Kanye Next Best Thing?

Postby -BHZMAFIA- on Wed Jul 21, 2004 3:30 am

After I kept listening to his CD over and over and trying to find some of the lyrics and beats he had, I think he could possibly be the next Jay-Z as in one of the best rappers of all time. If he isn't a one year wonder, he will be. He is also signed with one of the best record labels in Roc-A-Fella Records so I think he may be a great rapper at some point.

Yeah, Kanye is one of the best rappers I've ever heard. When I bought his CD, I wasn't expecting it to be that good. I actually went to the store with Sheek Louch( ) as my first priority, but when I saw I was just a few dollars short and I could get two CD's I asked my mom for a few more dollars and got both. Kanye has got alot more time in my CD player than Sheek.

Kanye doesn't take himself seriously, and I think that's his appeal...I think in the song with Ludacris (the name escapes me) he says something like "now I'm rapping bout money hoes and jewels again" after rapping that he'll make a record that changes the world or something...

Spaceship is probably my favorite, just because of the first line: "If my manager insults me again/I will be assaulting him"

I like them all except the tracks with the talking and "Breath In, Breath Out" with Ludacris. What I usually listen to going to school in the morning are tracks:
    2 We don't care
    4 All Falls Down
    6 Space Ship(sometimes)
    7 Jesus Walks
    8 Never Let me Down
    9 Get em High
    12 Slow Jamz
    15 School Spirit
    18 2 words
    19 Through the Wire
    20 Family Business

I like track 18 (2 words), it is one of my facorites.

Kanye is quite cocky(some of you may know that already), and stupid. In the concert in Denver he said Thank You Seattle to the crowd, and the whole crowd is like booing him, then he said "You can't boo me, I saved hip-hop!" Some fans said they were never gonna buy another Kanye cd again. After this, I kind of stopped listening to his CD.

On topic, I like Spaceship, Two words, and Jesus Walks.

I got the Kanye CD but i wouldn't say that he's a special rapper. No one man can save Hip-Hop. Anyways, later i will do a review of the CD here so you will know what I mean.

Kayne has some nice songs but he certainly isnt saving hip hop and he definetly isnt the first person to speak about things other than bling etc.

People just think he is something greater and more unique than he is because they dont dig deep enough into rap music and instead just listen to the stuff they preach on tv, radio etc.

There are a lot of artists who speak about issues u just dont see it on tv, radio 24/7. Cormega, Saigon, The Roots, Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, KRS-One, Nas, Outlawz, and of course Pac and many others.

I dont blame u for listening to Kayne nor do i dislike him I just dont like when people think hes saying something I havent heard before from better artists. He may slightly stand out from the mainstream but he doesnt stand when u venture off outside of the mainstream.

ok, time to do my review

I'm gonna say this being totally honest. Kanye West is an average rapper at best. The only thing that saves his CD is his production. Lyrically Kanye isn't very good. He's OK, but throughout he fails to stay on topic. One common theme in the CD is his constant knocking of College. This gets really annoying and it isn't exactly thebest thing to tell kids. The skits are terrible, and there is too many of them. Last Call is 12mins long, you won't listen to it more than 2 times if that. It just takes up CD space. This CD has 21 tracks but only 13 songs (Last Call not included)

Slow Jamz is good, but on Kanye's CD its too long, he should of had the same version as Twista.

One other thing, count the actual number of verses that Kanye does in the album. Not nearly enough. There are too many guests here. You have GLC, Consequence, Jay-z (who does 2 verses on one song), Consequence, Kweli, Common, Twista, Mos Def & Freeway. That's 9 guests who get a verse (Jay gets 2 and i think Freeway might as well) and theres only 13 songs. This CD is more "Kanye West and friends" rather than just Kanye West. The fact that he has many guests adds to the strengths of the album. Not many artists have this many guests on their albums....not the great ones.

For me the best track is "Two words" because it has a hot verse by Mos.

Kanyes flow and the tracks with guests on he seems to slow the songs down. If it wasn't for the production this album would be pretty poor. This album may win many awards but it's not that great. It may be the best album of the year but we still have new releases from Nas, Talib Kweli, Tupac and Mos Def to consider just to name a few. Overall albums from 04 have been pretty poor, the best has been The Roots tipping point.

I'm no rap guru, but like MTV's best rapper thing said, I think Eminem is the next best lyrically talented rapper besides TuPac Shakur & B.I.G.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about his lyrics, I'm talking about the way his songs are constructed.

Jackal can you elaborate on "the way his songs are constructed". I think the best lyricists are underground rappers. Most people think of commercial artists but guys like Nas, kweli, Common, Big L, Mos Def are way better lyricists than anything on the commercial scene

Again, I'm no rap guru, so please bare with me.

What I meant was, his lyrics just seem to fit into each other, it's as if you can hear the smoothness of the lyrics as if they are some type of silver nitrate. (Fluidy)

Hmm, by construction I mean, everything fits together so well...

I like Nas too, as I said, I'm not really "underground" as you say, but I like to listen to some rap, for one reason only though..it's as if listening to a story. Now it's just upto us to decide what kind of story we want to hear.

I don't know, I just like guys like Eminem & TuPac because they're not constantly rapping about bitches, plasma tv's and Bentley's. After awhile, it gets boring. (50 Cent anyone?)

Another type of rapper is the "Oh, I'mma kick your ass, I'm to tough type." (Ja Rule? Nuff said)

I like TuPac because he lets us in his life, it's as if we're seeing things through someone else's eyes. Same with Eminem, at times he gets on my nerves with his Gay Bashing, mom cursing self. But then again, I'm always bitching about Kobe. It's just stuff we hate, we love to talk about stuff we hate, we love to express how much we hate the things we hate.

So yeah, it's as if I'm right next to him when he's talking about the munchaesen (sp?) syndrome on his CD's.

Oh, and ofcourse, the main reason I like him is because he's such an asshole, so egotistical..such an arrogant pompous know it all prick.

(Remind you of someone? )

Well Eminem could be one of the next special rappers, but he won't be top 3 within in the categories of Biggie and 2 Pac.

Not my words my friend, it was some special on MTV.

They ranked like the top 30 or something rappers.

It went TuPac-Biggie-Eminem. The announcer said you could interchange Biggie & Pac.

They had alot of others guys I didn't know, some of who I did were Nas (he was pretty down there), Snoop Dog & Dr. Dre.

whatever MTV says is bullshit. Dr Dre??? hahah, the dude has made like 2 CD's, and how long did it take him to do that?

Ok yeah Nas isn't underground but i named names that ppl would be familiar with

Album sales don't mean jack 99% of the time. Look at 2 Quarters and She-Unit....they sell because they target the teenage audience. (Guns, Drugs, Sex etc). Kweli for example gets much less sales (also due to marketing reasons) but he talks about 9/11, police brutality, teenage pregnancy etc. Too me all the best rappers are the socially conscious ones. I'm all about lyrics & topics rather than skills
