Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

This thread is obviously going to get larger when NBA 2K8 is released; I'm saying if mods start merging threads asking about the Dunk Contest controls into this thread, I may have an aneurysm.
And that statement being NBA Talk-specific means that all discussion for any of the numerous Grand Theft Auto games should continue to be funnelled into one giant thread? I guess I just don't understand the logic here - it's like we're trying to minimize the amount of threads when it isn't a problem.

Good thing this is a preview thread then
There's only two mods who remotely do anything here, Ty-Land and myself... so you won't have to worry about your aneurysm's just yet. I personally feel threads like...
Title: demo
Content: why do the players run wierd
it looks okay better than last year
.. aren't worth their own threads.

Where's the Demo thread?
This is silly, time to sleep.
P.S. 402 replies is a big thread. Nobody wants to read 402 posts to see if their obscure question has been asked already.

Isn't a demo just a playable preview of the game
P.S. 402 replies is a big thread. Nobody wants to read 402 posts to see if their obscure question has been asked already.
So they can just ask it again. If it's obscure no one's going to flame them for asking something that's already been explained. Making a new thread to ask something that's already been explained however...

I think the fact the demo was already being discussed in this thread by various members is pretty essential to it being merged as well. But hey, what the hell would I know.
Also, we had the one thread for 2k7 and I've never heard any complaints or had any problems personally with it. I actually find it easier having all the talk in the one area so I know if I am looking for something it will only be in one place. Makes more sense to me.

By the sounds of it though, the demo does sound impressive. Might have to get my hands on it soon.
The demo is nice. . .I been playin it this morning. all I can say it's gonna kill live in the gameplay department again. Once Live smoothens out that gameplay and make players feel realistic, 2k will own them. Live Graphics and presentation still owns, but gameplay is where it's at for 2k

I agree, this is the first time I have ever played a 2K basketball game and I definitely prefer the gameplay over live. The animations look a lot more realistic than live's, the only thing thats not as good are the graphics....but its not as if they are so bad that it's unplayable. lol

i agree 2k has better gameplay
live has better pesentation and graphics
the only thing i dont like about 2k is
the control sometimes its hard to dribble
and wuts up with the nfl 2k music intro
in the starting lineups

the more i play 2k the more i like live. its too easy to get inside with guys like LB and parker and its really easy to score or dunk with them too. It's either a score or a foul 80% of the time and that's not realistic.
the plays they run is pretty great and the animations are smooth, but i like live better at this point and after some smoothening up it will be better.

Yeah, I hate the way Larry Brown just drives on Duncan each time.

Not sure why you'd say that. Just looking at the gameplay videos of both Live 08 and 2K8, the players are robotic in Live. Look at the passing animations for instance. Pass. Catch. Pause. Pass. Catch. Pause. Not to mention, some of the passing actually floats slowly. Assuming nothing has changed, in Live 07, it takes a decade to swing the ball around the perimeter. I bet that's EA's method of slowing down gameplay for "realistic" scores.
Edit: Take a look at 3:35 at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA6foo2r2ss You'll never ever see that kind of well-executed play in Live.

Looks like this thread may need to be split and then merged with the discussion of when to split and merge threads.

There are a plenty of animations that aren't great in Live; same in 2K. A lot of the passing in Live 08 is fine if one of the players is moving - if they're both standing still it tends to look strange, but then again it doesn't affect your ability to score because you're not moving toward the hoop anyway.
I'm just saying 2K's controls are really terrible. Having to shake around the left stick making your player jerk around randomly just to do a crossover or behind the back is bad design. They also haven't learned from Live 04 in that the pro-hop/drop-step is largely unstoppable. Additionally, 2k7, for all the praise it received, did not contain layups off the backboard (at least for 360) which was totally baffling to me (I think it's fixed in 2k8, but you know there's a large fanboy population when nobody cares about something like this).
My main beef with 2K has always been that controlling a player doesn't feel as tight as Live. If you push a certain direction while holding the "aggressive modifier" (<- What the hell is this - just call it turbo) you'll perform an angled drive to the hoop instead of getting to that spot as quickly as possible.
I just don't find it in any way intuitive. In order to perform a post move in 2k8 you need to hold down the left trigger to back the defender down, then hold the right trigger as well while throwing the stick one direction or another. In Live you simply hold down the left trigger and flick the right analog stick in the direction you want to go, which is intuitive because all the dribbling moves are mapped to it anyway.
Did I mention the left bumper does absolutely nothing in the 2k8 demo?
So anyway, I think I'm going to end up buying Live.

yeah i thought about the juke moves while playing 2k7 today and i thought to myself... it's really silly to hold both triggers down, and waggle the stick left and right and it does random juke moves and hopefully you wont get one of those dreaded animations that they dribble backwards. a lot of people complain about Live's robotic animations of pass catch dribble, but it's better than 2k7 where you're always at risk of running out of bounds right before catching the ball on a pass.

I actually prefer 2K's control scheme but to each his own. BTW the left bumper was deactivated for the demo for some reason, its supposed to allow you to set picks and allow offball control.

When does the demo come out on the PS3?
Fri Sep 21, 2007 5:45 pm
In 2k8, it will give you the ability to change the controls and have the right stick strictly for dribble moves and still move with the left stick, etc.
And the PS3 demo hits PSN probably middle of next week.

I's not really hard to dribble. . when ever you move to the side your player automatically crosses over. and you want to spin you press the "y" button on the 360. I don't mind either game's control. I played 2k8 then Live 08 and noticed Live's game is much faster. is 2k8 runnin in 60fps? anyone know

Not sure what fps it's running at, but I read that for 2K8, the game speed was toned down for, in their words, realism. If it's not choppy, then 2K8 should be running at about 60 fps.

Maybe that's the reason cause when I played 2k7 I had to speed up the game!!

Yes like live
And the shot stick can also be performed by holding down the LT (left trigger) button and then shooting with the right stick.
Also, the game will run in 60fps on both PS3 and X360. Also I heard it might run 60fps online as well (2k7 only ran 30fps online)
