I think I remember a Cameroon International player died on the pitch a few years back (still in the 2000's though) also because of a heart attack or something.

EDIT: Heres a link to the guy: Marc-Vivien Foe

Materazzi breaks silence

Image

Italy defender Marco Materazzi has spoken for the first time about the verbal spat that led to his World Cup final clash with French star Zinedine Zidane.

A Zidane head-butt on the Italian defender saw the French captain dismissed near the end of extra-time of the July 9 final in Berlin.

Zidane subsequenty claimed he was verbally abused by Materazzi, although he has not divulged what his opponent had actually said.

But in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, Materazzi claimed it was a remark he made about Zidane's sister that provoked the Frenchman.

Materazzi said that Zidane offered to give him his France jersey after the final whistle in response to the shirt-tugging by the Italian, but he had replied: "I would prefer your sister."

"I did not cause it," he told Gazzetta. "I answered verbally with a provocation to defend myself.

"Yes, I was tugging his shirt, but when he said to me scornfully 'If you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' is that not a provocation? I answered that I'd prefer his sister, it's true.

"It's not a particularly nice thing to say, I recognise that. But loads of players say worse things ... I didn't even know he had a sister before all this happened," added Materazzi.

Materazzi was speaking ahead of Wednesday's eagerly anticipated Euro 2008 clash between France and Italy - a match which the defender will miss after he was handed a two-mtch suspension for his part in Zidane's dismissal.

So he finaly thinked of a story, that some people may belive.
I belive that Materazzi said that to him,but I also think that he said something more verbal then the thing about Zidane's sister.I don't belive Zidane would lost his cool after that, especialy because this was the man's last game.He probably verbaly attacked Zidane during the whole game and then he said that shit about his sister and BOOM!The rest is history.

Hmm, Liverpool loses 3-0 to Everton with Johnson bagging 2 goals. They better get their mess back together quick. Starting to look like they really are fakers.

1-0 up so far with the firest half winding down. Tottenham is getting a bit lively so the result is still up in the air. Giggs had the goal btw, goalie couldnt handle Ronaldo's free kick and Giggs headed in the rebound.

That's the way it ended too :D Also something to mention is Fergie got premiership manager of the month and Giggs got premiership player of the month for his first time ever, I thought he would of had won that award at least once before

That's surprising, I stayed up long enough to see Giggs' goal and decided to go to bed hoping they wouldn't win 6-5 or something lol.

They're lucky to come out with a draw. Tottenham had 3 or 4 really good chances to equalize and didnt capitalize on it. Thats the Premiership for you. Rooney's back next game so United fans can rejoice when he bags another goal. At least its a good sign that even when the team plays shit they still win.

Who knows  I saw the highlights of the game last night and it will be a good thing to get Rooney back playing after seeing the kind of chances Saha wasted. We were pretty lucky that the Tottenham strikers were on top of their game otherwise they could of scored a few goals.

Oops, my mistake. I meant they were lucky to come out with the win.

Just finished watching Real Madrid beat Levante 4-1. Ruud Van Nistelrooy had a hat-trick while playing the entire match and looking pretty sharp. Salgado got injured (knoee, nit sure how serious) and Cicinho came in and played well (setting up Ruuds 3rd goal with a brilliantly place long ball. Overall a good match, Madrid had over 60% of the possession so you get the idea. (y)

VALENCIA, Sep 10 (SW) - After a disappointing home draw to start the season, Real Madrid rebounded nicely with a 4-1 victory over Levante in La Liga on Sunday, Ruud van Nistelrooy notching his first three goals for the club.

Van Nistelrooy notched his first career Madrid goal in the 16th minute with a well-placed shot from inside the area, silencing the home supporters in Valencia.

It got worse for Levante 10 minutes later when Antonio Cassano opened his own Madrid account with a shot inside the post after he controlled a long ball that hit him in the face in the process.

Levante did pull a goal back in the 36th minute as Fálix Dja Ettien took a ball down nicely off his chest and beat Iker Casillas. However, it would not improve for the home side after that.

Van Nistelrooy bagged his second goal of the game on 56 minutes after David Beckham flicked a header in his direction, and he should have had a treble from the spot in the 85th minute after he was brought down by Diego Camacho, who was sent off.

His effort, though, was nicely saved by Levante goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero, although the Dutchman did eventually complete his hat-trick in the last minute after a fine set-up by Cicinho.

Very good match by Ruud, seems like he is fitting in the Real Madrid side nicely. (Y)

I was thinking of making one but not sure how many people really follow it. Figured we will see if anyone talks about it much in here and then make one after the group stages or something.

Yea, I watched that match. The one worry I had about Diarra and Emerson playing together was that neither really excelled on the creative side. All night Madrid dominated possession but nothing fruitful came of it. Maybe when Ronaldo returns (already in practice (y)) they will get the boost they need but as of right now they seem to be lacking that final touch.

I'm a well documented Fred lover so I was happy to see him bag a goal. The touch was splendid to cap off the wonderful run which had Madrids defenders looking confused as to what just happened. I still dont think France is the best fit for him but he sure looked good in that match. Fred for president!

I still love you Madrid! (as long as Ronaldo is there at least) :P

BTW that Barca match was highly entertainting also...along with Man Utds.

i made a note to tape the Barca, and then Man U games....missed both :x

Anyways, my betting was solid although i lost $1.

Can't wait for another Chelsea- Barca matchup, especially since Chelsea reloaded. A Man U v Real game would also be excellent

Manchester United will obviously win and I don't think Liverpool has a chance after their 3-0 loss to Everton.

Capello looks to Ronaldo

Image

MADRID, Sept 15 (SW) – Desperate for success this season Real Madrid’s coach Fabio Capello is now turning to Ronaldo to resurrect their fortunes.

The good news for Real’s fans was the announcement that Ronaldo was due to return to action for the local derby on the 1st of October when Real take on Atletico Madrid.

Ronaldo has been out of action since the World Cup after which he underwent a knee operation.

His return is seen as a huge relief in the light of their 0 – 2 humiliation against Lyon on Wednesday night.

Former manager Arrigo Sachi said to reporters that he thought that the team is highly talented but are severely lacking in team spirit.

It is expected that the Brazilian will partner their new signing Ruud van Nistelrooy who has been in good form thus far this season.

Ronaldo has promised Real Madrid thirty goals this season.

The world is such a funny place eh?

For the past few months all I have been hearing is that Ronaldo is fat, out of shape and useless. One champions league defeat later and now everyone is counting the days for him to return as their saviour. I'm not directly referencing this article but rather several football forums arount the net.

Well yeah its normal when a club is doing bad,the coach is going to the star player even if he doesn't like him.But there is a thing I don't understand Real has an awesome group of players. Why can't the coach teach them to play together?Oh well sure hope this will make a diffrence and the stars will shine.
And about the 30 goals he promised.I'm sure he can get them if the team will pass him the ball.

Today was a good day following football for me. Lyon, Man Utd, CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid won plus Ronaldo returned from his injury to play late in the game.

It will soon be time for a CL Thread dont you think?
