You've been watching espn too much .

 probably not too far from the truth....I do have study to do, but it never seems to be a priority....

Matthew wrote:If you need a dvd player, the 360 does have that. But be carefull, it does have region coding, so if you have nba dvd's from overseas, they may not work.

shit, didn't even think of that....I just got a whole bunch of nba dvd's recently (Andrew seemed to edge me towards them in the end  )....

Matthew wrote:If you do decide to wait say 3 months, you might even be able to pick up one second hand in the trading post for $500. Thats purely specualtion of course, but it could happen.

I'll probably trade in PS2, but it'd still be $400 so don't know about that....money isn't the issue, can afford it regardless....mate started working at EB about a month ago, so I'll talk to him & maybe he can hook me up with a good deal once he's been working there a bit longer....staff discount per se....

Matthew wrote:I'm assuming your nephew is fairly young? If he is he'll probably love some of the simplier games on xbox marketplace. Last night i downloaded and play UNO and you can even play that against 3 other players. Tell me that isnt cool :proud:.

nephew is almost 6....he's into the Tony Hawk games, Wrestling etc....although I'd like to keep him away from Wrestling for the time being, as he likes to do it on everyone else if he sees or plays it

UNO does sounds awesome....damn, all this talk about it makes me want to go down and get a 360 right now

couple of quick questions if you could answer, that would be greatly appreciated:
1. I've heard a bit about XBox Live but really don't know a lot about it....I hear you get Silver edition when you buy console & 1 month worth of Gold....what are subscription/monthly fees like? or can you get Silver free?
2. NBA2k6....no doubt it's a lot better than Live, but it it worth holding out for NBA2k7, or just biting bullet & getting?!?

cheers for all your help Matthew

If you're still busy with all your work and such, I'd wait until 2k7

I'll always be busy at work & with studies so there's no point factoring that into it....it's whether the game is worth getting right now, or worth waiting....regardless, I would get 2k7

shit, didn't even think of that....I just got a whole bunch of nba dvd's recently (Andrew seemed to edge me towards them in the end Laughing )....

Yeah I didn't think about it either. The following dvd's work:
Lakers, Philly and Bulls dynasty sets(IMPORTED)
All auusie released dvds (dunks and ankle breakers, top 100 plays, nba foundation)
Spurs 2005 championship dvd(IMPORTED)
Ultimate Jordan(IMPORTED)

The ones that dont work:
MJ to the Max
Spurs 2003 championship dvd
NBA @ 50

I have no idea why the 2003 dvd doesnt work and the 2005 does. Maybe they have improved encoding somehow.

But if you see a cheap second hand xbox 360, you can trade the ps2 in for some games. EB can very sly in their promotions. For example, alot of people got burnt with their "trade in a ps2 or xbox with games and get a cheaper 360". The 360 was the core version, so no hard drive or remote or wireless controller.

Theres a 2 for the price of one deal, tony hawk and gun (an old western style game that got decent reviews) for $100. I've never been a big fan of skateboarding games so i cant tell you if its good.
UNO does sounds awesome....damn, all this talk about it makes me want to go down and get a 360 right now

It's such a relaxing game lol. Its like poker for idiots. I love it.

1. I've heard a bit about XBox Live but really don't know a lot about it....I hear you get Silver edition when you buy console & 1 month worth of Gold....what are subscription/monthly fees like? or can you get Silver free?

Silver is always free, it enables you to do everything but play games online. so you can download games like uno, trailers, roster updates etc. You also get a month free of gold. If you are going to get it, i suggest the starter kit. A year subscription is $80, and that comes in the started kit, but you also get a headset which is invaluable for playing online. But xbox gold is worth it becuase games like halo, and even nba 2k or madden are worth more becuase multiplayer has so much more replay value than single player. But i'll be honest, i dont think $80 a year justifies what it would cost microsoft to run the service, becuase except for ea games its all p2p. With that being said, i'd probably spend $200 a year on it if i had to, becuase it adds so much more to the games.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the nba 2k always gets released around january here, not early november like nba live. if you get a 360 within the next two months, you'd still have at least 6 months to play it and get your moneys worth. id definately suggest getting nba 2k and halo 2 (i know its an original xbox game, but once you play it on live you'll see how good gaming is) if you do get a 360. Madden is great if you enjoy nfl games, and call of duty 2 is also good.

I've got NBA @ 50 (not very good IMHO) but I've got those dynasty sets plus Celtics minus Bulls, so I'm glad they will work & same with Ultimate Jordan....I guess the only way for me to find out is to get it & see what works & what doesn't....sounds like the main ones with the full games work which is the main thing I guess....at least I know now so I'm prepared & thus won't get disappointed....

damn, those sly bastards....I'd obviously want more than the core version....I noticed at Target there was a XBox360 Pack with King Kong (I'd no doubt trade it in), Silver XBox Live, Gold XBox Live for a month, the remote thing, hard drive, the headset & so on for $689 (EB is advertising $650 but I'm not sure what pack that is, maybe core, who knows)....

yeah, I've seen that pack, but I'd probably avoid it for now....Tony Hawk just looks like an XBox port with slightly improved graphics....there will no doubt be another one out within the year with better graphics & gameplay....

for me UNO was always a game I played when drinking, but is a nice added bonus which I can't see someone like Sony having (I've had Sony PSX & PS2)....

damn $80....that's sweet bugger all....I've heard about online services wanting like $40 per month & that's just ridiculous, but when you're only talking less than $7 per month, I'd definitely pay that in a heartbeat to lose to you in 2k6 (until I get better of course  )

yeah, if I was to get 360 soon, would definitely get 2k6 (& avoid Live)....probably still get Live '07 for 360 as well as 2k7, provided Live has franchise modes & stuff....

as for Madden, I'd definitely get Madden '07 provided it had all it's franchise mode options back....now I've got ESPN I can finally get back in the gridiron fold....I always enjoyed the game....not as much as the bball titles, but yeah....

will look at getting college titles if 360 can be modded to play NTSC games (not for piracy, I just wanna play the titles that don't make it to PAL)....

cheers Matthew, you've definitely helped out....as you can probably guess, I was heavily leaning towards the 360 anyways, but it's always good to get some unbiased opinions  I'll probably start to look into getting one & try to find the best deal as well as talk to my mate (a true console guy) for further info....

Hey X, All the questions you asked were basically what I was going to ask!

I've been thinking of getting a 360 to play nba 2k6, which looks so sweet from your dynasty Matthew, and possibly Call of Duty 2 or something. Got a bit of cash lined up after my 21st bday and I've been wondering what to get. Now I'm pretty confiedent that I'll grab the 360 and a new digital camera. Cheers for the help, albeit indirectly (Y)

np Ty....I haven't got a 360 yet, but will probably get one after my exam in 3 weeks time....& get 2k6 at same time....probably won't upgrade to broadband (& thus XBox Live) until new year when 2k7 comes out....

That exactly what I'm thinking. I've got 3 exams coming up in a couple of weeks plus my mini-thesis due, so after that I'll go grab the 360 with 2k6 and another game.

I live on campus so I can't use Xbox live over the uni network, I believe, but when I go home to visit the folks I'll take advantage of the broadband there to get some updates etc. When I move out next year I'll set up a good broadband connection and go from there.

What some of you guys are forgetting is how much better the regular xbox was then the ps2.In My eyes the xbox will always prevail. In reality the ps3 will be no different than the 360 and shit ray dosnt make the ps3 any better because game developers wont use all of that space For games. There is no debate over this one they will be about the same but subtle differences witch will draw you from one and hate the other.ie blue ray/hd dvd

does anybody know if youll have to pay to go online on the ps3, or will it be free like the ps2

Wed Jun 07, 2006 10:04 am

i´ve to go with the 360... ´cause they ain´t gonna release the ps3 here, at least that´s what the gorvernment says, that itll be to expensive and the games to and it wont be popular, i think they should allow.. whoever has money to afford well, their luck then!

After going into EB yesterday, I feel even better about my XBox 360 purchase....they were putting up a poster asking for AUD$699 for PS3 when you trade in your old PS2 console & 25 games....I couldn't believe it....

I traded in my old PS2 & 12-13 games & got my XBox 360 for like AUD$350-$360....

I noticed on the Wii poster, it said PS2 & 25 games has trade-in value of about AUD$300....damn, I got a little more than AUD$250 for my trade-in with half that number of games....and that was only 2 months ago....

given that the trade-in appears to be $300 off retail price, it looks like PS3 will definitely release at AUD$999 in Australia, not including any games or anything....

I just feel sorry for the Kiwis, who saw there exchange rates plummet to 80 cents to 1 Aussie dollar....they'll be paying up to NZ$1,300 for just the console....damn

after looking at the poster of the new PS3 with the same old controller, I felt a little underwhelmed....but I guess it's what's under the bonnet that counts....but it's still hard for most casual gamers to swallow....

even my Nintendo & Sony fanboy friend who works at EB pre-order Saints Row the other day even though he doesn't have a 360 console, which means he's gonna be forgoing the PS3, & picking up a Wii & 360....

anyway, enough ranting, I thought a couple of Aussies would like to know....

Wed Aug 09, 2006 12:39 pm

I'm certain ps3 will be the better console but their price made me get a 360. Not to mention the ease and functionality/features of xbox live.

Wed Aug 09, 2006 12:57 pm

For me, what it will come down to, is the little things. Like being able to hook up your ipod to the console, if the PS3 can't do that, Ima get a X360. If the PS3 can, then I'll probably get the PS3 because I'm soooo used to the controllers, and because I can hook up my PSP and will probably be able to do some shit with that. The price doesn't really matter. It will take me awhile to save up for either one so w/e, may as well get the one I want more.

Thu Aug 10, 2006 6:23 am

Well graphics wise, which should i get on a normal TV, not HDTV? I'm leaning towards 360, because of the raving reviews.
