Mafia 2

Postby el badman on Fri May 21, 2010 10:35 am

I've never played the first Mafia game but I must say I've had my eye on the sequel ever since it was announced. This is shaping up to be one hell of a game. It has gorgeous cutscenes, the new PhysX features that avoid the usual clippings (clothing mostly), and the developers have announced their intention to make the world much more alive than GTA, with less scripted behaviors for example.

Feast your eyes on these:

I have my eyes on this since I've finished the first one. I think I read somewhere that this would be released in August.

Mods, I don't know if you wanna merge them or whatever.

Nah, a year is the cut-off. This is fine, I just felt like I had seen a thread before, and there was one. Shows how long this game has been in development.

You should look into the original. (On PC, the PS2/Xbox ports are unplayable and have parts and features missing. Including a stable frame-rate.) Looked incredible back in 2002 especially coming off GTA III and at the same time as Vice City. The facial animations and voice syncing were mind-blowing, and that initial mission running through the alleys is so well done. (And the one at the motel, so awesome.)

I liked that one too. The missions go after the other (motel-church-church rooftop-car chase in the streets all go in one story-arc in Tommy's story).

A demo will apparently be available for all platforms on August 10. It's the mission that has already been presented to the press.

If you pre-order through steam you get the first Mafia game free immediately.

Yes good sirs. Demo is out on Steam for the PC and as Pat said, when you get the demo you pre-purchase the game.

Hope that my rig can actually run this thing... :shifty:

Got the demo on Steam. This thing looks amazing  . Will post more screens later:

Seems like all clothing has physics if your videocard is an nVidia card. Will try to explore more later. You only have 10 minutes to explore the city or else the demo mission fails but some folks on the interwebz has already disabled the timer.

The demo is pretty cool, but I was sort of hoping for higher resolution textures all around. It looks good, but you can easily see why it runs much better than GTA IV for example. The characters are much better rendered, but even at 1680x1050 and AFx16, most of the textures are a little bland. Also, there seems to be some issues with PhysX at this time (which will hopefully be resolved in 2 weeks when it's out), and the mouse-to-gamepad switch is not exactly on the same level as GTA IV right now.
Other than that, good stuff. (Y)

I think a fix for that was released yesterday too. More like a PhysX profile for the game.
