Hey Q, those are cool pictures. I will try to scan some of mine to post them here, if you want, and maybe some of my friend Silvio, he loves to draw cowboys and "indians/ american-natives" or however it's said.

dadamafia wrote:In regards to composition I will look at one piece specifically which is the charcoal still life with 4 glasses. The first thing you have to look at is how your eyes flow over the paper. Its good to give the viewer something for their eyes to follow (which covers the contents on the page) in your piece. You have the 4 glasses basically in the four corner which leaves the center of the page blank. Best to avoid blank spaces if there is no reason/purpose for it. Better usage of the paper regarding positioning could help it greatly. Also I dont know if the glasses should be the same size but if they are the perspective is a bit off as the ones closer are smaller than the ones in the back. The shadows also kinda off since if its the ame light source there should be more consistency in their direction.

yeah I didn't try too hard on the cups... it was a quick sketch assignment, the still life was moved like every ten minutes...

um, just growing up in an Asian household... pressure to make lots of money. I realized in college that it's all superficial and it's not worth the time. My grandma always told me to "study hard in school so you can get good grades so you can grow up to be a doctor and buy a big house with 5 bedrooms go I can get a room" (all in Chinese, of course)

I don't know much about drawing, as even my stick figures are shotty. But that stuff is great Qballer. I do notice the effort and cleverness in chades and reflections and such. That's really cool.

And fuck me Tony... that kurt kobain is unbelievable. I would probably pay money to have that on a poster on my wall.
Edit: Lol, i just saw who the 2nd guy was. Bono. Thought it was some famous criminal or something.

Some really cool stuff here.

If I could suggest one thing, I would say slow down. The first ting I notice about most if them is the things that are misshapen (especially the still life stuff). And the straight lines that aren't really straight get kind of distracting. Try to adjust your speed when you can master making realistic shapes time after time.

The faces are definitely what you're best at, even if their are small details that you could pick apart. I think because of the subject matter they are much more powerful. But the only problem I have with them is that the face is really the only good part of the drawings. I used to do the same thing, where I would work really hard on the face, and then not spend much time on the rest. I think the best example of that would be the Malcolm drawing. The face itself is excellent, but the rest looks rushed. And as good as the face is, the thing I remember about that one is the overall look.

I apologize if I've been harsh with this, I've now spent two years being groomed to be brutally honest by profs who are brutally honest. It's been a huge help to me though, especially in my life drawings. Even though those drawings are usually for 30 sec-1 min poses, there is always room for improvement. In the past two years I've done approx. 2000 life drawings (I know, thats a lot of naked people), and there are times that a fellow student or teacher will look at my stuff from that day and basically rip it apart, but its always been a huge help.

And just curious, but what type of career in art are you aiming for? I wasn't sure for many years what type I wanted to do, because I was mainly drawing hockey players out of magazines, and then I realized that doing that doesn't lead to anything. Part way through high school I really liked painting, but then I realized that I really didn't want to depend on having to sell my stuff to be able to eat. Paychecks are much nicer than freelance. By the end of high school I knew I wanted to get into this animation program, even though everyone, including my high school art teacher said it was a waste of time and was too hard to get in to. My first year in college was more of a general art course, and really didn't help me that much, but then last year they created a program that was like an intro year for animation, and my stuff improved dramatically. So yeah, it took 3 tries to figure it out and get in, and yeah that means I'll end up doing 6 years of post secondary, but I know I'll end up finding a good job in a field thats expanding by the minute.

Just FYI, I noticed you're close to LA, if I lived there I'd try like hell to get into Cal Arts. It, along with Sheridan have the two best reputations for art programs in North America. Pretty much every famous animator (John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Steve Williams) is a product of those programs. I'd check it out if I were you.

heh yeah I know one of my faults has been rushing parts I'm not that interested in...
I do notice afterwards that some of my drawings are misshappen (like the ball behind Lebron's head) and it pains me to see that. maybe I'll do it enough times to the point where I get sick of it and take more time on it.
but yeah I take criticism as an opportunity to improve, so it's cool.

career-wise, I'm not 100% sure yet, but my school doesn't offer much as far as art goes. it's heavily based in the sciences & engineering.
Im working on a studio art major & digital art minor, but I'd go digital as a major if they offered it. I'm really trying to learn this photoshop stuff because there will be a high demand of web-based graphics & whatnot... the dude that lived next door to me in the dorms made simple websites on the side for like $500 each. I'm looking into some sort of design-type career, maybe advertising, but I'm not sure yet.

funny you mention Cal Arts because my last drawing teacher graduated from there... it's a really contextually-based school (less emphasis on technical skills, more on content), so that led to my stronger pieces. I never really planned on going there... I'll probably finish out the last 2 yrs at my university and then try to find an internship/job when I graduate. I also heard one of the best Advertising/design schools is in Pasadena (NE of L.A.) but it's hard to get into and it's too far from home.

lol Cloudy that's not a bad start... the shading on the arms & legs are decent but everything still looks flat. First, I would try to find a big close up of a REAL NBA player (lol j/k I just don't like JRich) and then focus on like a head shot and pay close attention to the light and dark places in the picture. Try to visualize the picture as if it were black & white and think about the values of the colors if they become desaturated (turned to black & white).

I think the best place to start is to just do a line drawing. Don't do any shading, and draw lightly. Do a very rough, light sketch first of the overall shape, get the proportions right, and then go back and draw in the different features. Really just focus on the shapes and proportions, and only use solid lines.

Damn, those drawings are pretty neat. I recognize that Ricky Davis pic... you must've took it from Slam eh?

well, when I really like something that I'm doing, I seriously OBSESS over it and after I finish, I look at it and find something else to fix. some of this stuff I did at work and it would take me a few 4 hour shifts to finish. it all depends on your pace and how fast/slow you like to work.

I remember a while back when I was actually interested in art, I was the same. I used strictly pencil, nothing else, just sat down and never got off the chair till I was done and satisfied with the drawing, which usuall took about 3 hours lol. Decided to quit art since I'm not a very patient person, and once I'm done with my work I just couldn't find the will to go back and edit it... bad habit. (n)

That Kurt Cobain drawing...I thought it was a Black & White photo for a sec.

Same, same. Parents told me to go to science or business to find those top tier jobs to make money. Which I never really bothered with. I just hate it when Asian parents force their kids to study something when they're sometimes not even really interested in.

Agreed... being Asian , I was taught at home endless hours of algebra , trigonometry, and math I wasn't interested in. It didn't even help either , I failed the calculus and technically the physics courses in college...

nice drawings by the way

I don't like using charcoal much, I use a lot more conte, just because of all the life drawings. I used just regular black conte for my first year, but last year I found a place that made blue conte :D so that's all I use now.

yeah that's the compressed charcoal... the only problem with it is that it's really hard to move/erase after you put it down.

Well its basically charcoal with oil. It's better because you can maintain a sharper point, instead of charcoal that wears down really fast into a nub.

And it's usually good for life drawings/figure drawings because they're the type of drawings that only last 30 seconds to a minute, so you wouldn't have enough time to erase.

Shading with charcoal? That's gonna be a bigger mess than with pencil! I got this box of charcoal called Nouvel Carre Pastel... is that the one I'm suppose to use??

Cloudy, that's good for a first. You're better than me, the best I could get was this.
I've done it yesterday and it is the second time I actually seriously try to draw something. The reference photo was this

digging up the ol' thread cuz I just finished a sick painting (and it's 6:50 AM). It was one crazy night... I spent about 2 hours (and 2-3 gallons of gas) trying to cure myself of a craving for fried chicken (I went to a busy KFC a total of 5 times before I was able to get what I wanted). I'm god awful at painting, but maybe this was the first painting i actually cared about.

EDIT: this one i did a few weeks back was pretty good:
