PARIS, Aug 17 -- Four passenger airline crashes, three of
which were fatal, have made August 2005 the worst month for commercial jet
disasters in over three years.
With the crash of a Colombian aircraft in Venezuela Tuesday, the total
number of passengers and crew killed over the past two weeks has reached at
least 297 -- the worst toll since May 2002, when 422 people died in four
jetliner crashes, according to the Aviation Safety Network, a private Dutch
website that compiles aviation accident statistics.
This month has seen four passenger aircraft crashes.
- The Colombian-owned MD-82 passenger plane came down in western Venezuela
on Tuesday, with the loss of all passengers and the eight-person Colombian crew
Colombian officials put the passenger death toll at 152, but French officials
gave a figure of 153 and said all were French residents of the Caribbean island
of Martinique.
- On Sunday, a Cypriot Boeing 737 crashed near Athens in Greece, killing all
121 people on board.
- On August 6, a Tunisian-chartered ATR-42 dived into the sea off Sicily,
killing 16 people. Twenty-three people were rescued.
- And on August 2, an Air France Airbus A340 crashed on landing at Toronto,
Canada. All 309 passengers and crew managed to escape before the plane was
engulfed in flames.
Investigations are underway for all of the crashes.
According to the Aviation Safety Network, the last time the civilian
aviation safety record took such a beating was in May 2002, when four jetliner
crashes accounted for over a third of the 1,106 fatalities recorded for that
year.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation said that last year, in
contrast, proved the safest year since 1945, with 410 passenger deaths. 2003 sa
700 killed, it said.
The worst accident in civil aviation history remains a March 27, 1977 crash
at Tenerife on the Canary islands, when two Boeing 747s collided on a runway,
resulting in 583 deaths.

That's insane. I'm glad I'm not flying this year, otherwise I'd reluctantly instill in myself a sense of paranoia.

when its yer time its yer time.
wether you are in the safest place in the world

RIP and condolences.
I actually do have to fly in a few week's time.

Shall I make the "Andrew Begley Memorial Admin Replacement Poll" now or tomorrow?
Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:24 pm
Might as well wait until I leave. I don't want anyone eyeing off my comfy chair before I vacate it.
It's really not the best endorsement for air travel.

Damn, after hearing many of these plane crashes. It makes be a bit worry when I am going to overseas.

meh, i travelled in June & August and im not phased about all these crashes. Like Coolmac said, when it's your time it's time and you can't do anything about it so stress less and smoke mor.....err, wrong message.
besides, if you fly with the big airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qantas, American Airlines or whatever, chances are you'll be safe since big airlines take care of their planes and have skilled & experienced pilots. Take a look @the recent crashes with fatalities....all airlines are unknown.

We were in school like two years ago, and we were talking about this shit ass game were you controlled pixelated semi-naked bimbos and played volleyball with them. We were like 10 talking and I commented: "Man, there is this real bad game, were you play volley with sexy hos! If I remember correctly, one of them was named Candy. Fuck, who in heaven's name is named Candy, the cheapest prostitute ever would be called Candy LOL".
Then everybody was quiet and stared at me, then at another guy in the group. He said: "Dude, my mom's name is Candy". Then I walked away.

How is that even a bad experience? If anything, I would have laughed in his face even more.

It's suprising how they say flying is safer than driving.
Thu Aug 18, 2005 6:59 am
That's because that there is a LOT smaller chance of a drunk or someone drugged out or even an idiot piloting a plane than a car.

In the US, each year there are about 40,000 deaths per year in automobile
accidents vs. about 200 in air transport. To put this in perspective, the
chance of dying in an automobile accident is about 1000 times more than
winning a typical state lottery in a year.
If we ignore property and bodily damage and focus on fatalities only, we
should look at fatality rates per passenger mile traveled. This require some
research. You can go to the National Transportation Safety board website
(
http://www.itsasafety.org) to do some research or look at a summary table
here (
http://hazmat.dot.gov/riskcompare.htm). According to the latter, each year in the US 1 out of 6800 drivers dies in an auto accident. The rate for airline passengers is 1 in 1.6 million. The same table shows that per
passenger mile, air travel is safer by more than a factor of two. I doubt
this last figure; I think it should be about 100x safer, because I guess we
drive and fly the same number of miles (give or take a factor or 2-5) per
year, yet fatalities are 200 times higher for autos than for airlines.

The only problem is, those 200 deaths tend to happen in 1 crash.

That is true.. so the chances of a plane crashing are much less than someone dying in a car accident.. but the amount of people who die in one car crash equals almost a years worth of car accidents

i thought the Cascades die in a plane crash. why the fuck are they holding a concert here in our country?
Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:15 pm
The safest airline, at the moment, is Air New Zealand!!!
The accident rate and the death rate is either very low or none..

I don't really believe in that though, we certainly seem to have the power to change our own destiny. Still, I want to go to my brother's wedding and I've already arranged to have the days off work so I guess I'll just have to take my chances.

Andrew, bring a parachute in your carry-on.
Fri Aug 19, 2005 11:35 am
borther's wedding are cool....might see your future bride their too.[wait are you married] just catch that flower thing if your still not
why is it impossible to parachute out in a commercial airline? i mean they shoud fly in low attitude, open the door hatch and let the passengers jump off
