Materazzi breaks silence
Italy defender Marco Materazzi has spoken for the first time about the verbal spat that led to his World Cup final clash with French star Zinedine Zidane.
A Zidane head-butt on the Italian defender saw the French captain dismissed near the end of extra-time of the July 9 final in Berlin.
Zidane subsequenty claimed he was verbally abused by Materazzi, although he has not divulged what his opponent had actually said.
But in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, Materazzi claimed it was a remark he made about Zidane's sister that provoked the Frenchman.
Materazzi said that Zidane offered to give him his France jersey after the final whistle in response to the shirt-tugging by the Italian, but he had replied: "I would prefer your sister."
"I did not cause it," he told Gazzetta. "I answered verbally with a provocation to defend myself.
"Yes, I was tugging his shirt, but when he said to me scornfully 'If you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' is that not a provocation? I answered that I'd prefer his sister, it's true.
"It's not a particularly nice thing to say, I recognise that. But loads of players say worse things ... I didn't even know he had a sister before all this happened," added Materazzi.
Materazzi was speaking ahead of Wednesday's eagerly anticipated Euro 2008 clash between France and Italy - a match which the defender will miss after he was handed a two-mtch suspension for his part in Zidane's dismissal.

Written by: Stephen Sharp
VALENCIA, Sep 10 (SW) - After a disappointing home draw to start the season, Real Madrid rebounded nicely with a 4-1 victory over Levante in La Liga on Sunday, Ruud van Nistelrooy notching his first three goals for the club.
Van Nistelrooy notched his first career Madrid goal in the 16th minute with a well-placed shot from inside the area, silencing the home supporters in Valencia.
It got worse for Levante 10 minutes later when Antonio Cassano opened his own Madrid account with a shot inside the post after he controlled a long ball that hit him in the face in the process.
Levante did pull a goal back in the 36th minute as Fálix Dja Ettien took a ball down nicely off his chest and beat Iker Casillas. However, it would not improve for the home side after that.
Van Nistelrooy bagged his second goal of the game on 56 minutes after David Beckham flicked a header in his direction, and he should have had a treble from the spot in the 85th minute after he was brought down by Diego Camacho, who was sent off.
His effort, though, was nicely saved by Levante goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero, although the Dutchman did eventually complete his hat-trick in the last minute after a fine set-up by Cicinho.

Capello looks to Ronaldo
MADRID, Sept 15 (SW) – Desperate for success this season Real Madrid’s coach Fabio Capello is now turning to Ronaldo to resurrect their fortunes.
The good news for Real’s fans was the announcement that Ronaldo was due to return to action for the local derby on the 1st of October when Real take on Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo has been out of action since the World Cup after which he underwent a knee operation.
His return is seen as a huge relief in the light of their 0 – 2 humiliation against Lyon on Wednesday night.
Former manager Arrigo Sachi said to reporters that he thought that the team is highly talented but are severely lacking in team spirit.
It is expected that the Brazilian will partner their new signing Ruud van Nistelrooy who has been in good form thus far this season.
Ronaldo has promised Real Madrid thirty goals this season.
