Coach Parreira shout instructions to his players.
RESULT: BRAZIL 1-1 JAPAN
GOALS: Juninho (36th), Takahara (79th)
MAN OF THE MATCH:Ronaldinho (1 ast)
Having more or less guaranteed their spot in the final 16, Brazil rested a few of their superstar starters, including Ronaldo, in what was a very uninspired performance in their final group game. Those being rested were Ronaldo (Fred), Adriano (Robinho), Ze Roberto (Juninho), Cafu (Cicinho), R. Carlos (Gilberto) and Emerson (Gilberto Silva). This gave coach Parreira an opportunity to observe the quality of his bench and it would have been a successful day if not for a late spoiler from the Japanese. Knowing they only needed a point from the match, Brazil dominated possession on their way to running out the clock at 1-1.
THE GOALS
Juninho scores a marvelous strike off the feed from Ronaldinho.
Takahara seals a draw for Japan with his head.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Robinho missing one of his many chances.
Ronaldinho in action.
Kaka fires away.
Robinho races past his man.
Even though they were greatly outplayed by their reserves, the Japanese must have been happy to steal a point away from the mighty Brazil. At certain points in the game they showed great poise on defense and it felt as though Brazil were going nowhere with as much possession as they had. The Japanese goalkeeper made many key saves during the game but you could almost get the feeling this match could of ended 5-0 if the Brazilians wished it. It seemed more like they were preserving energy for th next round. Juninho may challenge Ze Roberto for a starting spot in Parreira's lineup but only time will tell.
INJURY SCARE
Ronaldinho picked up a slight ankle sprain during the 2nd half injury time against Japan. It doesn not seem serious but team doctors ill monitor him carefully before the next game and coach Parreira may rest him at that point if need be.
The rest of the Brazilian squad should be fit and ready for their next match against Poland in the round of 16.
