I'm not sure Andrew has a great deal of interest in Terrell Owens.

Liverpool won on penalties, but it was a fantastic game, especially that dbl save from Dudek.

I have never seen anything like that before, that's gotta be the best sports moment in 2005.

Soccer is for pussies.

You know what I'm going to do Vank?
I'm going to get a football (soccer ball).
Kick it to hit any part of your body.
Kick you on your crotch area. While you're on the ground,
I'm going to replace my football shoes with the old ones that have metal spikes.
Crush your genitals with the metal spikes.
Stomp on your face until it's unrecognizable. While you're lying on the ground almost half-dead,
I'm going to kick sand or grass where your mouth used to be and
I'm going to fart in that thing that used to be your face.

Sat Dec 31, 2005 4:36 am

 Like I said, soccer is for pussies.

^^ That's because you play in Europe :P

No!!! There has to be somebody to carry on the Scientology torch!

This joke isn't even funny anymore.

I don't like soccer but as an American , trying to persuade a majority of european and nonamerican posters why I don't like soccer is like fighting a losing battle , so I'm just going to keep my mouth shut :).

Someone sold his soul to the devil to make this game so popular. "Hey, what if we threw a bunch of guys onto the court and they would kick a ball into giant goals." "Great idea. Logically, the court will be small and number of guys will be limited to a small number, five per team plus a goalie for instance. That would make game fast and exciting." "What about if we made the court obscenely large and double the number of guys on the court to slow things down? Speed kills, you know." Yes, that's so much better.

The pure fact that he actually made the news on every commercial TV station over here says it all. This basketballing black hole of a country really needed a kick up the ass to try and expand the game to where it should be, and Bogut is a huge first step. Once he starts to mould into the Bucks system and consistantly puts up big numbers he'll get a shit load of attention here, since he's on the news every time he has a good game

How could I have missed that one? Definitely a great moment for us Aussie basketball fans.

Also how could you miss his game wining alley-hoop tip in to win over the spurs.

Sat Dec 31, 2005 8:31 am

That was great too, but not as monumental as him being picked at number one in the first place.

Sat Dec 31, 2005 11:05 am

But man, I used to think the same when it came to "He's saying what he thinks" .. but I think that's wrong in a way too.. there should be a filter between his mouth and his mind.

The Eagles organisation had told the press that TO would be allowed to rejoin the eagles yes.. but that apology was pathetic.. his agent took the spotlight. TO had a 1 minute part in the whole thing I think.. he just sat back and let his agent do all the talking. I think that was a fair indicator that he didn't really mean what he said.

Is TO a good athlete.. yes he's a phenomenal athlete.. Is TO a player young athletes should look up to? NO. He's bringing out the politics in sports.. there's times where you have to hushup and play.. no matter what the situation is.. you're paid to play the game.. not tangle with the QB when the camera's arent looking.

Personally I blame McNabb aswell.. but he did the same thing as TO .. just the smarter way.. he took his problems with TO to the organisation.. not to the media. As soon as you let loose on the media you've just dug your own grave.

But thats not true. Look at someone like Tim Duncan. He gets criticised for being too "regular", "too boring" and not "honest" enough. Now when an athlete is open and honest about how he feels, he gets ripped for it? Fans and the media cant have it both ways.

As for his apology, of course it was forced. But that to me shows exactly how much he just wants to play the game. He was willing to go and do it publicly. He did what the agles wanted and they didnt hold up their end of the bargain.

Owens is a good role model for sports becuase he loves the game and he is honest about what he feels. Confidence and motivation are influenced very little by outside factors. They come from within. Look at great athletes from basketball: Jordan, Iverson, Russell, Bird.. all the criticism they have all recieved in their careers yet they have all achieved so much. Sure Owens lacks tact. But its much better for an athlete to be honest about himself and his teamates than to be dillsuional. Just take adonal foyle as an example. He may think he is a rising star, but he isnt. If was honest and true to himself, he'd realise he's overpaid and a bust, and would probably work his guts out to change that. Its much better to be realistic about how good you are.

But to the rest of my favourite 2005 sporting memories.

NBA Finals
Sure the first 4 games were boring.. but the final 3 more than made up for it. Horrys heroics in game 5, the pistons resiliance in game 6 and the spurs playing (and winning) as a group in game 7. For years I've always wanted to see a winner-take-all game in the nba finals, and finally it happened. Sure there wasnt a superstar individual player, but there were two great teams battling it out for the ultimate prize in basketball. You cant ask for much more than that.

Reggie Miller
An unbelievable career of class and flopping. What a contradiction! But seriously, Reggie Miller, the last great from that 80's generation retired last year. He played hard, played to win, and played for the most part the right way. His clutch shots will be remembered forever by most casual fans; but the thing about him I'll remember the most is game 1 of the 2000 finals. He shot 1-16. Then he came back to nearly single handedly beat the lakers by himself. Compare that to Nick Anderson, who experienced a similar nightmare in game 1 of the 95 finals where he missed 4 free throws: his career was never the same. Reggie rebounded in that same series.

Tiger Woods
I dont respect golf. But at the Masters, Woods' performance gave me goosebumps. What he did was amazing. All the criticism for marrying a beautiful woman (seriously, how wrong is that? he gets criticised for marrying. and yet people are blinded by how fucked the sports media is). He endured his worst golfing season the year before.. and then to answer all that with that eagle shot that just rolled in. Amazing. He is (along with Federer) the elite athlete in the world today.

Mike Tyson
When I was growing up, Tyson was so dominant it wasnt even funny. Its a shame the way he went out. Its a shame people will think of him as a pshcyo and all that. They should remember him as this: the greatest heavyweight of all time.

The Ashes
Nobody is more loving of their country than me. I love Australia. But I can honestly say losing the ashes did not hurt me one bit. One thing I always try to do is to put the game ahead of my favourite team. When England beat Australia, cricket recieved a boost in excitment that only steroids could do for baseball. Congrats to england, and the aussies retake whats theirs next year

Better than Ali?

Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:00 pm

I'm still not sold on why everyone think's Ali was the best. Now I'm hardly a dedicated boxing fan, but I don't even know if he was the best boxer of his generation. Joe Frazier was right there with him and beat him in the first of their 3 matches. When it comes to being an entertainer Ali was in a class of his own, but that means nothing to me. You watch tape of a young Mike Tyson and he was such a vicious motherfucker. His opponents were at the very top of boxing and they were intimidated out of their skin not by what Tyson would say in a press conference, but by his sheer skill and tenaciousness. That to me ranks him above Ali.

Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:12 pm

According to boxing analyst Jim Lampley , Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest , a belief espoused by many boxing experts.

Many boxing fans and critics regard Robinson as pound for pound the best boxer of all time. Muhammad Ali, who repeatedly called himself "The Greatest," has said without hesitation that while he considers himself the greatest Heavyweight, he considers Robinson the greatest fighter of all time.

Mike Tyson was probably one of the best young heavyweights. I remember Max Kellerman once saying on his WEPN radio show that if Mike Tyson in his prime had fought Ali or anyone , that Tyson would have won.

I'm not really a boxing fan either so I'm just siding with the mainstream view that Ali's the best. I like Mike, probably mostly because he's such a strange person. Even now when he seems to get the shit belted out of him every fight, people are still scared of him. Plus the footage of him knocking a big fat guy at a motel 5 metres across the room with one punch is something I'll never forget

Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:31 pm

Reggie Miller- This one was bittersweet for me. Watching my idol of my entire life leave the game was extremely tough. However, his last game was such a special, special moment. Unfortunately... the bitter outweighs the sweet. Reggie retired without a ring, and that's all I can think about, and it drives me crazy.

White Sox winning the World Series: What an incredibly amazing ride last season was. I was watching game 4 with 3 of my best friends after watching most of the playoff games in more of a party atmosphere, so that was great. We just drove around the city screaming and acting like lunatics for awhile, it was amazing.

Indy, a ring doesnt make or break a player. You are measured by the impact you have on the game.

Ali, then Cassus Clay, defeated Sonny Liston, the Champ and best at the time

He lost to Frazier in the first match but defeated Frazier when both fighters were arguably in their prime. He did beat Frazier yet again in the Philippines

My favorite fight and IMo his best match was defeating George Foreman, who then was the reigning champion and hardest puncher of the sport. Previously Foreman destroyed and embarrased Frazier earning him at the time IRRC as the sports the most feared boxer. (dude if you haven't already- watch the delayed reaction from Frazier's body after Foreman clubs him with a body shot. he falls to one knee then a second later his whole body jumps in the air)

Now those 3 guys he defeated are considered amongst the best all-time heavyweight boxers

contrary to what you think, Tyson (in his prime- before he went to jail) didn't have any great figher in his prime to face. Both Spinks and Holmes were already fading as fighters, especially Holmes (very similar to what Holmes did to Ali). Arguably Tyrell Bigs was the best boxer he fought and defeated. i'll agree he was one scary mofo but once Buster Douglas showed how to defeat him- not be intimidated and keep him from closing in by jabbing him, Tyson was finished

lol does Kellerman know what he's talking about?? A Tyson in his prime vs Ali in his prime match- now that would be just awesome to watch. Not only did Ali have great boxing skills, he was a smart fighter, and wouldn't be intimidated by Tyson. Tyson was powerfully built like a tank but his reach was short. Ali would use this to his advantage and frustrate Tyson. Ali would win this match easily. Just my opinon ;)
