Re: Video Card Issue?

I had a fairly similar issue with a 6600GT years ago, it turns out the card had somehow overheated like crazy and the fan had actually melted. Anyway, from the temperatures you mentioned, that's obviously what the problem is, regardless of the cause. It's pretty cheap to find something superior to those 8800s these days.

so ive been gone for about 5 hours? and my cards are at

Primary: 64 & 56.5

Secondary: 61 & 53

that is with a room temperature of 65F (left the fan on & window open)

If those temperature readings are in Celsius and the PC was basically idle, you've got serious heat issues. 65 Fahrenheit (18 Celsius) is already considered 'cold' surrounding. Your card shouldn't even top or reach 40 Celsius with that surrounding temperature considering you left the fan on. :|

Yeah, it's C, GPU-Z gives C by default.

Actually, for an 8800GT 40-50 is fine, that's not a bad idle number of many modern cards. I have five case fans, an open front, pinned cables for airflow and recently vacuumed (which totally did save 5-9 degrees) and the lowest I can get the card is down to about 40 in a 20-21 room. I could jack the case fans to high, and the card fan to max but I doubt I get huge savings from it, since my case sides are already cold to the touch.

My case for reference since ZanShadow mentioned Antec, although it is an older model, it's 98% the same except they moved the drive fan to a better location and minor tweaks. (The old location actually is fine for airflow, as my hard drives are really cold from it, but it's hard to route the SATA cords by. They'd probably be frigid with the new location.) Plus I got it when they had a bad fan batch but couldn't tell which batch it was, so they just packed extra fans in with every case. And mine were all fine so I got bonus fans, and of course used them. (And it's the best case like ever and I will use it until they change standards enough.) (One more note, I leave the door open because I'm paranoid and also like access to my optical drives, but closing the door has only ever seemed to add a degree or two after an extended period that I could tell when I tried it. I'm sure they added vents to it for a good reason though, mine is flat like the rest of the door.)

Not to take away the temp issues JaoSming's got, but I do come back to that side-fan and back-fan. Even though they're large and people were really hardcore pushing that design for a while (it was a religion!), I had a case in that design and the thing always ran hot no matter what. The only way to get decent temps was to disconnect the side fan, pull off the side of the case and blow a floor fan in which made the back fan useless but at least actually flowed air through. The motherboard of that computer burned up and became useless within three years especially because neither the north nor southbridge had a fan on them except the one in the side of the case. Which again is shitty airflow. It's basically a fan blowing on one part of the board and another fan hoping to suck out hot air. Whereas the other method pulls in a bunch of cool air (even in 90F heat) and the back fan/fans drag it through and out. (And if properly placed, like in that Antec case, across the hottest areas. The moving of the power supply is just a bonus.) Even with that shitty design and my old 6600GT idling in the high 50s it's still a good card if I ever need it, real problem on the 8800GT's is that design flaw they have. Early Wii's have the same issue, overheating kills them a lot faster than it should.

I have no idea how that side-fan, back-fan crap started, where's Paul23 to figure out a way to stop corporations from being stupid about case design.

Just for comparison, I have a 77F room right now, and the 8800GT I have is "ilding" in C (with Google Chrome) at 46/38 with the PCB at only 32. Fan is only 35% too.

I also have benji’s Antec P-183 as well as this one, 900. They both are great cases. If you don’t mind the box-look and huge ass size, P-183 is recommendable as it has more rooms to work with(but bit more pricy). The downside of 900 is its lack of cable management space. Otherwise, it’s one heck of a case with freakish look, especially when it is coupled with some cool looking components. Also, don’t be fooled by the price on the site as the local shops usually carry them at much lower price when on promotion. However, note that these cases aren’t very quite in ears as they’re to be with many fans with holes to flow air.

Lolz. That actually is what I did with the computer purchased from the Best Buy(Acer). Thought I got a good deal since it seemed cheap at that moment, but when I added the video card(8800GT) and the new power supply unit, I lost all interests and love on that computer. Soon after, I ended up selling the whole system parts by parts.

That's if Paul23's ever seen anything outside of her wooden PC.

ok, so the old primary card is shot, im probably going to upgrade soonish, this is just giving me an excuse to.

now i had to manually edit my TV's EDID to disable the HDMI audio so I can use the TV's analog HDMI inputs for the computer. It works with the "old" 8800GT but using the "new" 8800GT the setttings are still there, but I can't disable the audio

thats the tutorial I did back in June and my modified values are all i can find...but it doesnt work....you guys know anything about this?

I lol'ed at that. Made no sense to me when I saw it. The air basically enters and leaves the case without even providing proper air flow to important parts that should be cooled.

Your P183 is loud? Mine is one of the quietest computers I've heard. Even with the five fans it's basically a whisper compared to my last two cases.

If the side fan is big enough, it should work fine.

Unless the exhaust fan lets out air faster than the intake.

Not really, but compared to PCs with minimal fans, I'd say a little more. However P-183 is rather on the quite side comparably to 900 or some other gaming cases as it seems to have a front cover which can reduce the noise of the front fans and such noise from inside.

Re: Video Card Issue?

In my case I have one exhaust on the back, one in the top, one intake in the front, and a large side fan. So air coming in from two directions, air going out two directions. Works pretty well. I don't count thepower supply fan.

No fair, your design is different with the addition of an exhaust on top (which is really good) and intake on the front. :(

so i cleaned the computer out and now I got temps of 57/58.

No dust on or near the cards though.....

I did unplug the SLI cord and was trying to unpower the dead card without taking it out (i dont have anywhere to store it) and my computer made a mean beep noise at me when I tried that (when i plugged it in again)
