Black Light Burns - Cruel Melody

Uuhhh , so I haven't done this in a while...

Well anyway, Black Light Burns is Wes Borland's band for those of you who don't know (no, I do not enjoy Limp Bizkit's music), and I thought it was a pretty decent effort on his part. A lot of people would probably get the imrpession that he'd be starting up a new Nu metal band or something, but I was pleasantly suprised to see very little Limp Bizkit-esque material in there (it's more of a heavy metal/electronic/industrial/whatever-the-fuck-its-called-nowadays mold). I'm not a huge industrial music fan (in fact, I kind of hate most of the other genres of music that are usually closely interelated with it), but I thought it was a decent album to listen to the one or two plays through. Most songs are solid, but none really stand out to me on my first couple of listens. You can really tell that Wes is kind of uncomfortable singing vocals on some of the songs, but I think he can pull it off if he works on it.

Overall, I think that it's a solid album that I recommend, although there's not really much mind blowing material on it.

New high pitched voice? He's been using the high pitch voice forever. I think you are referring to the accent he uses and the embellishment he uses to convey another person speaking during his rhyme.

voice, accent doesnt matter, shit is annoying in both ways, while the wordplay and rhymes are awesome....as a huge eminem fan, i just cant get over it!

dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion

Not really the same band as a few years back, but still a good record that grows on you each time you listen to it.

Well, I can't really be objective about dredg, the various symbols that they've been using along the years are tattooed all over my arms, so I may have a slight bias...Still, objective enough to admit that it's certainly not on the same level they used to be 6-8 years ago.

I haven't. Thanks. I haven't kept up with any music at all in years. No radio, no TV, nothing. Just the same old third-wave ska, soul/blues, and classical that is always spinning for me. I dig this, though. And I'll check out The Dear Hunter.

Wonderland isn't bad and has some good tracks. But yeah, Razia's Shadow is like at a whole other level. The guests pretty much all knock it out of the park.

Highly theatrical prog rock, a very talented bunch. It's better to listen to the first two acts beforehand in order to get a better grasp of the whole concept (the band's very existence is to tell a story in 6 acts).

The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life And Death

I wasn't aware Act III had already been released, thanks for the heads up. I loved Act I and II, though Dear Ms. Leading is still my favorite of theirs, I guess I like its rawness.

I've never been much of an indie rock fan, but I borrowed this album from a friend a few weeks ago and just instantly loved it. The first four songs are particularly good, imo.

K'naan is one of my favorites these days. Though I liked The Dusty Foot Philosopher better Troubadour still is one of the best albums of '09 so far.

Anyone checked K-Os' Yes! yet? I gave it a first listen a couple of days ago and so far I really like it.

Deerhunter - Microcastle
Saw these guys live today and they were phenomenal. Far better than The Dear Hunter. TheMC5 (whatever happened to him? He was cool) posted their last album back when this thread was first starting out. For people who like shoegaze or really good indie music, check this out. While the album's a grower, tracks like Never Stops and Nothing Ever Happened are immediately great.

Poison The Well - The Tropic Rot
They keep distancing themselves from the sterile post-hardcore/metalcore scene, and that's for the best. Less spaghetti western-infused songs in this one, but still very experimental, avant-gardiste, and as heartfelt as real hardcore can get. True artists not afraid of redefining themselves.


He Is Legend - It Hates You
Each of their album has been completely different. Like the band above, they've probably alienated quite a large part of their fanbase, but at least they don't dwell in making cheap music that can be heard from 30,000 other bands. This album retains some of their Southern metal style from their previous one, but it's both more accessible and more challenging at the same time, which is complicated to do. Those familiar with their earlier releases will certainly listen to it with a blank stare at first, like I did, but it's a whole new album when you listen to it a second time and start understanding their motive for making this.

Interesting, I've never been able to get fully into Poison The Well. I have tried, I even downloaded their discography but it always sounds like something it missing to me.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium

I'm a big Mars Volta fan, and their first album is probably their best (altho by a small margin). When i heard it (2003ish), it was absolutely refreshing. Was the most interesting modern rock i'd ever heard. Finally something that was different, but within a style i was familiar with. Their other albums are special in their own rights too, but their most commercial sounding is also probably their best. If you like progressive/psychedelic rock mixed with punk rock, then you'll like these guys.

Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

Probably my favourite album ever. It was released in 1995ish so it's getting old now, but for me their dynamic style is a huge influence. If you like new Incubus then you probably wont like this. It's nothing alike. If you like hard rock from the 90s that is creative and intricate then you'll like this.

Battles - Mirrored

Like De-Loused, when i first heard this (last year), i was refreshed. This is one of the most creative bands i've ever heard. Their songs are just craziness. It's a style of rock like i've never heard. Some have called it math-core. Funk-math. Progressive rock. I dunno what the hell it is, but it doesn't matter. It's creative, it's imaginative, and most important of all, it's different from anything else you've ever heard. The down part is that there's barely any vocals. It's mostly all instrumental. But it doesn't matter anyway because the music has so many layers to it because they all use loop pedals.

Arctic Monkeys - Humbug

Its a shame that this album is getting about 10% lower scores for this album than the last two, since its far better than them. I always thought the Arctic Monkeys were overrated in their "heyday" (two years ago), but enjoyed their music for what it was. "Humbug" is a departure from the first two albums' Britpop roots, having . It reveals the band as true musicians and Alex Turner as one of the best songwriters out there. Unlike the first two albums, which were quite hit-and-miss and somehow already sound dated, all the songs on Humbug are solid. Highlights include the single "Crying Lightning", the best song on the album: "Cornerstone" and "Dance Little Liar".
