My sister told me this morning. I watched his show a couple of times, he was great guy.

would've been more shocking if he got run over by a car or something...

RIP.

Damn, this is sad news. I remember watching his show all the time when it was on here and loving every second of it. It's probably what got me interested in snakes to begin with... What makes it all so much worse is that he was a really, really great guy, rather than just some random TV personality doing it for the money and fame. I hope his family will be alright and continue the good cause. Best of wishes to them all.

Nearly 24hrs since the news broke here in Sydney and still can't believe it. See him on tv and hear him on the radio before what happened yesterday and I still think he's alive. He will always live on in our memories.

The stingray's barb actually punctured his heart though so it was a freak accident. People who are stung on the arms and legs are usually in a lot of pain but don't usually die from the injuries.

This is very sad to begin with and even more sad to think how unlikely this was.

did anyone see the size of the barb that punctured his chest? they showed a guy on the news that had personally stood on a barb that looked about 10-15cm long and it went up thru his foot, but steve was hit by one much larger and from what i remember it looked about 25-30cm long. RIP Steve

Btw if you get stung by a sting ray I heard on the radio if u want to get rid of the pain u have to put near boiling water to get rid of it.

Actually, and i'm being completely serious here, you're supposed to pee on it. it neutralises the venom (to an extent), however in this case, it wasnt really a sting, it was the barb or spike puncturing his heart. he really never had a chance.

From what I've read, only 3 people in Australia have ever been killed by a stingray, pretty shocking.

I think so. There's a bit of a debate going on in the media about whether it's 2 or 3 deaths, but it's definitely rare either way.

Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:56 pm

i was watching anderson cooper 360 and they were saying he was the only the 2nd person to die of a stingray ... sting.

Tue Sep 05, 2006 4:04 pm

I just read in a news article (some authorities have seen the video of him being killed) that he was swimming above the stingray and the camera man was in front of it, it got scared (presumably by the camera man) and started thrashing around, obviously piercing him in the heart... he pulled the spike out of his heart then lost consciousness, the camera man didnt even know anything had gone wrong until he started bleeding. I hope this doesn't end up one of those videos that floats around the internet or whatever (N)

Tue Sep 05, 2006 5:26 pm

it'll end up on this weeks episode of 20 to 1 (N)

Tue Sep 05, 2006 7:33 pm

You hear of death on the news all the time...but when i heard the news my first emotion was shock and disbelief, much the same as when princess diana died...didn't really think it could happen to people we know so well...

Me too, but considering that someone already edited his Wikipedia entry to add "Steve Irwin is dead, LOLOLOLOLOLOL" (it's since been removed) it wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah thats what I thought, everything he did was for a good cause rather than money. I imagine a lot of you Aussies would have visited the Australia Zoo near Brisbane, im sure a lot of his money went into making that place for the animals.

Its really unlucky that it was such a freak accident, and really feel for his wife who would have had to find out about it while she was out tramping.

RIP

Gah, this sucks. Such a beautiful young family. Painfully ironic that he got taken down by a relatively NON dangerous animal.

I was told that it was a one in a million chance. Really shitty.

God, you continue to sink to new lows. I'm suprised you didn't actually say "i told you so". How can you even imply that this was predicted?
