just prefer change when it's for the better)

Do any other forums use that method though? I think that encouraging new members to post constructively and getting rid of them if it's clear they're only here to spam or flame is a fairer system.

I think the only similar thing I've seen was at a rugby league forum they had a "n00b" section, they were allowed to post anywhere but it was just a place where the new guys could post if they didn't feel entirely comfortable just posting in the main sections straight away. Apart from that I've read somewhere that needed a confirmation to be registered tends to make people want to make more of an effort when they post, but I'm not sure.

I read another forum (car related) where they have an introductions type section. In my opinion this is a pretty cool way of being eased in, plus the vets can get to know the new guys when they make their introduction. People would be more inclined to say "welcome aboard" than "fuck off", and the new guys would probably be less likely to be hassholes if they're welcomed in or initiated in a sense.

Also most people would read a forum for a while before they post. As with the car forum I visit, I read it for a while, noticed that all the newbies make their first post in the introduction section, post a pic of their ride, where they're from etc., and figuring that this was the process, or tradition. So I did it too. So yeah, I do think there would be good use for such a section... (y) Aight.

Aight playa word yo.

I like this idea (Y) It shouldn't be in this thread though, it should have a whole specific forum. Up the top in the "NBA Live Series Center" bunch of forums where NLSC Issues is so its up the top.

It has two advantages. For us: We get to know the new fresh meat coming in and give them a welcome. For the new member: They get a nice welcome and are more likely to contribute in a positive way etc.

I think we should do this Andrew, i can't see any disadvantages.

The main disadvantages as I see them:

1. It's restricting all new members for something that a select few might do. Would the rule apply to everyone? And would an initiation forum turn away mature people who intend to be good members? No one wants to jump through hoops to be allowed to post.

2. If members aren't allowed to post outside the initiation forum until they're ready, they're going to miss out on discussions. By the time they get in, the discussion could be over and then people will be upset when they a) start a new thread about the same topic or b) bump up the topic after it's been done with.

3. I'm not sure how you would accomplish the restriction - there'd have to be a phpBB mod for it.

Maybe a "Community" or "Town Square" forum would be more appropriate - a way for new members to introduce themselves. Of course, their reception depends not only on their attitude but the willingness of forum vets to actually welcome them. ;) Enforcing the restriction would be difficult and would surely turn some people away.

I don't think the restriction is necessary. I do think however that it would be nice to have a section for new members to introduce themselves. Hell we could all re-introduce ourselves to get the ball rolling (y)

That would be fine, so long as people make use of the board. Traditionally people have introduced themselves in General Talk, but a "Community" section for introductions (and maybe even signature testing and/or newbie questions) might be better. Threads like the Info/Getting to Know You sticky would probably fit in there as well.

I like the idea of restriction because lets face it, the ratio of good n00bs to fuckwits is about 1:10.

I'm not fussed if the forum doesn't have restrictions. In fact, when i was describing the way i pictured it, i wasn't even thinking of it having restrictions. Rather it's more of a meeting place for new members. (Y)

That kind of a section is a good idea and I certainly prefer it to the restrictions (which as I said would be difficult to enforce), my only concern is people bothering to use it. I'm sure it would be fairly slow to begin with (not unlike the Other Basketball Leagues section) but perhaps placing it right up there with NLSC Issues at the top of the page will yield success.

Perhaps we should put it to a vote though - right now General Talk can easily serve the same purpose.
