Atlanta Wins Third Straight In Nail-Biting Fashion
Michael Vick Struggles But Steps Up In The Clutch

Image

Box Score

Atlanta, GA. Today Michael Vick stepped up big time in the final moments of the game to give the Atlanta Falcons a nailbiting 20-13 win over the New Orleans Saints. Vick completed just 32% of his passes and was picked off 3 times, but he delivered the game winning touchdown to WR Ashley Lelie with just 10 seconds remaining and the score tied. Lelie recieved the ball on the sideline, broke a tackle, rebalanced and ran in the final touchdown as Saints fans held their breath.

The game got off to a slow start with plenty off defence and almost no offensive production from either team as they were both held to field goal attempts which gave them their only points of the first quarter. The Falcons defence looked great and forced plenty of punts but they could not take advantage of this as Warrick Dunn and Michael Vick couldnt get anything going, and Vick was forced to run on numerous occasions. In the second quarter, the Buccaneers began firing on all cylinders, and blew out the Falcons offence.

Other than dominateing offensively in the second quarter, they also shut out the Falcons offence by forcing bad passes and getting good penetration on the snap to stop Dunn in the backfield for big losses. On offence, newly promoted now-starting rookie HB Reggie Bush managed to turn what looked like big losses into nice gains and first downs, he finished with 86 yards rushing and also caught a Drew Brees pass of 9 yards. I didnt take long for the Saints to score once again, this time off a field goal from veteren kicker John Carney. For the Falcons, a 6-3 deficet didnt look to bad with halftime just 2 minutes away. Perhaps they were in the wrong state of mind when Drew Brees landed a 8 yard touchdown pass to Donte Stallworth on the final play of the quarter, after allowing huge amounts of yardage - including a 32 yard pass from Brees on the way up and into the red zone.

In the third, the Falcons defence woke up and forced punt after punt. At the same time, Falcons recievers began catchig balls on the regular and Warrick Dunn put on his best Barry Sanders impersonation. As the third quarter wound down, the Falcons finally found themselves in scoring range and made the best of a great oppurtunity, as Michael Vick ran a toucdown in by himself to cut the lead to just 3. This would be the first time the Falcons had been trailing entering the fourth quarter in their three games so far this season.

In the final quarter, it was a stalemate on both sides of the ball, as both offences were cancelled out by their opponents fantastic defensive pressure. This remained the story up until the final minute, when Warrick Dunn broke free to put the Falcons in scoring position. However, Vick couldnt find anyone in the endzone and they were forced to try a potential game tying field goal. Michael Koenen stepped up, and barely made the short attempt to tie the game up with just 44 seconds remaining on the game clock. After Koenen kicked a deep ball into the Saints endzone, rookie Jimmy Williams found a hole and brought down the returner just short of the 20 yard line. Saints HB Reggie Bush tried to get the first down marker, but only managed to make it 3rd and 1 with 32 remaining. Bush recieved the handoff and tried to pick up the first, but Falcons defender Ed Hartwell penetrated the offensive line and demolished Bush in the backfield to force a punt. The Falcons called their last timeout to ensure they would recieve the ball. Allen Rossum, after recieving the punt, somehow managed to find some space and return it 21 yards to once again put the Falcons in scoring position. Michael Vick was hesitant to pass the ball, but after seeing that Warrick Dunn wasnt going anywhere after two plays, he decided to throw. After recieving the snap, Vick dropped back but Saints defender broke through and sacked Vick for a huge loss and it put Atlanta at the 40, far out of Koenens FG range. With just 20 seconds remaining and a 4th and long situation, Vick decided to go no huddle as Atlanta had no timeouts left. Vick dropped back, and only just managed to get the pass off before being crushed. WR Ashley Lelie caught the ball at the 28 yard line, somehow avoided a tackle just inches from the sideline, and managed to run in a 40 yard TD pass with just 10 seconds on the clock to give Atlanta the spectacular win in New Orleans.

Atlanta Falcons Win Fourth Straight Over Cardinals
Vick Struggles Again But Warrick Dunn Carries Atlanta

Image

Box Score

Atlanta, GA. The Falcons cruised to their fourth win in as many games today with a commanding 38-19 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Stopping the run was the main focus of the Atlanta defence going into the game against such a dynamic runner in Edgerrin James. "Tonights win was great, we stopped Edge from creating oppurtunities for the Cards, and that took a little pressure off Mike and Warrick to deliver on offence." said Ed Hartwell, who recorded an amazing 11 tackles, 5 of which were in the backfield.

The game started out sow for both teams, as the Falcons allowed a field goal from K Neil Rackers late in the first quarter. As the offence took the field, Michael Vick struggled to find open recievers, and Warrick Dunn had to carry the load. Dunn took the Falcons all the way down to the 18 yard line, and on 1st and 10, sprinted left and spun around FS Robert Griffith for the touchdown. In the second, the Cardinals came out firing. As they picked apart the defense with great passes, QB Kurt Warner moved the Cardinals with ease all the way up to the goal line. Two plays later, Warner found reciever Larry Fitzgerald wide open in the corner for the easy touchdown. After a failed 2 point conversion, the Falcons received the kickoff.

After a useless offensive showing, the Falcons tried a 52 yard field goal attempt which missed just left of the up-rights, and the Cardinals got the ball back with great field position. I didnt take long for the Cardinals to score once again, as they moved up to the 16, but they were stopped on 3rd down, and they could only take away a field goal from the drive. Not long after DeAngelo Hall returned the kickoff 28 yards, Michael Vick was picked off by Robert Griffith. However, on the first play, with just 1 minute to go in the 2nd, the Falcons' DeAngelo Hall picked off a pass intended for receiver Anquan Boldin, and returned it for a touchdown to give the Falcons a 14-12 lead.

In the third quarter, the Falcons defence stepped up and forced 7 third downs, with only 2 of those being converted. The Falcons took advantage of these situations as they put up 10 points in the quarter, 6 of those came off a miracle pass from Michael Vick to Eric Beverly, that went straight through the hands of Cardinals defender Antrel Rolle. Later in the quarter K Michael Koenen put up 3 more points on a short field goal attempt.

In the final period, the Falcons defence picked off Kurt Warner 3 more times, one of those was in the endzone by DeAngelo Hall for his second INT on the day. Warrick Dunn found the endzone two more times in the quarter as the Falcons went up to the tune of 38-12, with just 3 minutes to go in the game. With a comfortable lead, the Falcons inserted QB Matt Schaub and rookie RB Jerious Norwood. When the Falcons forced another turnover, Norwood looked poised to recieve the handoff. As he got the ball, he ran down the right sideline and broke a tackle on the 10 yard line for the touchdown, however holding was called on the play and the touchdown was not counted. On 1st and 20, Norwood ran left, stiffarmed two players on separate occasions for a breathtaking 47 yard touchdown run. Yet again, holding was called on the play and the TD was withdrawn.

On 2nd and 30, Norwood carried again, but was stopped in the backfield for a short loss. With just 3 seconds to go, he decided to have another crack at it. As Schaub received the snap and went to hand it off to Norwood, he was tackled, causing a fumble. Cardinals defender Karlos Dansby returned the fumble 26 yards for the final score of the game, but the Cardinals lost with a final score of 38-19.

Falcons Fall To New York Giants
Vick, Falcons Struggle Late

Image

Box Score

Atlanta, GA. Today the Falcons winning streak ended at 4 with a 19-10 loss at home to the Giants. The Falcons didnt even convert one third down throughout the entire game, and to make matters worse, the defence couldnt get it done on the other side of the ball, allowing 111 yards rushing by Tiki Barber. The Falcons looked great defensively in the first quarter as both teams went scoreless, but the Atlanta defence seemed as if it was going to be the factor deciding whether or not they were going to improve to 5-0, or suffer their first loss of the season.

The Falcons took the lead in the 2nd quarter, as Michael Vick completed a touchdown pass to WR Ashley Lelie. The Giants fired back quickly, as they marched down the field where they were finally stopped, but still slotted a long field goal to cut the lead to 4. The remaining minutes of the 2nd quarter were an offensive stalemate, as both QB's couldnt get anything going, and the wide recievers failed to catch easy balls for short gains.

After the break, Atlanta found themselves in good position after a 30 yard runback off of the return from DeAngelo Hall. However, they couldnt cap off the drive with a touchdown and had to settle for a short field goal attempt, which gave them a 10-3 advantage. The Giants immediately answered back with a field goal of their own, and just 2 minutes later, found themselves in scoring position once again. Tiki Barber attempted to run it up the throats of the Falcons defence, but they held their ground and the Giants were forced to take yet another field goal, which in turn cut the deficit down to 1, and a 10-9 score going into the final period.

Entering the fourth, the Falcons were stopped on 3rd down on 3 straight drives, and the Giants capitilized on these opportunities as they put together some nice drives. Although one of those ended with a pick, New York managed to put up 3 points off of yet another field goal on their third drive. As the fourth quarter carried on, both offences were locked down by their opponents, forcing each of them to punt on numerous occasions. On what turned out to be their final drive, Michael Vick was picked off, and this gave New York a great oppurtunity to milk the clock. The Falcons forced a 4th down on the 1 yard line for the giants with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock, but as the ball was snapped, a flagged landed on the field. The call - Infringement on the defence. Despite having won the game, the Giants ran a play in the final second to get Tiki Barber and New York their first touchdown of the game.
