You warmed up to Carla didn't you?
Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:22 am
I never actually disliked Carla. She was a bit haughtier early on but it made sense in context and it was shown that there was more to the character. Right now, Cole is just an arrogant sleaze and I don't find anything particularly funny, entertaining or likeable about that.

Another new episode, same complaint for me. Strongest stuff was with the original cast (though even that wasn't all that great), the stuff with the Grey's Scrubs cast was a weak re-hash of what the original cast went through without the humour and with flat characters.

damn, Andrew's hating. I liked it again, with the new and old characters. I guess I like the jokes more than the characters though.
The only thing I dont like are the overly sappy endings, those are just meh.

I blame it on turning 25. I'm becoming an unpleasable cranky old critic.
Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:35 pm
great....well, maybe scrubs will finally be done done before I turn 25

Well, if this season is any indication...

I just feel it was a mistake to carry on past last season/try a semi-spinoff. It's a rare show that can substitute a main character successfully in my opinion, at least in this genre (M*A*S*H is a good example of a show that did pull it off). To me, the new characters seem bland at best, not up to the level of the originals even as they were in the early episodes. I'll keep watching, I want to enjoy it but so far I'm underwhelmed.

I watched one episode a few days ago and that one womanizer guy who speaks in that weird slang lingo is irritating as hell for me. Some of the new characters now are just forced cookie cutter sitcom cliches judging from that one episode I watched. The one thing that I liked about Scrubs before was that every character had their quirks that sort of deviated from the typical cast of every sitcom out there.

That'd be Cole. Glad to know I'm not the only one annoyed by him, his character just seems out of place amongst the principal cast of Scrubs.

That makes at least 3 of us. It was weird, they sort of gave a head-fake towards redeeming him in the last episode, but then turned him straight back in the other direction again.
Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:38 am
Absolutely. Which kind of fits in with Scrubs' formula of their characters forgetting the lessons they've learned (which is realistic I suppose, few people change dramatically overnight) but to me the new characters just seem like they're in the wrong show.
Sun Dec 20, 2009 11:04 am
I'm guessing they have something in store for that Cole dude that will bring him down a few notches, probably not something funny but quite dramatic instead. That's how I see it at least, I don't get why they would have chosen to make him so incredibly irritating otherwise.
Sun Dec 20, 2009 12:19 pm
Yeah that's a possibility. I certainly hope they're going somewhere with it, otherwise it's going to continue to grate.
Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:12 pm
I'd say that's gonna be it as well. Hopefully it happens much sooner rather than later.
Tue Dec 22, 2009 5:16 am
Finally got around to see that last episode, and yeah, it wasn't that great. It was borderline annoying/boring at times, which rarely happens with Scrubs as far as I'm concerned. That Australian chick is hot as hell but she's absolutely useless so far.
Tue Dec 22, 2009 8:07 am
Nicky Whelan.

But yeah, character-wise she's not that interesting either. It's a weird phenomenon though, I'm very aware of her accent when it should probably sound natural to me. It's the only time I'm really aware of the Australian accent though, when an Australian appears on American TV. The same holds true when an American actor appears on Australian TV or when I've been hanging out with the guys at a Live community event.
Tue Dec 22, 2009 12:02 pm
She's had maybe a total of 5 lines of dialog in 4 episodes, so I don't know what they're planning to do with her.
Something kinky I hope.
Tue Dec 22, 2009 12:19 pm
They put her in a bikini top and hosed her down, so they've already played that card.

So, I guess that does it for JD except for one more appearance later this season. Now we'll see if the series has legs without him on a regular basis.
Cole wasn't too bad in this episode, but he still seems like he's in the wrong series. My new gripe is Denise though, I thought she had some great moments in Season 8 as a tertiary recurring character but as a member of the main cast...meh.
Thu Dec 24, 2009 6:59 am
I was pretty underwhelmed with that one again, nothing particularly worthy of Scrubs. And I don't see it get better without JD...

Same old story with the latest ep; the best stuff was with the original cast members, the rest was weak to terrible. It really doesn't look like they're going to redeem Cole at all, which means he'll remain a useless, grating character. It's not that every character in a show has to be likeable, but when you have a character who is fundamentally unlikeable in a comedy series you've got to do at least one of the following:
1. Redeem them somehow/show that they're not all bad
2. Make them incredibly clever/witty to the point where even though they're a jerk, they're just too damn entertaining to dislike
3. Have them lose. Ultimately, things don't go their way, they get shown up, their plans fall through, stuff comes back to bite them etc.
That's what made the antagonistic regular/recurring characters during the first eight seasons work. They had their redeeming qualities, even if they didn't come out very often, they had genuinely funny lines and they wouldn't always come out on top. That's where I feel they're going wrong with Cole, apart from the trick Dr Cox played on him in the latest episode he gets away with being a tool (and is right back to being one at the end of the episode, no doubt nothing will change). He's displayed no redeeming features in his character, he's yet to have a funny line and he escapes any real backlash for his dickery (for lack of a better term). Maybe the point is we're supposed to dislike him but I don't think that's a good approach for a main character, at least not in this show.
The characters new still feel really out of place. Even putting aside the very simple "They're not the original characters" kneejerk response, the style and humour of the show was based around the original characters and I don't think new, different ones are slotting in very well. Classic Simpsons had great characters, but they wouldn't work on Family Guy. Scrubs' original characters wouldn't work on a show like M*A*S*H and Frasier's characters wouldn't work on Friends. I know Bill Lawrence is urging people to treat it like a new show, but it's still trying to do the Scrubs formula with poorly fitting characters so new season, new show or spinoff, the results aren't pretty.
Hate to say it about one of my favourite shows, but I hope the declining ratings lead to its cancellation when Season 9 is through. The cast and crew may not deserve it, even the new cast who are probably doing the best they can with the material they're given, but it's just sad how quickly Season 9 is bombing when Season 8 was such a good turnaround for the show and could've left us with such a great finale.

I actually like the new season, and don't mind Cole.

In the past few years, I haven't really thought that Scrubs was even that good of a show, but it has always made me happy because of all the good memories. I never even found it that funny (the "out of luck in the soup department" line was the only one that made me laugh out loud).
Overall, I've enjoyed the eight episodes, and will probably watch them all. The only new character I really don't care for is Lucy tbh. Might be hard when Turk and Elliot leave as well.
Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:09 pm
In the eighth episode, I felt every new character (and Denise) finally reached a level of suck from which they cannot possibly return. Awful stuff, I can only hope they put it out of its misery when this short season is over.
Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:22 pm
Haha, I guess I remain in the minority then, as it was my favorite thus far.
Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:36 pm
You're probably not alone, but what they're doing with it is certainly not to my tastes. Season 9 has had its moments but as I've said in pretty much every post about the new eps, they're restricted to the original cast.
