The reliable cars based on my research would be Toyota (or Lexus), Honda (or Acura), or Volvo. Other cars that seem to be good are Nissan (or Infiniti), Mazda, and some luxury cars like BMW and Mercedes. Plus, they always have a higher resale value, so it doesn't depreciate too much over time.
We just bought an Acura, and it should last us a long time. Sorry to hear about your Taurus, but hopefully it won't cause you any more problems. Same deal with my dad's Chrylser Intrepid. The transmission literally got crushed in itself, and he had to pay over $5000 to repair it. It was bad.
Jetta's are pretty good too.
We used to have a Chrysler Spirit back in the day, transmission blew on that on a road trip to Nova Scotia. I'll tell you, it's some experience trying to buy a car off somebody in Quebec

I love my Ford Ranger, besides the fact that it's only a single cab and doesn't have four wheel drive. However, it's a 1996 and has about 85,000 on it right now. It's been running pretty good for me over the past two years or so. I got it when it had 68,000 on it and I've taken good care of it.
"I'm a Ford truck man!"
I'm really digging the new Nissan Titans and Toyota Tundras though...

Please I hope you didn't say that. None of those lame things. If you're going to get a truck, please don't go anywhere but America.

I've always thought that as well. But have you seen the new trucks by Toyota and Nissan? Those are some nice, heavy duty trucks. They have made some great strides since the 90s.

Yeah, they're really pushing the Toyota Trucks quite a bit lately in the ads. Other than the Yaris.

Tundra is a great truck. My Uncle has one and man is that thing great in the winter. Gets you through anything, amazing heater (and AC), and holds up to everything he puts it through (he works in construction so it holds a hell of a lot in the back all the time as well as taking it off road from time to time)

Tundra's a pretty sick truck. Tacomas are the girliest trucks known to man.

I have a Ford Truck so I did buy American. However, the new Titans and Tundras are looking like very good trucks. If you want to be a true American, you'll buy the best product you can get for the best price. That is the capitalist way. Ford and the other American brands are having a hard time keeping up with the foreign car companies. It's a fact, but it really doesn't concern me at this point because it will be a long time before I come close to buying a rather new model vehicle. My 1996 Ranger will hopefully hold up for another 3 years or so I'm hoping.

Honda Ridgelines are lame, Nissan Titans are stupid, and Tundra's are OK.... but I'd still take an f250 or f350 any day. None of those three trucks can compete with the power for an f250 or f350.

The lesson of the day: Don't listen to your mum when it comes to cars!!!
sorry to hear about your car troubles....I think anyone who has driven for long enough has had problems with alternators....but your story is just one of a lemon I guess
