Need for Speed Underground

Postby Filip on Thu Nov 13, 2003 9:25 pm

New NFS game is out soon, this time it's about street race cars, which is really fine by me. At last you can play Fast and the Furious instead of standards sports car like Porsche you'll get a styled Supra!

Anyway it looks (as always) fabolous! (PS2 screens)

I think it's a great Idea of EA to do game with streetcars instead of sportcars since it's beginning to get a bit boring.

the sound is awesome and so is the steering, although sometimes abit unsensitive but yeh.. can't wait for this game to drop

Sounds great, the car sound is really important to me to make the feeling good. The other games didn't have to good sound (Xceot Porsche)

just played the demo, it's fairly obvious what inspired this game...
the fast and furious film franchise should just team up with NFS... they're both stealing ideas from one another anyway.
the game is great, feels great, looks great... because of the familiar F&F feel... beats all earlier editions of NFS
the NOX boosts, suped up cars... even the damn motion blur effect... stunning. drag races kick major ass.
i'm sold. i'm definately getting this thing.

I'm just worried 'bout one thing: Will it work smooth at my PC?

My system is:
Windows XP PRO
Pentium 4
2,00ghz
384mb DDR RAM
GForce 4, MX 440
80gb harddrive

BTW: Is there any cops include in the game?

I don't think you will be able to on full details.
It sucks ass on my system at around 30fps which is not that good for a fast paced racing game:
athlon xp 1800+
512mb DDR Ram
Radeon 9500pro

You really need a new graphics card! :)

it still looked very pretty on my machine, on medium details... with some adjustments to it (turned on motion blur, crowd, and such)

although i did have to play it at 800x600, it's still fine to me... and looks great, considering i have a
p4 1700
256ddr
g4 ti4200 64mb

and i dunno, 30fps should be just fine for a game like this... hell, a tv runs at 24fps, that's the smoothest of the smooth, anything under 24 should be unacceptable, 30 is alright.

a film you watch in a cinema, on tv, or whatever, runs at 24 frames per second. do you consider a film on tv "choppy"? no. 30fps is just fine if you ask me, your eye can't, whatever you may think, at all notice much difference between 30 or 60fps.

I don't know but, 24fps on a computergame is really low. Try to play CS in 24fps and see how fun that's

could've used [url] instead of [img] tags that screwed up the forum format, but oh well.

i'm sure when that game comes out there will be some freak that'll patch that woman signalling the sign, make her nude or something. ;)

Sorry but I have to call B.S. on this one.
Your eyes can and it's very easy to prove. The only reason why 24fps does not seem 'choppy' on tv is due to motion blur which makes images seem smoother than they really are. In games that are rendered there is no blurring of anything, and what you see is what you get. Easy example: set your refresh rate of the monitor to 60hz and then set it to 85hz. Notice the difference? And that's already above the 'magic' 30fps/hz mark.

http://www.viperlair.com/articles/editorials/misc/fps/
Good read if you don't know what I'm talking about. People really need to squash that "24fps is all you need because that's what movies are at" and the "30fps is all you can see" myth. Sorry but that's absolutely wrong if you know how human eyes work.

Another difference is when you WATCH something at 24fps, it's different than INTERACTING with something at 24fps. 24fps is TOLERABLE for watching something most of the time. If you're controlling something at 24fps, it's horrible and it's choppy beyond belief. 60fps is the minimum for smooth gameplay.

Anyways, regardless, NFS: Underground is just another rushed piece of shit from EA. They don't even have a replay option due to the lack of development time. What kinda racing game doesn't have replays?

kay, i may have been wrong, but i'm personally used to playing games on ~30fps, and i never minded that framerate. thanks for clearing it out anyway, seems you're into the tech stuff :)

and i do too miss the replay option... especially on the drag races that'd be quite cool to look at with their intensity and all... but still its a nice game - a good starting point for something grander.
