English roundup
LONDON (AP) -- John O'Shea scored in injury time to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory at Liverpool on Saturday and stay nine points ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League.
Chelsea later won 2-0 at Portsmouth, but is running out of time to win a third straight league title.
With United down to 10 men after the expulsion of Paul Scholes, Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina failed to hold Cristiano Ronaldo's powerfully hit free kick and O'Shea drove the rebound into the roof of the net.
Scholes was sent off in the 85th minute after lashing out at Xabi Alonso for the Red Devils' first red card of the season.
"Liverpool will feel very unlucky and they deserve to," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "It was a fantastic result. We had a lot of narrow escapes and Liverpool upset our rhythm.
"It is a massive result for us. We broke away late on against Fulham and scored and now we've done it here. We've had that bit of luck in the last two weeks but you need luck if you are to win titles."
At Fratton Park, Didier Drogba scored his 29th league and cup goal of the season in the 33rd minute and Salomon Kalou added a second in the 82nd.
United has 72 points from 29 games and Chelsea has 63 from 28. The Blues still have to host United.
"Are they lucky?" asked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho of United. "Yes. They win in the last minute and they have no injuries, so the gods are with them. But we have to be honest and fair with them and give them what they deserve, which is big respect to the manager and the players.
"Our job is to keep winning matches and get back to six points (deficit) and have the pressure on them. We have to win all our matches and wait for them to drop some points."
Arsenal shrugged off its run of three losses by edging Reading 2-1 at home to move within a point of third-place Liverpool.
Also Saturday, it was: Fulham 1, Aston Villa 1; Manchester City 0, Wigan 1; Newcastle 0, Middlesbrough 0; Sheffield United 1, Everton 1; Watford 2, Charlton 2.
Despite upcoming vital Champions League games, both Liverpool and United fielded full-strength lineups with winger Ryan Giggs making his 700th appearance for the Red Devils.
In the 27th minute, John Arne Riise's low shot flew just wide of the far post after a free kick. Liverpool should have gone ahead in the 32nd when Craig Bellamy got past Nemanja Vidic, but his cross couldn't find the unmarked Dirk Kuyt in front of goal.
United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar had to dive full-length to push a low shot from Bellamy round the post in the 47th as Liverpool continued to create chances in the second half. Two minutes later, Bellamy had the ball in United's net -- only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
Wayne Rooney went off the field with blood oozing from a cut on his right thigh after a challenge by Jamie Carragher. But the striker should be available for Wednesday's Champions League game against Lille with United leading 1-0 from the first leg. Liverpool hosts Barcelona on Tuesday, leading 2-1.
After Scholes had been sent off, Liverpool had another chance to win the game with three minutes to go. Substitute striker Peter Crouch controlled a cross and shot from six meters (yards), only for Van der Sar to block the ball by diving to his left.
It was the first time the two northern powerhouses had met since they both became owned by American businessmen.
Malcolm Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL team, and his sons control United. Tom Hicks, owner of the Dallas Stars NHL ice hockey team and the Texas Rangers MLB baseball club and George Gillett Jr., owner of the Montreal Canadiens NHL ice hockey team, recently bought Liverpool.
Arsenal's Gilberto Silva scored from the penalty spot after 51 minutes and Julio Baptista added a second in the 62nd. An own goal by Cesc Fabregas handed the Royals a reply three minutes from the end at the Emirates Stadium.
West Ham, which hosts Tottenham on Sunday, slipped to last place on goal difference as Watford held 18th-place Charlton 2-2. The Hornets lost a two-goal after Hameur Bouazza and Damien Francis had scored in the first 21 minutes at Vicarage Road. Luke Young replied in the 67th and Darren Ambrose made it 2-2 with a header a minute from the end.
West Ham and Watford have 20 points and Charlton 24. Wigan jumped two places to 15th by winning 1-0 at Manchester City through Caleb Folan's 18th-minute goal that dropped City to 17th place, six points above the relegation zone.
Rob Hulse gave Sheffield United a 52nd-minute lead only for Mikel Arteta to level for Everton from the penalty spot in the 75th.
Fulham and Villa also finished level at Craven Cottage, John Carew giving the visitor a 21st-minute lead but Carlos Bocanegra replying for the Cottagers two minutes later.
