Oh, i get it. Well, that pun was unintentional.
I told my guitarist of the name 'Hail of Contraband' last night, he liked it.
Interestingly, he liked it more than Mess Array.

Clearly, he's the best guitarist of all time.

If that's what you guys are happiest with then that's what you should go for. It's catchy, and if people like your music then they'll develop an affinity for the name anyway.
The reason "At the Hop" appealed to me is that there's actually a rather straightforward meaning to the phrase, and references an old song to boot. As I said before, it's random and unique without being too random.

Yeah, exactly. Once a band becomes famous, the name becomes irrelevant, as the name becomes synonymous with the music. But when you're starting out (like us) the band name is the first impression (well, usually) of the band, where people apply their connotations without realizing it, so it's kinda important.
I like 'At the hop' too. I didn't realize it was a saying though? That's cool. I just got it from a song title a folk artist. My only neg with at the hop is that it sounds a bit too much like 'at the drive in'. But i definitely do agree with you about at the hop.
So far me and declan (guitarist) like hail of contraband. Now i just gotta convince the other mother fuckers to want it too.

Impression, "At the Hop" gives me and likely most Americans:

The voice in my head tells me that I should start becoming your (obsessed) e-fanboy and help spread the word in promoting your band.
If only you have set on a name by now.

You should do that in a few months when we have some proper recordings up.

Well, not so much a saying as a phrase that has a straightforward meaning as opposed to being an obscure metaphor, pun or random collection of words that sound kind of cool together. However, it might a bit too much of a throwback given the song "At the Hop" was released in 1957 and the image that Ben mentioned.

You should name your band Stay Puft.
Thu Oct 09, 2008 11:55 am
Well, i've gotten input from everybody in the band about the name now.
Vyv (Singer) And Liam (bassist) don't like it too much. They think it sounds too much like we're trying to be tough, which in turn sounds like kiddy or teeny, with the word contraband in there.
Jordan (guitar) is impartial. Doesn't feel strongly for or against it.
Declan (guitar) likes it.
It's interesting how the connotations can differ depending on whether you know what contraband means or not. See, me and declan both liked the name without knowing what the words meant, whereas Vyv and Liam's connotations differ hugely. Interesting. I wonder if everybody who knows what contraband means would see it the same way Vyv and Liam did? Hmm...
I still like it though, and i'm gonna try figure out how to justify using it, to the other guys.

I can see their point about Hail of Contraband. I think it's alright but it also sounds a bit randomly thrown together, like it's trying a bit too hard to be cool and unique. Perhaps the rest of the band would be more open to something that somehow ties to the kind of music you guys play or reflects the personality or names of the people in the band? I guess those approaches might be a little corny but you could be creative with it.

It's a line from the At The Drive-In song he listed earlier. I just sent him a bunch of lines from the song (since they're all just phrases) among a couple others.

Don't try to justify it, may be the singer and bassist don't want to be confused as a tribute group to a sucky band from the past.

Riders on the Storm sounds like an awesome name for a band, only it would pass as a Doors tribute band.
Other suggestions:
- Pool of Sound
- Catholic School Girls
- Subway to Venus (yeah, I like quoting RHCP)

I think "A Pie With Sauce", in honour of those annoying AFL ads.

Guys, big news. We're going to go with the name "Lamington! At the disco" for our band.
I'd like to thank everybody for their suggestions. It was a difficult and lengthy process, but we all felt like Lamington! At the disco was the best and most representative of the music, and just made most sense so we went with that.
*shudders* But not really.
Anyway, i came here to say that Jordan (old singer, current guitarist/backup vocalist/housemate) liked 'The Mess Array'. The reason why this is startling and big news is because normally every (and i mean every) name i suggest to him he doesn't like. But the other night we got stoned and i told him i liked it, and he nodded his head enthusiastically in agreement and liked it too.
Could this be a development in band name choosing process? If the rest of the band likes it, then we might go with it.
"The Mess Array"
Probably the coolest name i've heard in a while.
