I think its because its the only "visual aid" you have to imagine who your talking to. If you had no avatar I would imagine you to look like Marcus Williams, and if you had no sig... well I don't know.

That's kinda true. When dadamafia first came onto the forums with the Phil Jackson avatar, I thought of him to be an older guy just based on his avatar and his good use of the English language.
