Yep. Unfortunately I had imported a Japanese one to save a few hundred bucks since they were so expensive back then. Generally if your PS3 breaks, you pay Sony Australia $150 to repair it I believe. Wish I had of spent the extra & got a local PAL console as Sony Australia wouldn't touch it because Japanese NTSC model.
I ended up buying a new one locally with warranty & haven't had any problems to date in the two plus years that I've owned it. Fingers crossed that continues. I think early model ones are more prone to have red light issue.
As for your situation, if you've got a US console, I'd suggest contacting Sony US. I know it's out of warranty but they might have a repair option like they do in Australia.

i don't know about sending it in. there's no guarantee that they can fix it. at this point, i'm taking it apart and seeing if i can fix it myself, otherwise, im calling it a loss and then opening up the disc drive to get my cod mw2 out of there.

I don't even use it that much, I don't send texts or anything, I have wifi/GPS disabled, but I still lose at least 10% of my battery after not even 5 min online or on the Android market.
I downloaded a task killer app to try to get rid of useless programs in the background but I' don't think it'll do the trick, so I guess I'm gonna have to recharge that thing every fucking day...

A lot jammed in there but I couldn't work out problem with mine. Might've helped if I had proper electrical testing gear, but ahh well. Good luck.

Never expect sex/hooking up, chicks can sense it and it turns them off.

Haven't been able to reboot since then, I can't even access safe mode. I tried using the Windows installation DVD to do some repair but nothing will work, it just won't reboot anymore...
