Oznogrd, what made you want to learn ASL?

Honestly? an easy A in college.

On top of the fact i work with people with disabilities alot and deaf people are included in that. I could always write or have em read lips and stuff but i always felt like a douche for expecting that. So I took the class to learn enough to get by in a basic convo. Awesome class though: our T.A held "study sessions" at the bars 1 time a week. Was fantastic to get drunk and sign. Didnt have to yell over loud music, could communicate from across the bar, and watching the deaf guys get so drunk they drunk dialed...Good times.

Not in English speaking countries (or at least in Australia, at any rate). You might learn a bit of French or another language in first year of high school and a variety of languages are available as elective subjects through high school if you want to pursue it.

in my part of the US we were required to take a language for 2 classes and we were offered spanish, french, or latin.
Opinions are my own.

In France, you would learn English around 10 yo (that was 15-20 years ago, I think it's even earlier than that now), and then you're supposed to learn at least another foreign language a couple of years later.
We should be really good then, but we actually suck big time compared to Germans and people from the Northern Europe, who tend to speak English pretty fluently from my experience.

Only English. I was forced to learn french and japanese, while I was good at studies, I found it boring after about year 9, and forced the person in charge of my subjects to let me do multimedia instead.

A good move.

English and Cantonese. At home, I speak in a mix of both. Half of my sentence will be in English while another half will be in Cantonese  . I learned French during elementary school and for a semester in high school as it's required but I remember very little of it. I can say a few things here and there but can't make a conversation.

English (my own)
Spanish (veryyy sketchy)

I probably should have taken more foreign language though. Even now, trying to transfer in college, most legit school's like for you to have at least 2 years. I had my last one like junior year of high school, then the years and years they make you do before that.

My sister has been to france in the past few years and she said there the majority of people were fluent and tried to speak to her in english. She'd then tell them in french that she was there to learn and to not talk to her in english. So yeah...America sucks on teaching languages: only reason i know enough spanish to get by was 4 years worth of it (had a great teacher my first year and got hooked). Options were French, Spanish, German, and Latin was listed but never offered because not enough people would sign up for it. My school required 2 years but if you took the "regular" and not the "advanced" spanish you didnt learn shit but a bunch of useless vocabulary.

Really? Cuz after coming here and meeting a lot of foreign students from various countries, I'm really kind of ashamed of us not being more fluent or having less of an accent at least compared to peeps from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany,...I still have an accent that I can't get rid of.
America sucks on teaching languages

Very true, I did see firsthand how bad the foreign language teachers and professors are in the US. In high school, you can pretty much become a teacher after having spent a summer in a different country... :?

When I was in France the large majority of people I came across didn't speak English and had no interest in trying. This was in the south though, not anywhere heavily populated.

American.

There's another language that matters?

Oh, I can read Canadian (when someone not from there writes it down since, you know, they haven't learned about the written word yet...not that it'd matter since they're all illiterate), but can't understand their gibberish language when it's spoken.
I know some Aussie phrases ("g'day mate", "that's a regular wallaby!", "shrimp on the barby!", "bloomin' onion", "maybe the dingo ate your baby", "that's not a knife...") and a lot of British and Irish ones too.

German, poorly.

So nobody even noticed the joke? Or is it just so common in your place, that people know how to speak elven?
Damn I suck at making jokes. I even have to point them out...

By the way, I actually know a dude at my school who says he can read elven  I saw him once sitting in the commonplace reading some elven poems from LotR  (Mind you, this is high-school I'm talking about)

Well I speak German and English, no French since I decided to learn Latin in school which is basically not a real language. Will have to learn another language at university next year. Right now I am tending to take Spanish.
