I stand corrected. That must have been a pain for Madden players who installed the problematic update.

Well , with the release of IV next month I might get a 360 to join in the rest of the 21st century but I'm concerned about the red ring error that has been known to plague 360's. Is this still a problem , does it occur very often? :|

Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:08 am

Ever since I bought the "new" version of the 360 that comes with an HDMI port, I haven't had any ring problem. I have had 2k8 freeze my system in the same place twice, so I can tell it's more than likely in issue with the game itself and not the console.

I never had a problem with my first one either until it dropped 2 feet and landed on the AV cable. That broke something inside the motherboard. To be safe, just make sure the 360 you get has an hdmi port.

Good choice. (Y) If nothing else, the Xbox 360 version will have exclusive content that won't be available for the PS3.

Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:48 am

Not necessarily as any PS3 fanboy would tell you. The 360 gets the content exclusively as a download. PS3 could get it on a disc and it wouldn't be a download.

Despite Pdub, and everyone else on the internets claims, the newest 360s don't "fix the problem" as you see, there "never was one" to begin with. The RROD just happened to affect everyone with a 360 of certain processing dates, and Microsoft just happened to offer a return program for everyone. There was never a "problem" with them, all just internet rumos.

Wed Mar 05, 2008 5:00 pm

I've never had the RROD and haven't even had my 360 freeze on me yet, and it's like almost 2 years old so it defiantly wont happen to everyone, I think their is more good cases than bad put it that way.

Same here, got mine in August 2 summers ago. The only issues I have are the internal fans dont work (using a Nyko Intercooler) and sometimes if the disc in the 360 doesnt get used enough (ie playing too many DLC songs in a row in Rock Band) I sometimes get a disc read error. Other than that it has been smooth sailing.

Is that going to be the case though? I was under the impression some extras would be released (as downloadable content) exclusively for the 360 version.

i heard that microsoft paid out the ass for the exclusive content

Fri Mar 07, 2008 8:29 am

That's what I heard too, which suits me fine.

Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:51 am

not me, i bought the ps3 even after hearing about the exclusive got xbox lol.

At the time I got my 360, PS3s were still up around $999 here in Australia which helped make the choice a little easier.

i see lol, the xbox is still cheaper here but i admit to being a ps fan and it was only 500 for the 80gig with free game so i got that one

I was a big fan of the PS2 (I still have mine, in fact) but the price tag turned me away from the PS3. I also wanted to pick up NBA Live 07 Next Gen so I could check it out firsthand in preparation for the Community Day last year and obviously that wasn't an option on the PS3.

Sat Mar 08, 2008 4:36 pm

I had a PS2 and was bound to buy a PS3. But before doing so, i compared it to xbox 360. Despite its break downs, i bought a 360 instead, and i couldnt be happier. I still am likely to buy a ps3 down the road, when it gets some games im interested in, which will probably be when God of War 3 comes out.

So, this may have been discussed or be obvious in some other fashion, but I've gotta ask anyway. My 360 is loud when playing from a disc. Be it a game, DVD, or music CD. The actual sound of the spinning is just noticeably loud. It doesn't sound *wrong* (there's no weird clicking, popping, or anything), it's just the actual whir of the drive that's so loud.

Am I alone, or is this normal? It was that way right out of the box.

Thanks!

Sun Mar 09, 2008 11:07 am

I haven't noticed that myself. It whirrs a little louder when a disc is first put in but after that everything sounds "normal".

Sun Mar 09, 2008 4:18 pm

Depends on the kind of disc drive you have. When i bought mine it was loud, then it stopped reading discs so i had to send it away, and they put in a new disc drive. This one was different brand, it wasnt as loud as before. There are 3 different kinds of disc drives in 360s.

Looks like my 360 is dead. Not by the red rings, but the red ring. The lower-right quadrant is usually a result of the HDMI cable being improperly inserted. However, when I was playing Live 08, suddenly, the screen got all fucked up and static-y. I replugged the cable, and all the Microsoft steps, but nothing.

Sadly, this isn't covered by the warranty, so I'll have to shell out $90 for repairs... That PS3 sounds pretty awesome right now.

Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:57 am

Just read that Duke Nukem 3D is coming to Xbox Live. I'll be tempted to get it when it does for a bit of retro gaming.
