Greatest gaming moments

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

rewind back to early 1995....the game, NBA Live 95....the opposition, my older brother....background info, my brother and I played about a few hundred games (5 minute quarters with Custom Teams) and I won about 80-85% of the time, games were usually always close, but I always stepped up in the clutch....

basically, I had beaten my brother the last 9 or 10 games straight and he was finally going to beat me as he was up by 8 points in the last minute....but a player named John Stockton stepped up for me, as he made two 3 pointers, made 2 steals and a couple of assists....I think I somehow reeled off about 8 straight points in the space of 30 odd seconds to tie it up....my brother managed to score with about a second remaining, and he started to celebrate prematurely....I called a timeout and knew exactly who I was going to, John Stockton....inbounded the ball to Stock, quickly threw up a 3 and swish....game over, I win by a single point....at this point, my older brother exploded and threw the controller against the TV screen

great memories....

Who could forget Live 95? This was my favourite memory of that game:

When I had Live 95, I used to trade for all my favourite players and have a dream starting 5. Then I would sim the season, and play the playoffs in a 1-3-3-3 format. I had always breezed through the playoffs. One season I had Shaq/ C. Robinson (at the time one of my favorite players)/ Pippen/ Drexler/ Penny as my starters. I had gone undefeated in the first 2 rounds of the post season, and then I beat Seattle quite convincingly to take game 1. In game 2 the series looked over, with my team up by about 20 in the second quarter when I stopped concentrating and started jacking up shots with Cliff Robinson to boost his stats. Seattle came roaring back and completely dominated the second half, with Kemp being unstoppable and Payton playing awesome. This was the first time I lost in live 95 with a team I had traded players for.

In game 3 I knew I had to be focused, and Penny and Pippen had great games. But Seattle was always hanging around. Cliff Robinson wasn’t doing much and Drexler had all but disappeared. Kemp and Payton were still on fire and Detlef started to emerge in the fourth and my lead of 8 had evaporated to nothing as Seattle tied the game in the last minute. Penny would respond with a driving dunk with less than 3 seconds to go and it looked like I was going to the finals. Payton got the inbound at his own baseline and forced up a prayer which was defended by Penny, and the son of a bitch made it! I’ll never forget the noise of net snapping and the moan of the crowd as Payton had just delivered the best shot I had ever seen in Live, and even though I had lost, that will go down as one of my top 5 live moments, that series.

I can't completely remember the lineups that my brother and I played but I'll take a guess....

My Team (Custom All-Stars)
C- H. Olajuwon/P. Ewing/D. Mutombo
PF- K. Malone/C. Webber
SF- S. Elliott/D. Wilkins
SG- M. Richmond
PG- J. Stockton/T. Hardaway

Brother's Team (Custom All-Stars)
C- D. Robinson/S. O'Neal/A. Mourning
PF- D. Coleman/S. Kemp/L. Johnson
SF- S. Pippen
SG- C. Drexler/R. Miller
PG- M. Price/P. Hardaway

not sure, must have forgot the rest....and probably have confused what player was on what team....

Of course I didn't keep you guys updated.

I cry about this every night :(

I had alot of fun doing my franchise stories, admittedly I might've over-exaggerated certain rookies abilities (Qyntel Woods was not only the new T-Mac, he was actually better then T-Mac ) but it was still cool.

Mortal Kombat 1: There was this guy who was unbeatable in Mortal Kombat and I was constantly losing to him. I decided to use Johnny Cage to beat him cheaply, by constantly using the split punch while cornered. After 2 victories, the FINISH HIM screen came up. I went close and instead of doing the fatality, I did a split punch. I laughed like hell. He became angry and turned off the game, tossed the game to the floor and tossed the controller to the floor. I don't think we ever played Mortal Kombat 1 again.

NBA Live 2004: I was playing 2 on 2 and my teammate didn't really pass at all. So even though I was playing Zach Randolph, I basically had to run the floor and serve as a point forward (yea...weird..). Darius Miles, who my teammate was playing, ended up scoring 98 points in the game (with 5 minute quarters!!) with about 1 assist and Zach Randolph got 20 assists and I think 10 points.

NBA Live 2004: I was playing 2 on 2 again and we picked the Houston Rockets. Yao had 20 blocks. In the second half, the other team was SCORELESS. We made a rule that Yao would never be used again since he was a cheat character. Final score was 70 to 10 I think.

NBA Live 2005: I was playing against a friend and I managed to score 90% of my points with ally oops with the Phoenix Suns. I was banned from ever playing Phoenix Suns again.

NBA Live 2005: I was playing 2 against a computer opponent. We managed to beat the scoring record, the 3 pt record, the team 3 pt record and the steals record all in one game. (Almost beat the assist record too!) The difficulty level was just starter though. But it was funny watching Peja score 105 points and be in the record books. (Although I hate Peja, but whatever.)

NBA Live 2005: I was playing against a friend and it was Pacers vs. Pistons. With 2 seconds left, Greg Foster was with the ball and had to shoot the 3. Since Foster has a 3pt shooting rating of 0, I laughed like hell and left him all alone to shoot a 3. It went in. There was a cool animation with all the bench members looking in amazement...(Which I haven't seen since then). What followed was one of the most intense matches in my NBA Live career history. Buzzer beater after another, we went into Quadruple over time and just decided to call it a tie because it was 5 AM in the morning. (And because we were falling asleep while playing) (Isn't that what happened to Wilt's game?)

Mario Kart Double Dash: I was way in the lead in the course, around a minute in the lead. I was hit by 3 blue shells, followed by 3 red shells then followed by the wario bomb. I finished 4th -_-;;.

I used to dominate people with Liu Kang on that game (Y) And all other subsequent Mortal Kombat's. My cousins were living with our family at the time, they were all teenagers and I was like 6 years old or something and we'd spend ages playing MK 1 and 2. To begin with they'd beat me 100% of the time, but after about 3 months or so I could regularly beat them 8-)

Another greatest game moment: After Liu Kang is killed off in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance I was in a mild video game depression, but I unlocked Zombie Liu Kang in MK: Deception and then his alternate costume (which just stops him from looking like a freak)... it was so awesome to hear him screaming like a girl while pounding someone with the bicycle kick, then hitting people with the low fireball when they duck expecting another flying attack  ... too much time spent on this game series.

NBA Live 2004, played vs. my friend.
I couldn't play that game for shit, only my defense was up to par with his skills, but somehow I won on a Ricky Davis dunk in the buzzer. :bday:

Well if I remember correctly, either NBA Live 2003 or 2004 had this bug? where taller players would have a much better chance of making shots in. My brother would abuse 3 pointers with Yao Ming and have like 10 each game. (Oh don't even get me started about Dirk...) Even with Shaq you could make a few.
Bored.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Walking out into Hyrule field for the first time with a full sense of wonderment at the 3D world and having one of the greatest gaming experiences to date lying ahead of me. Seeing Hyrule Castle off in the distance and running to it only for day to turn to night and the draw bridge raised before I could get to it.

Bomberman: 3~4 player bomberman is always a blast to play. I think Bomberman probably clocks longer than most games in terms of total playing time. I remember one of my friends in the heat of the moment won a game and screamed "Look at me!" at the top of his lungs. My other friend and I replied "What kind of a retarded taunt phrase is that?" So after every game we'd all scream "Look at me!" because it was so retarded...

Gabriel Knight 2: I didn't sleep until I beat this game because it was such a good game. I think I played for 24 hours straight.

I'll start out with NBA Live 2005, then move onto some other games. Since I'm feeling lazy, I'll copy and paste the recaps from my Dynasty mode. Note that they're in the context of a Dynasty thread, so I'm either doing an NBA.com style recap or a coach's journal. I am aware it's just a game. ;)

December 4th, 2004
Chicago 132, Washingon 125 2OT

[ Boxscore ]
Note: Apparently, NBA Live 2005 doesn't track the overtime stats seperately. Both teams scored 10 points in the first overtime, Chicago scored 20 in the second overtime while Washington scored 13.

Overtime games haven't been too kind to us this season. You may recall losses to Phoenix and Denver with the offense breaking down in the waning seconds of the extra period. At times it looked as though the same thing would happen in this one, but we eventually prevailed after an exciting 58 minute contest.

For a while there, it didn't look like they'd be any overtime coming at the end of regulation. The first quarter ended with a tie at 21, but the Wizards pulled away in the second quarter as Arenas and Hughes abused the perimeter defense off the dribble before making our big men look foolish inside. Gordon was scoring easily, but he soon got into foul trouble. We fell behind by as many as ten, but brought the deficit back to single digits by the hald.

In the third, Washington ran up a 15 point lead that we managed to cut to six by the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter was our finest, but as the quarter drew to a close we were both in the penalty. We should have been able to close them out, but an ill-advised foul led to a 102-102 tie with 5 seconds left. We managed to rush the ball up the floor, but it was Chandler who had to take the final shot. It missed off the back of the rim, and we went into OT.

Knowing our tendency to fall apart in the OT, I slowed down the pace on offense while aggressively double teaming on defense. It worked for most of the first overtime, but a couple of careless fouls put us in the penalty.

With less than 10 seconds left in the game and the Wizards up 112-110, we were forced to foul Antawn Jamison to put him at the line. He missed both, and Chandler grabbed the rebound. We quickly called timeout, and set up a very simple play - Hinrich would receive the inbounds pass while Curry would post up down low where he would receive the entry pass for a shot to tie it. Curry couldn't establish position, but Chandler did. Hinrich got the inbound, sent it to Chandler who spun baseline and put up a layup that was good, with 0.2 seconds left. Double OT.

I'd been playing the starters since about halfway through the fourth quarter and by now, fatigue was starting to set in, especially with Chandler. But I decided that they were playing too well to shake things up now. I used the same gameplan at the start of the second overtime and again it worked, but a couple of defensive breakdowns allowed the Wizards to catch up. With about two minutes left, they took a 121-120 lead. We kept pounding the ball into Curry and he delivered, throwing down some powerful dunks and making a couple of circus shots.

Even though we led 126-123 with just under a minute and half left, the Wizards threatened to make one last run. However, Hinrich made a steal and passed the ball up to Curry, who ran the entire frontcourt for the dunk. Washington was forced to foul, so we ended up taking the game 132-125. Quite possibly the game of the year so far.

December 28th, 2004
Chicago 100, New Jersey 93 OT

[ Boxscore ]

Ben Gordon scored 12 of his 23 points in overtime as the Bulls defeated New Jersey to end 2004 with four straight victories and a record of 16-10. The Bulls do not play again until New Year's Day, when they face the Orlando Magic.

Chicago appeared to have the game under control at halftime; having built an eight point lead, it seemed as though they would continue to keep the Nets at bay in the second half. But a couple of New Jersey fast breaks to begin the third quarter caught the Bulls by surprise. Though they remained solid defensively, the Bulls went cold from the field, shooting just 23% in the quarter. New Jersey held a 54-52 lead heading into the final period, having outscored Chicago 24-12.

The Bulls rallied in the fourth quarter and the two teams traded baskets in the final six minutes. With less than a minute left, it seemed Chicago would prevail, but Jason Kidd hit a long three to tie the game at 80. Eddy Curry made a dunk to give the Bulls an 82-80 lead, but Aaron Williams hit a short jumper with 0.4 seconds left to tie it up again. Ben Gordon had a chance to win the game with a three, but his shot bounced hard off the back of the rim.

Though he had missed the potential game winner, Chicago did not give up on Gordon, feeding him the ball early in the extra session. He responded by scoring the Bulls' first eight points in overtime, as they pulled out of the Nets' reach. The Nets would cut the deficit to 4, 92-88 with just over two minutes left but Kirk Hinrich hit a three to seal the game.

February 9th, 2005
Chicago 107, Houston 106

[ Boxscore ]

When the Houston Rockets took an 84-66 lead into the fourth quarter, most folks figured the game was over. The Chicago Bulls were not amongst their number.

The Bulls completed one of the greatest comebacks this season outscoring the Rockets 41-22 in the final quarter to escape Houston with a 107-106 victory. Playing the second game in a tough back-to-back road trip in Texas, Chicago got a little help from their bench to completely turn the tables on the Rockets, who led by double digits for most of the game.

Houston jumped out to an early lead as they capitalised on offensive rebounds and Yao Ming's seven inch height advantage on Eddy Curry. The Bulls could do little to stop Yao, who would finish with 28 points on 13/20 shooting. Tracy McGrady and Jim Jackson hit threes on consecutive possessions to extend the lead to as many as 24 during the second quarter. When a third quarter run led by rookie standout Ben Gordon failed to make much of a dent in the deficit, it appeared the game was over.

Eric Piatkowski, the Bulls' reserve swingman who has been used sparodically so far this season and came off the injured list a few days ago, had one of the most amazing quarters in NBA history. Pike scored 28 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter shooting a blistering 7/12 from beyond the arc. The Rockets were reeling as Chicago continued to close the gap with every three pointer Piatkowski drained.

Though he would finally cool off missing his final two three point attempts, his last made three closed the gap to one, 98-97 with under two minutes left. But the Rockets scored on a dunk by Yao and appeared to put a halt to the unlikely comeback. The Bulls would not be denied, trailing just 105-103 with under a minute left to play. Ben Gordon drove baseline and slammed home an emphatic dunk over Tracy McGrady to cut the deficit to one with 30 seconds left.

Houston would have a chance to put the game out of reach, but could not penetrate the Bulls' defense, forcing Juwan Howard to put up a desperation three that missed. Chicago hustled to grab the rebound and called timeout with 10 seconds left. Piatkowski inbounded the ball to Kirk Hinrich, who dumped the ball down low to Eddy Curry. Curry however had bad position and was forced to dish off to Luol Deng.

Deng caught the ball at the free throw line, pump faked Juwan Howard into the air and drove hard to the basket for a layup that sat on the rim and appeared to be on the verge of spinning out, before slowing dropping through the hoop as time expired. As the referees went through the formality of checking the replay, the Chicago bench went crazy imploring them to not to wave off the basket even though there seemed little doubt that the bucket would indeed count. With the indication of the made basket, the Bulls' players celebrated while Rockets fans sat in stunned silence.

February 25th, 2005
Chicago 98, Washington 96

[ Boxscore ]

Ben Gordon continues to make a strong case for Rookie of the Year as his game high 33 points and last second basket avoided overtime and a possible third straight loss as Chicago defeated Washington 98-96 at the United Center.

The third overall pick's dunk with 0.8 seconds left capped a 13 point fourth quarter which the Bulls began trailing by one and allowing Washington to lead by as many 7. Gordon appeared to have given Chicago the lead for good with two baskets late in the quarter, but Larry Hughes' three pointer cut the deficit to 83-82.

The Wizards would again take the lead, but the Bulls remained unrattled and evened the score at 94. Eddy Curry scored after a Bulls timeout to put Chicago ahead by two. The Wizards, having exhausted all of their timeouts, rushed the ball up the floor and found Brendan Haywood for a short jumper that tied the game with 1.7 seconds left.

After Chicago called their final timeout, Luol Deng inbounded the ball to Ben Gordon deep in the post. Gordon quickly spun baseline and elevated for a dunk that left Washington with less than a second left and no choice but to throw up a prayer from their own backcourt.

Though it seemed Chicago would fall victim to the same problems they had in their last two games after a sluggish first half, they outscored Washington 28-22 in the third quarter. Chicago also did a much better job of taking care of the ball, committing only 11 turnovers.

Washington got 13 points and 7 rebounds from Kwame Brown, the first overall selection of the 2001 NBA Draft who has been heavily criticised since entering the league. Jarvis Hayes was also a solid contributor off the bench for the Wizards with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Gilbert Arenas top scored for Washington with 17, but was held to 7/20 shooting and had only 2 assists.

Playing through the whole 2003/2004 season in NBA Live 2004 and winning the championship with the Bulls was also a great moment in my NBA Live career, I simmed most of the 2004/2005 season and ended up playing the Finals, making it a back-to-back.

Live can be creepy somtimes. Its funny how good those games were against the wiz, and the first round series between the bulls and the wizards turned out to be a great series.

I was hoping you'd post memories of the 2002 franchise with the Kings :proud:. Did you do a dynasty for 2003?

I did, with the Wolves, but it wasn't very memorable. Except for the blocks out of bounds and the fan who wanted Efthimos Rentzias' autograph during that game against the Sixers.

My greatest moment was in MVP 04. I was the Braves. Went 100-62 1st place in the NL. Met the Yankees in the World Series. The moment I had been waiting for all season long. Lost the first 2 games but won the next two. They won game six and I was getting nervous. Chipper had been out almost all year with a knee problem. I had picked up Aaron Boone after Jones went down. It was bottom of the ninth and Boone was up. It was tied 2-2. Rivera had already blown the save when he gave up the game tying homer to Andrew Jones. He threw me a fastball on the outside corner and Aaron Boone hit it out. How fitting right? Hits one to get them past the redsox in real life and hit one for me to beat the Yankees. That had to be the best gaming moment ever.
