Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I've been reading Snopes the last couple of days and thought it might be worth posting some more info on it. Seems it might be real, though if so it's exact origins are undetermined. A similar medical condition does exist but the story remains unconfirmed.

I don't think it's fake, look at the links inside the Snopes article. The University of Utah Health Sciences Center have very similar cases. No necks, huge eyes...etc
