Santana undefeated?

Woah. And finally in the lead for NL Central!

Thu Aug 09, 2007 10:10 am

Finally. Those Cards are really pesky. Now I have to try to hold on to the lead.

Week 12

Game 70-75
Three game set with the D-Backs and three at Texas. I should've played the last game with Arizona, because I almost own Big Unit.

Game 75 Intro
Towers against John Thompson. Towers is almost the opposite of Santana; he is winless unless I play him.

Game Recap
Top of the third, Romano gets things going with a RBI single. Wells then gets jammed and hits a blooper into right field (they were shading him to left) that scores Romano. 2-0 Astros.

Astros get right back at it in the fourth. Kapler with a RBI base hit, Lugo a 2 RBI triple, and Romano's RBI single makes it 6-0 Astros.

In the seventh, Wells hits a triple and scores on the same play when Michael Young drops while cutting-off the throw. The game ruled it an error and inside-the-park homer. How ironic. :? 7-0 Astros.

The Astros tack on another run in the ninth and the Rangers get two in the bottom of the ninth. 8-2 Astros.

Grades
Pitching: A-
If not for Horacio, it would be a combined shutout.

Batting: A
Great. Better than great. 8 runs on 16 hits, you don't get that everyday.

Hehe, A-Rod.

He once injured a shoulder while diving for a foul ball when I was playing MVP 2005 :P

Well, tied now. need another streak.

Plus the real-life Astros have a slimmer of a chance again...providing we beat the Brewers and then the Brewers and Cubs choke up.

Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:19 am

What's up with the server these days? I've lost my second message in as many tries!

Fine. I'll post it tomorrow.

On the topic of baseball, I think the Cubs and Brewers really do have a chance of choling. With Soriano on the DL and the Brewers having some big losing streaks even before now, the Astros do have an outside chance. But the Cards are still 2 games above them, so that has to be taken care of too.

Fri Aug 10, 2007 4:15 pm

Well, the wildcard for the Astros is out of the question. NL Central is the worst division in baseball currently. And you're right-St. Louis will make a move everytime the Astros do.

I fancy our chances against anyone-just that the team's really inconsistent to be any real threat.

And those damn Bankees are running hot in the AL too.

Sat Aug 11, 2007 6:07 am

Yeah, too many teams going for the wildcard, thanks to the complete turnaround for the NL West. Remember a few years ago the sucked and the Padres could've become the first under .500 division champs? Good days.

I wish we kept Teveras. Jennings sucks. And giving up two more prospects didn't help.

I sure hope the Yankees cool off. The M's have enough trouble keeping up with the Halo'sand holding off Detroit for the wild card.

Week 13
Three games at Arizona and three with Texas at home. I'm a little pressed for time so I'll just do short recaps.

Games 76-81

Game 76 Intro
Too good a pitching matchup not to play: Oswalt against Big-Unit. Away from the confines of Minute Maid, I'm not as good against Johnson.

Short Recap
Both pitchers had solid starts, except one had a better than solid start. Wigginton's sac fly in the second turned out to be all Oswalt needed, but Lane and Teixeira's RBI singles in the fourth andd seventh didn't hurt. Another complete game shutout by Oswalt, like you didn't hear that oftten enough.

Moment of the game

Oswalt watches as Finley swings through his curveball for one of his 8 strikeouts.

Game 80 Short Recap
Towers against Chan Ho Park. Towers left with a 4-0 lead thanks to Kapler's sac fly, Romano's 2 RBI single, and Wells' RBI triple. But the bullpen gave up 3 runs in the seventh, and that made Gagne's job a little harder. He would give up a sac fly to Carl Everett, and blow his first save of the year. The game would go to extras and Wells wins it with a RBI base hit off the left field wall.

Memorable moments (aka more A-Rod funnies)

A-Rod at first. He is going on the pitch. He gets a good jump...the throw comes in from LaRue...Lugo catches it, swipes at A-Rod...and he is OUT! It wasn't even close.
Image

Not A-Rod this time. Teixeira fouls a pitch to the right side...and it's caught by Bagwell! What a great catch!

0-2 on A-Rod, two runners on, one out. The pitch...swing and a miss! He strikes out.

Week 14

Games 82-87
Three at home vs. Brewers and three at PNC.

Game 82 Result

Image

Game 83 Intro
Jennings against Todd Ritchie.

Game Recap
The offense got going early. Wells hits a RBI double in the first (advance on throw), and Mohr drives him in with a sac fly. 2-0 Astros.

In the third, Mohr hits another sac fly and the Astros are up 3-0.

The Brewers make it a little more interesting in the seventh with a 2 RBI single by Smith. 3-2 Astros.

In the eighth, the Astros gives their bullpen some insurance (perhaps a little too much). Wigginton, LaRue, and Teixeira with three consecutive RBI base hits make it 6-2 and takes the save situation away from Gagne.

Grades
Pitching: B+
Pretty good. Jennings got tired and gave up the runs in the seventh, but overall a good effort.

Well, I'm back from my week-long trip to America. Watched the Astros game on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, good to see them win. Still a late season run won't work though, considering both Roy and El Caballo are out for a while.

Well, at least Roy's strolling it with Santana at the top of the CY's ;)

Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:13 am

So, went to LA, huh? I forgot how it was; the last time I went there was like 10 years ago.

Roy's out? How could I not know that? Then again, we don't get much Astros coverage up in Canada.

Oswalt, Santana, Gagne, and Lugo all make the team. What an improvement over last time.

Game Recap
Even I was bored writing this recap...

Whew. My fingers are tired...and so is my "1" button. I thought this game was over by the second inning, but the fat lady didn't sing yet...

The fat lady didn't sing, but the guy on the mound could challenge her for the job. Top of the first, first batter is Guerrero, takes Colon yard for a lead-off home run. Next batter: Larry Walker. He does the same. Bonds struck out (I didn't do it on purpose, I didn't!), but Thome contributes to the homer parade, another solo shot. That would be the end of all the homers in the first, but Pudge adds a RBI double just for good measure. 4-0 NL.

Second inning, Bonds makes up for his mistake. A RBI double extends the lead to 5 and that was it for Colon. Koch comes in. 5-0 NL.

Teams trade a pair of eggs in the third, but suprisingly, it was the AL who got it going in the fourth. After Oswalt pitched a near spotless two innings, Wood took over. And he was far from effective. He gave up RBI base hits to Ordonez, Bagwell, Posada. He got charged for one more as Schilling gave up a RBI base hit to Ichiro to score Bagwell (who was Wood's responsibility). Suddenly we got a game on our hands, 5-4 NL.

Not for long. Koch was going good thanks to his 98 mph heater, but after a few innings, he was down to 93 and lost pinpoint control of it. With two runners on in the fifth, I pinch hit Piazza (90 something power) for Pudge (70 something power). Piazza got a 3-0 count, and he got the green light. Koch gave him a juicy one, right down the middle, and he smacked it out of the yard. Just about done in the fifth. Guardado comes in. With a man on, Vlady got replaced by Pujols (Pujols has a bigger hot zone and more power against lefties). Again, the PH comes through. a two-run shot, 10-4 NL.

In the sixth, Bonds hits a solo, and that was it for Guardado. In comes Sasaki, and Kent greet him with...another home run. Later in the inning, Lugo smacks one into the gap to score two on a double. 14-4 NL.

Seventh inning, Thome's RBI single marks the end of the line for Sasaki. In comes...(drum roll)...Mariano Rivera. Uh oh. Call the guys in, batting pratice is over. Mo comes in, and suddenly, no one could hit a ball square. Too bad I don't have Aubrey Huff on the team. 15-4 NL.

Well, they all say that Rivera can pitch all day, every day. But this is a video game, and he gets tired after a few innings. His fastball lost the jump, and his cutter was starting to get a little flat. Walker takes advantage of it, sends it to away for his second of the game. And Thome just got it over Ichiro glove (as well as the fence) for his second. 17-4 NL. Game over. Finally.

Grades
Pitching: B+
Wood: not good. Everyone else: very good.

I failed my objective of getting 20 runs and 10 homers. j/k

Intro
Towers against Brian Powell. High scoring game, maybe feeling a little confiedent after the All-Star massacre.

Game Recap
Towers was banged up early, giving up four in the first. Alou hit a base hit that got by Wells for a three-bagger, Hill's double got Alou in, and Guillen returned the favor with a RBI double to score Hll. 4-0 Cubs.

In the second, LaRue decided to step up and cut the lead in half with a 2-run homer! 4-2 Cubs.

Chicago extends the lead with another RBI base hit by Guillen. 5-2 Cubs.

In the third, it was Wells with the heroics. A man on, he hits his 27th, it's a one run game. 5-4 Cubs.

Not for long. Towers saves himself from being on the hook for the loss with a RBI single that ties the game at 5.

Astros take the lead with Wells RBI double and Wigginton's RBI single in the fifth. 7-5 Astros.

Lugo adds a RBI single in the sixth. 8-5 Astros.

Cubs pulll within two as Sosa gets a sac fly, but they were unable to score any more.

Grades
Pitching: B-
Towers was shaky in the first, but calmed down later to get himself the win despite giving up 5.

Batting: A

Ahh...trade deadline. Made a few moves. Got a big bat, but had to give up a few guys to get it.

Trade
To (unknown team): Josh Towers
To Houston: Jaret Wright

Nothing too special. Just trying to get rid of a horrible Towers.

Trade
To Tampa Bay: Kyle Farnsworth
To Houston: Travis Harper

Again, getting rid of an uneffective Farnsworth for a guy with a big, bad hook. And Harper has a bit better stamina than Farnsworth.

Trade
To Toronto: Placido Polanco, Dustan Mohr
To Houston: Chris Woodward, Mark Hendrickson

The big one. Gave up a good hitter in Mohr, and a lefty hitting Polanco, but got one of the best hitting shortstop in Woodward and a decent pitcher in Hendrickson.

Trade
To Texas: Ty Wigginton
To Houston: Kevin Mench

I hate to make this trade, but I had to. Woodward is going to send quite a few over the fence, and along with Wigginton, Wells, and a red hot Lugo, it might be a bit "stacked". So I gave up the guy whom I have no space for (Woodward is taking his place at third) to get a replacement for Mohr in left.

End of July
62-46, 2nd in NL Central (0.5 back of Cards)
Image

Fri Aug 24, 2007 4:28 pm

Yeah, I was talking about the real-life Rangers. And they still had enough to go around to win the second game.

But the Astros are officially out. I told a friend that if we won seven or eight in the homestand, there was a chance even if the Cards moved closer to .500. But of course, Gutirrez gives up five in the first. He pitched okay afterwards though.

Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:19 pm

Got a bit sidetracked these last two days...

Turns out the Rangers ran out of juice the next few days against the M's.

Yeah, and Astros are all but out. Cubs getting their act together even without Soriano...oh well.

Week 19-20
Three with the Mets and Expos, both at home. Four at the Cubs and three at the Reds.

Games 112-124

Intro
It's a honour to play against the most recent 300-game winner, even if it is only a video game. Kennedy starts for me in this one, so it's two southpaws going at it.

Game Recap
Glavine got through the first three innings unscathed, but Ensberg (brought up from minors) torched him for a solo blast in the fourth. 1-0 Astros.
Image

Apparently, Ensberg wants to make an impression after being brought up. He did indeed. Another homer off Glavine. This time a two-run shot. 3-0 Astros.

Mo Vaughn puts the Mets on the board in the seventh with a solo shot off Kennedy. 3-1 Astros.

Astros pull away with Mench's 2 RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and add one more in the eighth with Teixeira's RBI single. 6-1 Astros.

Grades
Pitching: A
Certainly not bad. Kennedy a complete game, 4 hit, 9 K performance.

Batting: B+

Game 115 Intro
My first start with Wright. I'm acutally pleaseantly suprised at his stuff; he has a wicked 97 mph fastball, but his breaking pitches...might as well not have them. Javier Vazquez starts for Montreal.

Game Recap
Astros offense get it going in the third, Lugo gets a RBI triple, Romano gets a RBI double, and after Romano advances on Wells' flyout, Woodward picks up a RBI on a sac fly. 3-0 Astros.

Wright adds one with a RBI triple (got past the right fielder) and it's 4-0 Astros.

Expos draw a bit closer in he fifth when Ginter scores on an error by Woodward. 4-1 Astros.

And they come within 2 when Guerrero drives a RBI single to centre. 4-2 Astros.

The lead would be cut down to one with Berkman's solo. 4-3 Astros.

Now my lead is down to one, and even though I trust Gagne, he does give up the occasional run. But Woodward delivers his first home run and it's 5-3 Astros.

Batting: B+
Again, not bad. 6 runs, a couple of homers on mistakes.

Memorable moments

Johnny Mac (that's what the Blue Jay commentators call John MacDonald) makes the highlight reel once again (like he does every day in real life) with a diving catch.

Grades
Pitching: B
Not excatly horrible, but almost losing a four run lead...not good.

Batting: B+
5 runs, a homer, typical in my standards.

Sun Aug 26, 2007 6:35 pm

Two losses against the Pirates. Now nestling in the confines of the basement. Whoop-de-doo. At least Patten looked solid out there today.

Should've won last night as well. Lidge is seriously a head-case, he shouldn't be giving up ninth-inning homers with the stuff he can throw. Then, we load the bases three times with none or one out and then blow them.

Tue Aug 28, 2007 8:23 am

Ah, hopefully they'll turn it around next year. It doesn't really matter where you finish: 1 game back or 30, you're still watching in October.

Lidge's problem is and isn't Pujols. As much as he would like it to, I think he's just taking all this Pujols-itis as an excuse for not pitching well. We all know how good he could be, but he just isn't doing it.

Yeah, and the Astros seem to have a bit of trouble taking advantage of bases loaded situations. I remember Sunday Night Baseball last year, Astros and the Cards, they got 'em loaded with one out in the ninth. Cards had the bring the outfield in, but Lane struck out, and then Preston Wilson. Went on to lose it, didn't they? Bad times...

Weeks 21-23
Let's see...twelve game homestand against the Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, and Padres. And three at LA, and three at SD.

Game 26 Intro
Oswalt's pitching, and I guess by now you can expect what happens. The lefty Estes facing a lefty-hitting team with their ace on the mound? Not good for them...

Game Recap
Top of the second, Alcantara takes Estes deep. It's a solo. McDonald follows up later in the inning with a RBI single. 2-0 Astros.

Alcantara at it again in the fourth. Another solo. 3-0 Astros

Astros' offense break out in the sixth. Ensberg, Teixeira, Romano, and Oswalt gets RBI singles. 7-0 Astros.

Mench adds a sac fly in the seventh. 8-0 Astros.

Teixeira and Oswalt caps off scoring, both with RBI doubles in the eighth. Astros win 10-0.

Grades
Pitching: A+
Don't bother asking what Oswalt got. His 21st win, good thing the voters in the game aren't as ignorant as the real ones; he's leading the
Cy Young and MVP voting.

Batting: A
10 runs. Haven't seen that in a while.

Game 130 Intro
Jaret Wright faces the opposite of Santana: Lance Davis, who has a 2-13 record, almost a mirror image of Santana's 13-1.

Game Recap
Wright not looking sharp early. He gives up RBI singles to Larkin and Junior in the first. 2-0 Reds.

Astros come back and get one on Ensberg's sac fly. 2-1 Reds.

And they promptly tie it up with Wright's RBI single. 2-2 tie.

In the fifth, Lugo gives the Astros the lead with a sac fly. 3-2 Astros.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Astros had a one run lead. And that turns into two runs as Woodward gives Gagne some breathing room with a RBI single 4-2 Astros.

Gagne doesn't need the extra runs. 1-2-3. He strikes out the side for his 34th.

Grades
Pitching: A
Apart from the early struggles by Wright, he pitching was excellent in this game.

Batting: B-
Could do with a lots of improvement. Only four runs. And some of the ribbies have been coming from the pitchers. Good thing I don't use DH.

Game 136 Summary
I'll do a summary for this one instead. Don't feel like rambling on about who got RBI singles today.

The rubber game of this three game set between the Astros and Padres. Oswalt goes for the Astros and Lackey for the Padres. The Astros take the early lead, as they get three in the third. The Padres get one in the sixth (oh no, Oswalt gave up a run!) on Matos's RBI double into the gap. The Astros extend the lead yet again as Romano drives in his second run of the day followed by Wells' RBI double. The Astros wins the game 5-1 and wins the series. As mentioned earlier, Romano had a great night, going 2-4 with two runs and two ribbies. Matos was the lone part of the Padres offense, getting the only RBI as well as two of the four hits allowed by Oswalt.

Oswalt K's the pitcher Lackey on a changeup.

End of Week 23
80-62, 1st in NL Central (we got ourselves in a pennant race, folks! Cards are 3 back!)

Tue Aug 28, 2007 3:25 pm

3 back?!

Biggest lead in a long, long time.

Purpura and Garner fired today. Good riddance for Purpura, but I'm giving best of lucks to Garner. Sure, he's frusturated me with some seriously poor decisions this season (not playing a .330 man, bunting in extra-inning games, bad fielding rotations), but he's done okay with all the stuff we've copped this season. Well, a fresh start for next year at least.

Best-case scenario for next year: Roy pitches lazily for something like a 20-10 record, Woody Williams and Jennings (if we don't trade him) can pitch .500 ball, Wandy is good at home, and then Albers, Sampson and hopefully Patten can pitch decently in that fifth position. Lidge is consistent with the save, converting about 90% (I hope). The offense only needs to be so-so if our pitching staff works and our bullpen isn't shaky at times like this year (could've swept the ANGELS if it hadn't been for the bullpen.) I'm probably being a little over-hopeful, but a couple more seasons should get us back into the playoffs at least.

Wed Aug 29, 2007 8:20 am

House cleaning. I'm not too sad too see the last of Purpura and Garner, especially Purpura.

You can always count on Roy to pull off a good year, but he could do with a bit more run support. If the offense was any better, he just might be leading the league in wins. Bullpen could matter less; he gets 200+ innings every year. I'm not to optimistic about the three guys battling for the fifth spot. The Blue Jays tried that and ended up with nothing, but got away with it because of their farm system. Too bad Koby Clemens dosen't look like he's gonna be as good as his dad.

Have to do a good job in the off-season if they want to get right back into the thick of things. I think another starter could do; it's not really probable that both Jennings and Williams pitch well. The outfield is secure, with Hunter Pence and Lee. And the infield looks not too bad either.

Week 24
Four at Brewers and a pivotal series at home against the Cards.

Game 147 Intro
Kennedy against Rick Ankiel. And no, Ankiel's bat is not as good as it is in real life.

Game Recap
Continuing my struggles against Ankiel. The only offense for five innings was Mench's RBI single in the first. Good thing Kennedy was on. 1-0 Astros through five.

Sixth inning, Kreuter gets to Ankiel for one but that's all. 2-0 Astros.

And then, crunch time. Pujols takes Kennedy deep on a fading fly ball that I thought Alcantara could catch, but no. 2-1 Astros.

And in comes BJ Ryan. He was very effective last time around, but this time, he gives up the tying homer to Scott Rolen. 2-2 tie.

And the fun doesn't stop there. Top of the tenth, Ryan gives up a RBI double to Rolen, putting two in scoring position. I had enough, and in comes Ramirez. Edmonds hits a very high blooper off him...straightaway center...and it drops! Both runners (Ryan's responsibility) scores, 5-2 Cards.

Got the tying run at the plate, but Isringhausen got Woodward to fly harmlessly out to right.

Grades
Pitching: B
Not too horrible. If not for that blooper I had a chance.

Batting: D
There is no "D" gread where I come from. But it's not enough to warrant an "F". Only two runs. I can't look.

Week 25
Very important week. A series at Coors, and a trip to St. Louis, the last time we face them in the regular season.

Games 150-155

Intro
I thought this was going to be a blowout based on the facct that I have a good record at Coors. Jaret Wright against Adam Bernero.

Summary
Astros jump out very early with a three-run first, thanks to RBI hits from Wells, Woodward, and LaRue. But they struggled after that, and in the meantime, the Rockies were crawling back. They get 1 in the bottom of the first, and in the seventh, they pull within one heading into the ninth. Gagne wasn't in good form, even with the 2mph boost on his fastball. He gives up a sac fly to Stynes to tie it, and a RBI single from Preston Wilson that wins the game.
