Because it was sweet from the sugar she put in it.

Correct! Let me dig up another one:

Two convicts are locked in a cell. There is an unbarred window high up in the cell. No matter if they stand on the bed or one on top of the other they can't reach the window to escape. They then decide to tunnel out. However, they give up with the tunneling because it will take too long. Finally one of the convicts figures out how to escape from the cell. What is his plan?

Oh I know this, I think...

They already started digging the tunnel meaning they already have a pile of dirt. So they decide to keep digging to create a HUGE pile of dirt, and then they use the pile to clime up to the window and escape.

Lol yeah, that is so random and specific that surely nobody would get that on their first go.

Good. That was a relatively easy one, eh?

If people want to google the answers, fine by me. I don't see the point, though. Better stretch your brain than prove the wisest one in an NBA forum, no?

Now, on with the riddle-saga:

If you have two hourglasses -- one four-minute timer and one seven-minute timer, how can you measure nine minutes?

Sun Feb 19, 2006 6:50 pm

turn the 4 and 7 over at once
when the 4 is done, turn them both over again
then do it again
and again

:?

Sun Feb 19, 2006 7:22 pm

when the 4 is done, turn them both over again
then do it again
and again

explain it better, analytically, please. I'm not going to calculate this myself.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:29 am

Turn the seven over first. When it is done, turn over the 4 and wait for it to get to half way.

I have read the sugar one before, so there.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 4:35 am

You cannot measure EXACTLY 9 minutes by ESTIMATING when the hourglass is half way.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 4:49 am

Flip them both at the same time.
After 4 min, flip both again.
The 7 will have 3 min left, so when it's up, flip both again.
The 4 still has 1 min left, so flip both when it's done and the 7 will have 6 min left. Flip it.
If you measure the time from the 7, you have 3 + 6, or 9; but you have to ignore the time taken for the 4 to run out ... :?

Does it have to be 9 min straight?

Does it have to be 9 min straight?

Yes.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:25 am

:? I think I know how to do it, but I don't feel like getting the answer right now, my head is spinning.

You don't start counting right away, you wait and start counting after you've flipped them a bunch of times. Am I right?

Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:29 am

No. The first thing you do is flip them both at once.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:31 am

:x Damn.

Mon Feb 20, 2006 2:42 pm

Start with turning them both over at once.
when the 4 runs out, turn it over, and when the 7 runs out, turn it over.
once the 2nd 4 has run out (eight minutes are done here) the 7 minute has been going for 1 minute.
turn the 7 back over, and when its done, you have 9 minutes (Y)

either that, or get a stopwatch, its 2006!!!

When you start answering your own riddles, it may be a sign that the thread is in decadence. :P
