George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen and Steve Martin are probably the best comedians ever, which is why so many comedians try to copy them.
Chappelle isn't special, he's just taken what Pryor, Murphy and Rock have said/done and added more pop culture to it. He's a hack. Dane Cook is occasionally funny, but its almost never what he says thats funny, just how he says it. He basically has no jokes. It seems like comedians nowadays rely just on their profanity for jokes, because they've seen Carlin, Kinison and Pryor do it right and thought they could do it to. They can't. Your whole joke can't just lead to s vulgar reference.
My favourite comedian right now is David Cross. "Shut up you fucking baby!" is the best comedy album of this generation, and his style is unlike any comedian I've heard. He's intelligent, he's satirical, and he fits so much into a routine.
I wish however that my favourite right now could be Mitch Hedberg, but he had a little too much fun. He took what Steven Wright had done, and made it his own, and made it better. If his career had lasted longer than only about 10 years, and only a few years in the limelight, he would have been one of the best comedians ever.
Lewis Black is another of my favourites, but his newer albums aren't as good, as he keeps making them in bigger and bigger places, the last one in Carnegie Hall. For his type of comedy, he needs to stick to small clubs where he can stick to every day stuff instead of always big pop culture or all political stuff.
Heh, just checked my iTunes, I now have 4 days and 6 hours worth of comedy albums, so I've pretty much heard it all by now.
