I'm sure you'll fully explain how the decreasing of outstanding debt caused the Panic of 1837. You'll probably try to connect the 1920s decrease to the Great Depression as well. But then you'll run into problems when you have the current economic malaise in combination with the doubling of debt over the decade, or say the tripling of the debt during the 1970s in relation to that economic malaise.
But I'm sure you're really just throwing crap around the room thinking it means something.
