Just finished watching Mediterraneo for the third time in the past month. Beautiful, beautiful movie. Definitely ranks in my top 5 movies ever.
Recommended to those who appreciate foreign movies or to those who are tired of movies about serial killers, people blowing stuff up or college frat parties and search for greater meaning in films.
Also, not sure if I already mentioned this, but Secondhand Lions has got to be one of the best movies of the last decade. Great cast (You can't pass on Michael Caine and Robert Duvall on screen together, which reminds me: watch The Eagle Has Landed, one of the best WWII flicks ever, in my opinion), great writing, great storyline. Haley Joel Osment also did a great job and demonstrated he's not just "the kid from The Sixth Sense".

I wouldn't mind a watching a movie about a serial killer blowing up some people in a college frat party and then searching for the meaning of his life and what he has done.

Especially if Haley Joel Osment is the killer...him or that Mexican dude from Napoleon Dynamite.

Not sure about the last one, but going to watch Coach Carter right now, my favourite movie for sure.

I saw 10, 000 BC with my wife last friday ...avoid that movie at all costs. Your typical plot and typical cliche lines....not to mention the unrealistic bullshit. Blue eyed and straight nosed white women who look like supermodels back when sabretooth and mammoths existed? yea ok.
...I also saw semi-pro but unfortunately the only way you'll enjoy that movie is if you're either a basketball or will ferrel fan....i'm both. Its basically the typical shit you've seen from him...so enjoy.

The Other Boleyn Girl, very captivating, I said whore and faggot more than once during the movie.
Other than that I've been catching up on reading, devoured 2 books in less than a month already. On to A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

Trying to think of the last few things I've seen
Semi-Pro-Good Will Ferrell Schtick; took itself a bit too seriously at times and I would've liked some more jokes from Andre Benjamin (he was kinda the straight man). But thats a small gripe. Had me laughing, I was amused, thats all this movie was supposed to do. See it if you like Ferrell
Shooter-I had fought seeing this for awhile because I cant stand Mark Wahlberg on most occasions. But I learned if its an action movie, he's usually ok. Shit blowing up, a semblance of a story line, and completely badass main character? Hell Yeah. Fun movie and who doesnt like snipers? honestly?
Talk To Me-Interesting flick about a DC radio DJ in the 60's who was an ex con and started a morning show that challenged the FCC and spoke to the "real" DC. I liked it but after a very "keep it real" flick the ending was cheesy.

Rented The Darjeeling Limited and Into The Wild this weekend.
The first is a typical Wes Anderson movie, but very enjoyable overall.
We got a chance to see the 2nd one on a brand new 37" HDTV I just bought, it was amazing. Great movie, I ighly recommend it

Seen the same movies as you in the past two weeks.
But yeah that girl looked TOO good for this movie. Aha.
I'd say you covered what had to be said about the movies.

I saw the bank job a few days ago and it was meh. It's pretty clever at times but you'd expect most of everything that the movie throws at you.

I saw Step Up 2 a few weeks ago.
It's pretty good, and I haven't even seen the first one yet.

Saw Taken tonight. Think of it as another Jason Bourne with an older Jason Bourne who is after something that's worth quite a bit to him.
The hand to hand combat was amazing and the brutality of this guy was just amazing. Me & the rest of the theatre were rooting and whooping more than once. The dinner scene. That's all I have.
When you've watched it...remember the dinner scene. Kickass movie.

DOA.
That movie blew chunks.
The supposed "sexiness" of the movie isn't even sexy, it's more like a tease. Nobody likes a tease.
Did I mention that the movie blew chunks?

Watched There Will Be Blood thinking it was a horror movie at first. I watched for 30 minutes waiting for someone to get killed then decided to check the premise. Turns out it was about an early 1900's Oil Tycoon. I think not knowing what it was about was a good thing as it kept me from having any expectations that might skew my judgement if they weren't fulfilled. Overall, I thought it was a good movie. It even made me laugh a few times even though those parts weren't meant to be funny.

Oh, I thought you were referring to Taken.
Seriously people, see Taken!!

Being a huge Coen Bros fan, I bought "No Country For Old Men" this weekend.
Amazing stuff, fairly simply storyline but the way they turned this book into a movie is just brilliant. Great acting and atmosphere overall, especially since it takes place in my neck of the woods...
Also rented Michael Clayton last night, really enoyed it. The acting is top notch too and the story is quite captivating.

The Exorcist; another one to tick off my list of "movies everyone has probably seen by now and I should have too, but haven't yet".

Care to whip up a mini review? I'm always curious to see what people thought of the Exorcist upon seeing it for the first time. (I, for one, think it's fantastic. Not many movies scare me- that one does).
Also, was it the original, or the updated (with deleted scenes, etc) "Version You've Never Seen"? I much prefer the 'version you've never seen'.
Wed Mar 19, 2008 6:27 pm
It was the "Version You've Never Seen" so I guess my experience is different to people who watched the original when it came out or saw the original before the updated releases came out.
The way they built up to the most horrifying scenes with Regan getting sicker and the outbursts more malevolent was good, though I kind of expected a bit more horror in places where there wasn't a great deal going on. Critically speaking, that's for the best because they're actually trying to tell a story rather than just showing gory scene after gory scene.
I wasn't really that scared by it, perhaps because the various parodies have desensitised me to the most famous scenes and also the fact I didn't set everything up to be as spooky as possible. Had I been watching it alone late at night with the lights out, it might have made me jump a bit more. Perhaps I robbed myself of the experience by watching as I would any other movie.
However, the part I found genuinely creepy was the image of the demon Pazuzu appearing for a couple of frames at various points of the movie, such as when Regan is first being examined. Just that quick flash of a terrifying, ghostly face snarling at the camera is extremely haunting. When Chris is walking through the house, Pazuzu's face appearing in the shadows is also effectively chilling.
I think perhaps I was also affected by my knowledge of what basically happens in the movie and of its infamous scenes, notably through the references and parodies in other works, so in some of the slower spots where the story was unfolding - particularly the dig at the start of the movie - I had a feeling of "Come on, let's get to the parts I've heard so much about".
Ultimately, I'd agree it's a fantastic movie but I do think I might have slightly ruined it for myself, being so familiar with the material through other means. I wasn't familiar with the face of Pazuzu just appearing here and there though, so I was definitely chilled by that.
