Are there any black people besides the aborigenes there at all?

I doubt that there was any noticeable population of "black people" in England at that time. And they sent any criminal that made a semi-bad crime (mostly thief’s, poachers, rebels & prostitutes) from the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. Not their "black people" (:wink:)... There was like 160 000 prisoners that was shipped there during a period of somewhere around 80 years, and almost every one of them was "white people".
Although when you talk about how Australia was founded on prisoners’ argument, you should also keep in mind that England was sending prisoners to America 100 years before and during a longer period of time than they were sending prisoners to Australia...

If you wonder why the hell I know some of these things; I made a small project work on the history of the Aborigines a few months ago...

Well personally I think that negro or colored is kinda racist. I personally don't take offense to it but it just doesn't sound all that positive. I personally prefer black or african american. I'm mixed black/ puerto rican indian, probably about half and half. To me we're just people though. Just my two cents.

Yeah, that's weird. They call themselves American, but I'm also American, just a little south of them . Anyway, it would be weirdier (is that a word?) that they call themselves United Statians or something.

Don't spanish speaking people refer to us as "estadounidenses" or something like that which virtually means "United Statesians" or something close to that?

1: Yes, there are black people here besides Aboriginals. We get immigrants from all over the World, including African nations. Also there's a fair few African-Americans here too I guess

2- No. Australia wasn't a prison for black people. It was a place the British used to keep their own prisoners (who were basically white). A prison for black people, where'd you come up with that one Frank?

Yes, we call you like that, 'cause we're also Americans. But I was saying that in English sounds very weird.

I think "negro" is a very offensive word... something that's strange for a lot of americans (United Statesians ) that come here is how we nickname people depending on how they look like...
eg: If we meet a bald guy and became friends we would call him "Pelao" which is something near "Baldy". In the US that would be slightly disrespectful!!
Also, you could lovingly call your wife "Gordita" which means "Fatty", when in the US you would suffer the consequences...

I absolutely agree with Goat, the term was made-up thinking of it as an offense to black people... I wouldn't want a friend of mine callin me "spic", even though I know he's just playin around...
