Because
kangaroos are not allowed to be placed as a symbol that can be seen often by a lot of people.
They just can't.

The trip included a visit to Parliament House, since one of our friends is English and has been living in Australia for a little under two years, and it was his first time in Canberra. As we stood in the rooftop garden/sitting area/tourist attraction thing, looking up at the Australian flag, he commented "There's only one thing I like about that flag." I immediately replied "Yeah, the Southern Cross is great, isn't it?" We all laughed, and Australia claimed another victory over England.
And that's why I salute the Australian flag.
Why did you guys keep the stupid Union Jack anyway? Why not go all Canada about it and just get a flag with a kangaroo on it?
It's not like we have a beaver or grizzly bear in our flag. Besides, once you taste our maple syrup, you will file for an immigration to Canada. Anyways, awesome looking maple leaf flag.

Good question. I suppose because no one has yet to design a new flag that has garnered enough support to replace the current one. The Union Jack was kept because at the time of federation, Australians still saw themselves as having very close ties to England and indeed that's why a lot of Australian men enthusiastically signed up to fight in the first World War; they felt it was their duty. Attitudes have changed a bit since then, but again I think it comes down to not having a popular enough alternative to make changing the flag a priority.

I'd vote for Matthew's Aboriginal flag with the smiley face on it.

I'll update it later, I am stunned at the lack of Australians. Not so much at the Pinoy outbreak however.

Im Filipino born but raised since the age of one here in Australia (turning 20 this year) and such consider myself
Aussie through and through. I look Filo, speak with an aussie accent, I wear blue wifebeaters during the summer, haviiaanas down to the beach and love to death my basketball, footy and boxing

Funny thing is Filipino and Australian culture mix VERY well with eachother, we both share intense love of sports, we're all social, laid back, just want to have fun sort of people. All my Aussie friends love our food and our culture (and a number of them have dated Filo girls too), and through out my whole school life (primary, secondary and uni) I dont think ive ever heard any negative comments against Filo-aussies.

So long as you have Australian citizenship, I'd say it's a fair claim to say you're Australian.
