I think the racist jokes can go a bit far I suppose, and I can understand black people getting offended if it does happen to go too far but as far as dragging me into it because I laughed at ONE racist joke, I don't particularly give a shit if it bothers them or not.

In response to Cy's Chapelle/Ali G comment. I'll have to sign on to the first viewpoint in most cases. It's obvious when someone is joking, compared to when someone is being serious. Around the people I'm with it's usually just a big joke now. Someone (somewhere, I forget where) said they were at a movie theater and there were some kids (teens) in front of him and when a preview for King Kong came one they leaned over to the black kid amongst them and said 'I didn't know you were into acting.' And then they all laughed. It's not a good joke, but it's a good example.

They're obviously not a conversation opener. I'm not going to meet someone and say "Hi, I'm Colin. What do people have in common with jelly beans?" You have to know your audience. The people that would be offended by most of these need to lighten up most of the time, but racist jokes can't be fired off like a joke about why the chicken crossed the road. I'm not comfortable at all with saying or typing n------, one of my best friends is a black guy and we talk about hip-hop. Sometimes a song comes up that has the word in it's title and I turn into a low-talker and stutter it out. But I also tell him to aspire to the picnic table all the time.

What everyone has to understand is that what might be harmless fun for one person can be quite offensive to someone else. That's basically why we have the rules in place. We want freedom of speech and we allow a lot of latitude in these forums, moreso these days than in days gone by, but some things just aren't on.

Posting racist jokes does pretty much dance that line. It's pretty much guaranteed to offend and cause a flame, which isn't on. So please, use some good judgement and tread carefully when it comes to topics such as race, because it's a really sensitive issue and flames erupt really quickly. So yeah, probably best to steer away from that kind of humour.

A few other points...

I honestly don't think Jae was promoting, endorsing or encouraging racism against anyone at all. I hardly think he should be singled out for doing such.

The cartoon Riot posted was, in my opinion, mocking prejudice and racism more than applauding it, though that T-Shirt slogan was out of line and only served to escalate the situation. Please don't do that again, it didn't help the situation at all.

But again, it's probably best to avoid that topic, certainly posting jokes because in a forum like this one with folks from all around the world, it's going to cause problems. Let's speak freely, but let's maintain a level of civility and order about it too. Like I said, just tread carefully and use some common sense around that topic.

That's true, except in today's America the past is still with us. Black men, as well as hispanics, are still the "bottom dwellers." Actually I saw the movie Redemption about 2 years ago, found it very good and always wondered about this guy. Now that I hear his execution is next week, I feel he should be pardoned because he completely turned his life around in prison. It's very rare that you get someone that's done something that seems so bad turn into someone who is against what he's done and now preaches out against it. N-I-G-G-E-R is just a word. I have a lot of respect for those that went through slavery and had hell. It was a horrible time for this great country.
