I've had the most fun with Live 2000, Super Mario 3, Quake, Medieval: Total War, Civ III and Medal of Honour. If I went back and played those games now, I'm not sure if it would be as fun as the newer ones. I can't say that I experienced the same level as fun as with the newer games, though. Quake III wasn't fun at all. Civ IV and Medieval II: Total War, while was fun, didn't give the same longetivity as the predecessors, probably because I've already "experienced" it.
I guess it all depends on interests and experience to determine how fun a game is rather than graphically advanced and complex they've become.

And Shenmue is hardly overlooked.

i heard Yakuza 2 was being translated to English and was going to be released in N.A. in 2006 or 2007.

You have a 360 so I recommend crackdown (available for dirt cheap), gears of war (the original, but the second is coming up soon), The orange box (especially if you haven't played half life 2 before as it comes with that and 4 other games) and rainbow 6 vegas
You can get any of those games for around $30 here if you goto the right places.

Thanks, I'll have to download some demos and I'll look through the EB sale/second hand tables next time I'm near one.

Try Dick Smith's as well, they had a huge sale on recently (I picked up Simpsons game for $15 for ps3), they had Crackdown for $12.50, Orange Box for $25 amongst other bargains.

Wouldn't have thought of them, thanks. How's JB Hi-Fi when it comes to cheap games?

They're good for new release games. Fable 2, Fallout 3, Farcry 2 are all $79 on release. But their older games, like Crackdown, Deadrising etc are all overpriced and are around the $40 mark.

Yeah, their prices aren't too competitive.

EB price matches, plus you get 7 day return policy, so that's why I usually go them....plus my mate manages a store....

See, you get the "insider discount" unlike them regular customers.

Does he give you the equivalent of a staff discount or anything?

more or less....not crazy discounts or anything....more increasing trade-in values, & discounts on games, accessories etc....although when Aussie dollar was strong against US, I mainly just imported....now that it is weak as, I'll just buy locally....

Not a bad deal, it certainly pays to have connections.

That's my one regret about going with an Xbox 360, not being able to import games because it isn't region free. I'd love to give the college basketball games a shot.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you briefly mentioned nostalgia, Andrew (well, for me anyway.) Nothing beats booting up Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario Kart every few years and getting right into it again. I guess everyone has their own little nostalgic tick.
I do have a 360 and play occasionally but nothing really blows me away. I have not felt the need to pick up a FPS in years, i think i grew tired of them sometime during the cube's years. I just tend to pick up a few sporting games, also got GTAIV.
The only game i'd say i have really enjoyed every moment of and fully cherished over the last few years would of been Galaxy. Was the total throwback to fans of the series, playing every minute of that had me oozing nostalgic goodness.

That's another interesting aspect of old vs new games, that new games that are throwbacks to the games of yesterday strike a chord with fans and are still enthusiastically accepted and played despite their similarities to "outdated" games. I guess the nostalgia comes into play to a certain extent because it brings back fond memories of its predecessor but it's still a new game so you don't have the complete nostalgic feeling of pulling out an old favourite from ten, fifteen (or more) years ago.
For me, that game is Sid Meier's Pirates. I loved the original and the "Gold" remake and was excited to hear they were planning a remake in 2004. I bought the remake and was very pleased to find that save for a few changes here and there - most of which I'd call improvements - it brought back all the old elements that made the original so much fun. I understand that it sold pretty well too, suggesting that a concept devised in the late 80s still survives today even with all the evolution that the gaming industry has undergone, even finding a new audience.

Alot of games are region free on xbox. It comes down to the publisher whether the games are region free or not.
