Rethink defining "poor".
Well, I certainly hope we're not defining all of those who can't afford (not in that they have enough money to physically do it, but that they can make the purchases and not cripple themselves financially) what was mentioned that garnered Don's reply as 'poor' people, or else I imagine 95+% of the United States is 'poor'.
If any of my friends got a few years old Nissan Maxima, a PS3 + 5 games, 2 new pairs of shoes (I'll assume they're not the Wal-Mart brand), and a digital camera with a printer... I may not jump to the conclusion that these people were filthy rich, per se, but they are in the upper echelon of upper middle class, and said friend is spoiled beyond belief.

Maybe upper middle class, but IMO the worse thing is when a kid can't get his lesson in school and ends up with like a 2.0GPA and barely making it, then their parents buy him the same amount of stuff. Because sometime it has to deal with being a good son, because I got a friend who made a 13 on the ACT and is barely getting by his senior year, but he is so spoiled that his parents don't even try to make him study harder for school. And he goes out all the time, like he has no worries in the world
Yet, he still gets whatever he wants, so I would kinda consider more spoiled than my other friend who helps take care his little brother and sister when his parents are at work, and got a 30 on the ACT and ranks in the top 15 in the senior class. So, I guess parents in the US express themselves in different ways, but the thing is he really never even asked for all of that stuff except for trying to get a car and it didn't neccessarily had to be the Maxima. Since this is last year being at home more than likely since he will be going off the college, I guess they wanted him to get some real nice things for Christmas this year. But, I would rather be the parent spoiling my kid who is doing well for himself and has the chance of being something in life, than spoil my kid when he ain't doing shit.

It sounds like a case of the mother and father being a friend to the child instead of actually being a parent.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to that conclusion, as I've come across a number of parents who don't go the 'friend' route but still spoil their children rotten; but it wouldn't surprise me, either.

True no parent should spend over $1000 for your child especially on games because your parents always nag you to quit playing so much yet they buy you so many.
Parents might buy you a used car or something. That might be the only thing thats acceptable around or over $1000.

At least the coal doesn't need a patch to do it's job properly.
